Northfield Woodworking is one of the last remaining machinery manufacturers who's machines are entirely built in the US. They have been in business since 1920 and have operated out of the same facility in Northfield Minnesota since.

It was great seeing the only US woodworking machinery factory left. I am owner of a one man shop in Forest Hill, Maryland and I was lucky enough to buy a Northfield 12 HD Jointer used on Ebay from a local seller who delivered this Heavy machine to my shop. Jeff was very helpfull in telling me the history before I bought this machine and also made sure I had up to date safety stickers for it . This is a solid well made machine that will work for those who out live me!! Ray Cole- Custom Cabinetry & Fine Furniture LLC

In the late 1970's I lived in Faribault (close to Northfield) and worked in a cabinet shop. They had a big Northfield Jointer and a Northfield Table Saw. Those were very solid and accurate equipment suitable for large production runs. They were heavily used every day and, like it mentioned in the video, never needed adjustment. I even made it to the factory once to get a replacement table saw fence. I'm old but I remember them being known as Northfield Foundry back then. The table saw was old enough that the drive belt was a flat one on the original line shaft pulley.

Thanks for making this video and touring the factory. I used to operate and maintain Northfield machines in a wood shop. Northfield and Oliver were the best woodworking machine brands I have ever used. I also used to own a Northfield 16" table saw; but sadly, life events got in the way and I had to sell it 20 years ago. I still miss it to this day and your video brought back good memories.

I used a Northfield tablesaw (12" blade I think) at Faribault, MN Vo-Tech Cabinet-Making / Carpentry classes during my 1971 to 1973 studies. It was a remarkable tool! Turn it on and it hummed rather quietly, no vibration or other noises, always accurate to my settings. Excellent, excellent tools!

I've been in lust with Northfields jointers ever since I was in high school shop class in the mid-1970s. I took lots of shop classes, mostly woods related ... we had both a great shop teacher & very well equipped shop. The problem with that great video is that now the secret is out & lots more people will have their eye on the used Northfields when they come on to the market. Thanks for the nice tour & yes, that WAS Roger Ebert, in his new incarnation. :)

As a retired sawmill Saw Filer we used plumb bobs and strings to line 5,6,7 and 8 foot band wheels. A good way to double check after alignment, is to put a good band saw on, strain up the saw, rotate it forward 5-6 revs, take a measurement of the saw position, rotate backwards the same revs to see if the saw runs back or forwards. Adjust the tilt (or shim) until the saw tracks true when rotated in reverse.(Things line up differently when put under strain). On a lighter note I've poured babbit bearings and we had a name for the "Daming compound". We called it Bear Sh*t. An apt name after you roll a few "snakes" to use to dam up the bearing housing. I'm really impressed with the tooling that place has. Thanks for the tour.

Dude, thanks for this. I've been wondering if there were any manufacturers left here in the states. I wish I had the overhead to purchase an entire line of solely their machinery. The fact you can call them with a serial number and they can tell you everything about it is amazing and speaks volumes of the way things used to be. An 8" joiner that weighs half a ton? Yeah, I'll take it.

For most of my life I lived 20 miles north of Northfield Minnesota and worked for a large school district in their maintenance department. I remember that Apple Valley HS had a large wood shop outfitted with late 70's vintage Northfield machinery including a 25" planer, cabinet table saw and shaper plus various sanders and other frills. The school still uses the wood shop and actually built a second shop across the hall geared more towards home building.

Im from Covington KY ( northern Kentucky, just across the Ohio River, from Cincinnati Ohio). I remember when I was younger, the majority of the buildings in Down town Covington KY were machine shops of some sort. Also, the area of Down town Cincinnati Ohio, that is at the bottom of Price Hill, there were machine shops every where for a few miles in almost every direction. All of these shops are about gone, and or shutting down. The awesome machines that were in these shops, and the history behind them!!! I'll also say, the shop in this video, you could have putt 10 of them in just one shop that I'm talking about. None the less, the shop in this video, is somewhere, that I would love to work, if not just visit.

Matt, good video, I worked in a machine shop that had a lot of the same machine tools. They sold it all recently at auction, most of that big old working machinery was sold for scrap, broken up and cut apart with torches, very sad. Thanks for showing an American machinery builder still doing it right. Good luck and work safe, don't strain anything milling those big logs. Greg B.

Those are medium-sized radial drills. I've ran them much larger. I've ran one of those Gray open-side planers too. You don't see those Gray planers anymore, but they are used to cut bed ways on things such as lathes, etc. Now, many use the large CNC profiling mills to machine them, or use prefabricated round ways, etc. I am glad that the company still makes machinery the old way, and that they're still in business.

wonderful tour - only one machine would either go thru my floor or be the only thing I would have room to use. Screw the arms race, Trump. Build Northfield Machinery a new road and a private rail spur. Install a fibre-optic trunk line and build a community college next door to train the next generation of machinists.

We had a Short Stop Brake on our table saw at work, can't remember the size of the blade, thinking 15-20 inches. But we set the gain on the brake to stop the blade in about 12-15 seconds. On a 3 phase motor, reversing the phase creates heat in the windings, and when it gets hot, sometimes the timer will drop out before the blade is completely stopped, and then will continue to coast at a slow speed. But that was with a lot of starting and stopping.

Ron Briz That's cool Ron. I had never seen a brake like that in person. It's pretty impressive.
