My thoughts on the full spool shipping thing. With full spools I tend to have problems when the printhead moves up (cartisian) the loss in tension pushes the filament off the side of the spool and it can tangle around the spoolholder causing print failures. Minor gripe that can be fixed with a simple printed part, but still something to consider.

Would you consider adding a simple conversion to your store page showing the cost per kilogram next to the actual spool cost just to make thing even easier for people to understand?
@stillpointx2623

It's better to know the weight of how much filament is on each spool. So we can compare apples to apples. Also I can see the filament coming off the spool when changing them out with different material (which cause tangles / knots in the filament) This happens a lot with protopasta they make the crappy cardboard spools to small and the filament goes right up to the edge and when you change them out or un-mount the filament it falls off the spool when backing out and gets tangled up. Maybe you should call these spools "Tangled spools". We know you use custom machines so this may not happen with yours but try it with a prusa or ender.

I agree with this. In addition, as a hobby user, the 1kg is about the maximum amount of filament I'm able to use before it gets bad because it's absorbing too much moisture. I know I should get a dryer and store it properly and yadayadayada, but realistically I'm not putting that much effort into it. Getting a rotation of the filament and opening new boxes on a regular basis handles most of this.

Filling spools up close to the edge increases the chances of tangles when the spool unwinds on the spool holder and "hops" over the edge/rim of the spool. The likelihood depends on the setup, but it does happen.

This is also my concern. I have seen hundreds of spools of material go through our printer at work and literally the only time I have seen the filament hop the spool on that machine was from a spool that came overloaded with 1.2 kg of filament. This is not science just one singular experience. I totally support the cost savings but overloading a spool feel risky.

As a Printables user, I am thankful that Prusa is taking steps to prevent my 3d models from being "harvested" and posted to other websites where I am not a member, and of which I may or may not approve. Printables and Prusa aren't perfect, but by their actions here, I don't have to worry as much about trying to police that myself. What I see with Bambu, is a lineup of very nice, often innovative machines, produced by a company with the typical Chinese attitude towards playing fast and loose with intellectual property. Ignoring others' property rights, or insisting on protecting their own interchangeably as it suits their purpose. I've been considering giving my brother and his family a Prusa Mini as a Christmas gift this year. When the new Bambu dropped, I briefly wondered if that was still the best option, but digging into the details, the Prusa is the more capable machine for a user who is focused on making functional parts (for cosmetic, multi-color parts, maybe a different story). The Bambu bed is said to be capable of hitting 80C, which is barely enough for PETG, and forget about ABS/ASA, Nylon, PC etc. The Prusa Mini can handle all those materials, with input shaping in development. The additional cost is justified because it can do more, IMO.

GST tried to fit 1.5kg on a standard roll before they imploded. These rolls were terrible and they tended to have the filament go over the lip and tangle on the printer spool holder.

Convenient idea. Please test on the BL AMS before releasing as overfilled spools do bind against the enclosure. Warped ones as well. It makes for a good mess and tangling inside.

I always compare cost (including shipping) per gram of filament that I know is high quality. This sometimes leads me to change supplier depending on the volume I'm ordering. Having said that... The extra bit of spool above the winding actually makes it easier for me to load as the loops don't slip off the side and most of my printers have vertically mounted spools feeding them (dehydrator set up).

Caveat; I have no skin in the Prusa/Bambu game, but if I were bambu and I was running a bot farm, my strategy for maximum exposure would incorporate a mix of positive and negative comments. The negatives would center around mostly benign, but very obviously false opinions/information, thereby encouraging more engagement (bc we all know internet warriors love to point out how wrong other people are). I'm not saying that Pruas is too good to employ such "Botastic" tactics, but it seems very fishy that they would have posted a comment that would so obviously cause a huge stir of reply's in support and defense of bambulabs. I have a feeling someone back at b'labs is feeling pretty good about themselves for having simultaneously gained so much exposure and at the same time discredited the reputation of their competition.

OK, one comment/thought on the spools. You have added weight to the spool which increases the "drag" or friction on 90% of solid tube type spool holders, it also adds to the potential vibrations going on given the increased weight. Granted this only happens until you get down to the original 1kg level but have you thought about the impact of that, if any ??

I'd love to have more filament on a spool, whether it is on a standard size spool or if it is loaded on larger 2, 2.5, or 3kg spools. I print larger stuff and if I can get more larger prints done without needing to swap filament at the end of a print, it's definitely better for me. I'm not locked down to using any built in filament spool holders, so I have more freedom to use a larger spool, although I think 5kg would be the limit, or perhaps beyond the limit because then my extruder is putting extra effort into pulling the filament off the spool which for my lower end printers with stock extruders could be a problem.

