I wonder why some countries use the yellow lines (Canada, USA, Norway apparently) and some the white (most EU countries)? Personally, I find the yellow more appealing.
One of your very best videos IMO, in terms of overall scenery, subject matter, annotations and music. Looks so incredibly serene and peaceful out there. Great work; putting this on my favorites list.
Newfoundland and Labrador have Canada's best accessible fjords, especially along Newfoundland's western and northwestern coasts. There are some in eastern and northern Quebec, too. There are a lot in the arctic far north, but you can only get to them by boat or helicopter. The ones in BC have denser temperate forest, but NL and Norway have boreal. The climate and fellfield and coastal landscapes are also very similar. You should come some day!
Nice video. This was obviously taken on a very calm weather day. It look peaceful, certainly not "one of the most dangerous roads in the World" without excessive angles.
Yes, many roads have near-continuous guard rails in Europe. Italian roads in particular are often nearly entirely equipped with guardrails. It's cheaper than widening the embankments.
The reason US roads use guardrails much less is safety standards: guardrails will deflect a vehicle back onto the highway, which can cause a much more dangerous situation, especially on roads with a lot of traffic. Guardrails are only used where the danger to a vehicle that moves off the road is greater than the risk that vehicle is to other vehicles on the road when it bounces off the guardrail. A few years ago, someone died when their car drove off a busy causeway across Tampa Bay into the water. I saw a news report where the family was mad there was no guardrail. The tv news station interviewed the state department of transportation, which said that because the road has a lot of high-speed traffic (speed limit is 65mph or ~105km/h) and there is not a big drop into the water (maybe 2m/6ft and gradually sloping over about 5-10m/15-35ft from the edge of the road to the bay) that it would be more dangerous to have a guardrail because a car would bounce off and onto the road where it could cause a multi-vehicle accident.
Here's what Florida's manual on road design says... Pg. 104: " *If space and economic constraints are severe, it is permissible, but not desirable, to use guardrails in lieu of the requirements for width and slope of clear zone.* Where the previously described requirements for clear zone are not met, guardrails (or other longitudinal barriers) should be considered. Guardrails should also be considered for protection of pedestrian pathways or protection from immovable roadside hazards. *The general policy to be followed is that guardrails should be used if impact with the guardrail is less likely or considered less severe than impact with roadside objects* " Pg. 171: "Protective devices for roadside design may be considered as highway appurtenances intended to reduce the severity of off-the-road crashes. In those situations where the minimum safety standards for median and roadside are not feasible, protective devices should be considered. *Guardrail and crash cushions should not be used indiscriminately, for at least two reasons: they are expensive to install and maintain, and they are closer to the road than the objects they are shielding.* They are involved in more crashes than unshielded objects. *They should be used only when they are warranted by the reduction in crash severity.* ... _E.1.a Function_ *The primary function of a longitudinal barrier is to redirect an errant vehicle away from hazardous roadside situations.* The barrier should be designed to produce a minimum of deceleration (lateral and longitudinal) to a vehicle. _E.1.b Warranting Conditions_ *Warranting conditions for the use of longitudinal barriers are essentially those conditions in which the overall probability of injuries and fatalities would be reduced by the use of these redirection devices.* "
This is scary 😨😲😨 where are the houses. Are there are even people in Norway? I only see the road. I hope everyone's car is okay because I see no gas stations and going across water.
