Gonna come at you old school from this ‘80’s kid & talk about the era before “the block era” took off. We had more of a “Power Hour (two or more similar shows by the same production company sold as a package together)” type block until “The Disney Afternoon” completely changed the game for “After School Cartoon Blocks”. Once that happened it was game on and you got the explosion into your era…

Oh, these take me back. Where to start, well, my first blocks were early Fox Kids and later The Disney afternoon, ironically enough, both debuting in 1990 the year of my birth, those were main stays until more options were expanded later on. Heck in my local NY CW (former The WB) affiliate, WPIX 11 had a block of after school toons starting at 3 during the 80s and had a promo in the most 80s way possible, a shame all of that went away in the start of 06 where the network thought that kids moved on to cable.....I was one of the unlucky ones who didn't have cable. But even though I didn't have cable, I still got to enjoy cable related content as I can growing up. Just like you I grew up knowing few of those blocks and some that existed beforehand especially the Saturday morning stuff, and even though blocks began to wind down in the next decade in utter obscurity with attempts to revitalize the idea of a block (Vortexx CW, ADHD and AS Toonami though that remains) I'll never forget how they shaped me creatively.

While I certainly knew that other people remembered stuff like this, I've always felt like I was the only one who cared. But now I see nostalgic videos like this, and read the comments, and realize that I'm not alone. There are others who remembered and care. Not to get too deep in a RU-vid comment section, but lately I've been feeling like I should let go of entertainment. Maybe go outside more often. Maybe pick up an outdoor hobby. But then other times I see videos like this and think that maybe it's not so bad to hold on to a little bit of my past. I don't know. I'm in a weird place in life right now. Sorry for getting too deep. Thank you for the video. I will definitely stay tuned for videos about the awesome blocks we used to have. Especially Toonami.

Cool video as always. Also if you do make another video like this how about TV Block from other non-children channel. Channels like G4, Discovery or even better the SyFy Channel which were legends for both their blocks and bumpers. I think my favorite block from that channel was their anime block and the evolution of it too. I believe during the earliest-ish era of that block they even had Ralph Bakshi to host it for a airing of either project A-KO or I think Akira.

Ah man, those boomerang buffers gave me some serious flashbacks. Im about 12 years old sitting on my couch at 3am waiting for my parents to arrive home. I had a bit of seperation anxiety and they had a night shift job. Im sitting there waiting for the next episode of dragon ball z to come on, watching all the cool buffers and ads along the way. You know, as a kid you take it for granted. Because you don't really understand how bad things can get, or even are. I haven't been happy in years, and the last time i remember being happy, was when these shows still aired. It was one heck of a time. And i miss it.

Growing up in Canada, we didn't have a lot of the same blocks in spite of having a lot of the same shows (not all) as the US because the channels were not owned by the Cartoon Network, Disney, Nickelodeon, etc. until 2011, but more so 2014-2016ish. So if I were to tell people "Hey I loved the Zone on YTV", a lot of people would be really confused unless you're Canadian. If I told you they used to air Spongbob, Fairly Oddparents, and Danny Phantom you'd be like "nice!"

An art that has gradually gone away as TV channels have gotten lazier with their bumpers, blocks being phased out, and with the rise of streaming. At least the bumpers can still be enjoyed online.

They weren't really airing Digimon (my favorite Jetix show besides Ying Yang Yo) as much despite this 2. I preferred comedy shows over action as a kid, and really missed the Disney cartoons 3. Jetix started 2 months before Miguzi and outlived Miguzi by 2 years. I think Saturday Video Entertainment System was better than all in spite only lasting for one year, even better than Toonami. @@Launchpad05 I agree, but I still think Jetix was superior to Miguzi for reasons I brought up before... and I didn't even include the Kids WB and Fox Kids reruns Jetix had. I only mentioned the exclusives. Miguzi is dead last because outside of Code Lyoko it was just an action block for shows that could already be seen elsewhere. I think based on cultural impact.. Toonami was the best of all.. since it put anime on the map on the western side of the world, heck, Toonami made a comeback and still exists today even if it's not what it was before... but when it comes to the variety and the selection of shows to choose from... SVES blows all out of the water... SVES was the longest hours plus it gave you the most variety, it mixed up Japanese anime, American action, and DC comic book shows all into one. Sadly... SVES only lasted one year.

i didn't know the phrase for this kind of branding stuff before i saw this vid, but omg! i've been missing it for years lol. glad somebody else agrees. major nostalgia. i think the core of what these blocks bring that modern, efficient streaming lacks is...spectacle! i've never seen my feelings on such a niche little piece of media nostalgia encapsulated so well by another lol.

I remember switching between all the Saturdays morning blocks! The 2000s TMNT, the Canadian Yamroll and Mr Meaty. Then the ABC Disney block with the Weekenders and Recess!!! Then the cartoon network block on Saturday night with Teen Titans and Justice League!

That’s my problem with the current streaming era, the lack of identity. All of these networks put the effort in to find ways to make their branding unique for us viewers to resonate with. Whether it be underwater aliens on Miguzi, the designs of the TEENick & The N bumpers that made it feel more mature. The rush to make it to the tv and plan out when to watch when channel, the blocks’ identified with us and we and future viewers will no longer get that experience.

Awesome video! The brief bit on defining what makes TV blocks good was nice to have for reference before diving into some of them, and the ones you picked out were cool! Blocks like Miguzi feeling like they're their own shows seems like quite the treat, and The N really did have a fun early 2000s aesthetic~ Speaking of aesthetics, I like yours that you've been using in your videos as of late! :D Your logo especially looks cool, as well as the end of intro shot at 2:26!

I remember when they had Fried Dynamite when I was little. It's lame looking back. I also liked Toonami when I was little. That's where I got to watch Naruto.

So, not sure if this count but whatever also sorry for grammar mistakes since english is not my first language and this might be a BIIIT long to read so get ready: There was this block in Disney Channel called Zapping Zone that used to air in the evenings, usually when my sister and i came back from school and usually made me skip the channel because i onlly watch Disney Channel for the cartoons and movies but my sister love watching, it was a 2 hours block that air Disney Channel Sitcoms from the time like Suit Life, Hannah Montana, Cory In the House, Wizards of Waverly Place and maybe if i was lucky Phineas and Ferb and during the commercial breaks they used to do like skits or even game shows, now you may be asking "how i never heard of that before?", easy, it inly used to air in Latin America and something i notice the hosts had a different accent than mine (my sister and i are from mexico) and turns out they we're from Argentina, so yeah, that's the story of this block thst i never liked as a kid but i got a little nostalgic thinking about it