One other thing to think about is as you get the filament closer to the edge how many people will let it skip over the lip and all of a sudden have problems that they try and blame on the manufacturer (for the love of god will you explain exactly how your machine could ever EVER get stuff tangled - as far as I know it is NOT possible unless there is a user error at the end). Regarding spooling more volume. While it's a nice to optimized amount of volume of filament on a spool, longer term it may make more sense to ask what is the optimum spool size for production, and other logistics (like shipping quantization). Will Slant 3D produce, or be sourcing spools for the Tangled Filament line? I'm aware Slant has experimented in past with a few spool designs, including a reusable design. While a slightly larger diameter could enable more volume, experimenting with spool width might be another dimension to consider. Think it's great in experimenting with shipped volume on the current available spools as shipping the initial Tangled Filament batches. This will allow customers to provide feedback on what, if any issues occur with more filament on a spool, and provide valuable feedback at what level the issues no longer exist. Shipping more filament for essentially similar cost is a bonus that can be passed along the value chain. Knowing the empty weight of a spool would be a useful spec. Typically need to weigh an empty a spool to get spool weight as a spec to gauge how much filament (by weight) is left on similar spools. While runout detection exists, having idea when a spool swap might be needed is helpful. I have not seen filament weight vs. total shipping weight of spools analyzed. Spools typically weigh ~160-290g to hold 1kg of filament. Just a reference to the amount of variation across spools, across the industry. Increasing the ratio of filament to shipping weight offers many positives.

Well Im super new in the field and I bought the prusa mk4 as a first printer, but when you say "bambu makes a product every 6 months, and prusa every 3 or 4 years", I prefer to buy something that I can improve and mod, than to get the lastest iphone of the market. But still I agree that if Prusa had the monopoly, it's good to lose some market. Every mk3s owner seems to say "well I don't care of the mk4, my mk3s works since years", to me it sounds like a good advertising... So I guess the real difference is price, money.

I like the consideration of putting more filament onto the spool, but that did bring up a thought to my mind: I always assumed spools were designed for the filament, in this case standard weights like 1kg, 3kg, and so on, and not vice versa. One caveat I see with filling the spool entirely to the "standard" brim, especially when downsizing on protective packing material, is that the filament would be more vulnerable to breaking if hit from the side/dropped/etc. Not that you can't melt filament ends back together, but that isn't ideal at all. What are your considerations on this?

ABS filament, which is less dense, fills the standard spools nearly completely and it can be annoying when it jumps over the edges when full. Effectively what you would be doing is changing to ship by volume instead of weight. Conceptually probably a good idea. Just be as clear as possible with your labeling and it should be fine. Maybe include on the label: empty spool weight, total filament weight, total filament length, volume of plastic and on the site $/kg. lotsa of extra info can help resolve any confusion or dissatisfaction.

It's always weird to me that filament is sold by weight. When it's volume (length of a fixed diameter) that matters to the printer -- it converts everything into some length of filament that the extruder pushes through the nozzle. The density of the material shouldn't change the length you get on a spool, but it can very well change the price per unit length, obviously.
@NOTNOTJON
@NOTNOTJON 11 месяцев назад
I'm no material expert, but unless the density of filament changes by more than 5% per filament type, it makes so little difference that measuring by kg is just yhe best option. 1kg = x meters on your roll and that will be about the same ratio for every roll. If this channel hasn't mentioned it, I'm guessing that the rest of the world isn't noticing either.

Btw, from what I understand about the Printables/Makerworld thing, Prusa supposedly did the same "link in account description" to let people import from Thingiverse when Printables was released, so blocking Bambu from doing the same to them is a little scummy since it adds extra hurdles to designers who DO want to move platforms, or just want to be on both.

15:30 You say that as if us Americans didn't choose the McDonald's Quarter Pounder over the BK Third Pounder just because 4 is bigger than 3 😂 Jokes aside, I am excited to see how well the 1½ rolls go. I love the idea of less roll changes, but there are some designs out there that depend on the long tongues of the under-filled rolls, so I'm also interested in seeing how those designs are modified (if they are) to suit your new rolls.

One thing for sure - any design you print via bambu's cloud is in the hands of your competitors in China.

My local filament guy, Siddament, uses these narrower smaller cardboard spools that fit 1kg of filament but the boxes and spools themselves take up way less room. And those spools work totally fine in a AMS. Have always wondered why more manufacturers don’t also use these spools.
@johnlombardo
@johnlombardo 11 месяцев назад
Are you putting the cardboard spools straight into the AMS? I didn’t think that was recommended. I made a bunch of reusable PETG rings that clip onto the sides of the Siddament cardboard spools and that works great!
@wernc.
@wernc. 11 месяцев назад
@@johnlombardoyup! Straight into the AMS. Siddament cardboard spools have sealed edges so they don’t fray or come apart etc etc. Sidd who brings the spools in uses his spools in his Bambu machines and AMSes as well.

Re: the import of models... Printables does the same thing with thingiverse. Prusa shows the double standard and jerk status by taking any steps to prevent the export of models.

That definitely doesn't look good on Prusa, especially Prusa is the one who always mention 'open' as the advantage over Bambulab.
@LilApe

Except prusa never blocked the importation of models from printables to makerworld. They just blocked the URL due to BL bot spamming their users. Prusa said in his official tweet that you can still use the verification codes to import models. Lets not spread misinformation. Also, everything prusa accused BL of doing, BL confirmed in their official blog post. Just validated the reasoning for prusa blocking the makerworld URL.

Would 1kg of 2.85mm Dia. fill the standard spool size better and is that why we are stuck with them?

Ok but I always thought we should measure by length so it's clear how much different materials are and how much fillers cost

The A1 looks nice and the multi-material is amazing, we should all just admit it. What I am happy to see is that none of the reviewers or Bambu are trying to sell this as a printer-for-all or a print-farm printer or whatever. They all clearly state this is a plug-and-play AMS printer for someone who doesn't want the AnkerMake, which still hasn't produced their multi-material system. It is also years ahead of the Prusa MMU, and in a few years we might be able to compare it to the Prusa-XL, hopefully.
