Northwest Coast Formline Design is the traditional artwork of the people of Southeast Alaska and the Northwest Coast. This video is meant to showcase northern styles, particularly of the Haida and Tlingit people. This style of artwork has followed a set of evolving design rules over countless generations, and should be well understood by everyone who spends time on the coast.
This video shows the creation of an ovoid, and the many design options that can build off of this primary shape. It is meant to highlight basic design steps and methods, but the choices an artist makes in composition help determine individual and cultural styles.

This is so useful. We were given an 'art challenge' in the 'Lachri Group for Artists' for the month of March. The challenge was to draw or paint a composition that contained 'something that flies', 'something that swims',' and the sun, moon, or stars. I recalled viewing the 'Northwest costal Indian art when I lived in Washington State. I found this and other videos when I was gathering some ideas of what to do. This video displays the basic shape concepts. Thanks for posting.

I’ve. Being carving since I was 6 years old and this is the long way to make a ovoid, the proper way is to take a paper and fold in half then draw on one side then cut out with scissors then un fold then draw center line with pencil then draw smaller ovoid then you have your paper ovoid template then draw ovoid on paper where you wanna draw your design and fill out rest of your design

Wow, love it! Thank you for yours videos- lets a lot of people further their art education by expanding on native art forms, which you don't traditionally get to see.

Is it okay and respectful of me, a non-indegenous white female, to try formline art? I am fascinated by it but do not want to cross any boundaries.

I feel that promoting this artwork deliberately is an act of respect. I am not First Nation either, but elevating their art seems complimentary. I am also reading stories from their tribes to learn about their people's. Tlingit, Haida, Tsimshian. Worthy art speaks well of a people.

This is a great introduction to the art form. I love the background music, too. Where could I find it? Is it online, in iTunes, from Sealaska, etc.? -Kyle Wark

I thought in northwest coast there was not straight lines, but in your ovoid the sides are straight and come up and curve or am i wrong and we cannot see the curve in the video because it's so mild?

Haida art is a art formed upon countless generations and defended by countless generations, same story for all natives, their style created by countless generations, each time used, it is a form of honor to the ancestors creation. In the past, you had to be born into the right to use certain crests, and any crest figure a person wants you to produce and not in your clan rights to use it, one approached a member of a clan and asked permission to use it for this one time. If given the right to carve it, one paid that person for that permission. Wars were fought over someone making use of a crest figure without proper permission and refused to make payments, and many died. In this modern times, if you are non-native, what right do you have to cross this ancient rule and for what, just because you like the art? Disrespect of the highest order! There are stories we grew up with that told of the punishment handed out to any one who violates this ancient rule, "You had to be born into the right to use that crest figure!"

Thank you so much for sharing this Lance! I'm just learning about Lingít style formline drawing and this video was very helpful in understanding how to make my designs symmetrical! (Much easier with the tracing paper I'm seeing!) What is the material you are placing on top of the tracing paper throughout the video? It looks much thicker than a sheet of tracing paper, some sort of plastic I'm guessing.
