Its actually highly refreshing to have your authentic experience of being a fine artist. Too many RU-vid artists make it sound simple to sell $1000s worth of art yearly. Thanks for your humble honesty.

I literally had my first ever solo exhibition yesterday as I am writting. It was in a coffee shop. Many friends and acquaintances couldn't come. I sold no artwork. Yet I was super well accompanied and I could talk at length about my art with the people I love the most. I had time also to get to catch up with people I love. So it was a blast!

Your fan-base is mostly online, try selling originals online and include shipping + insurance. The people willing to spend thousands want it to be an investment that at least keeps its value if not go up, I am not saying they don't appreciate the art of it as well. Keep your legacy going and I don't think you'll have an issue with the value of your work going up over time

What a refreshingly optimistic outlook from a young man who's invested ten years of his life for zero tangible reward aside from happy times spent with his friends and "awareness ". The art market is and always has been a racket, without the right agents and representation its just an indulgent hobby for the externally funded. I wish you well in these times and hope you direct your undoubted energy and talent wisely.

On Tuesday I had someone circle back around from a solo show in 2022 to check the availability of a piece. They bought it - then explained to me it was their favorite painting of mine and have been thinking of it almost everyday since they saw it in person. This is not the first time it has happened. The things we do as artists have profound effects on people we cannot always see, and that's a lot of times the best part. It's always worth it if you are doing what you truly love. Congratulations on the show, and the book!

Is 'Success' defind by sales or the experience that is recorded and shared? If it is the latter then this whole experience in watching your channel in the lead up and the actual realities of the show gives a perspective that You suceeded far beyond the expectations of sales and that has to be considered 'REVOLUTIONARY' in a 'public spotlight' way! I get that a number of artists known and unknown would of had the same experiences with their Art shows however your experiences gives hope to simply just be in belief of one's own creativity. Plus, 'Studio Slew' is onto something big, it is going to revolutionize the way art is perceive in a more accessible way. Especially, for many who have not had opportunities like understanding the artist within themselves . What an Honour to witness an incredible Artist at work.

Next time someone asks me why artists "charge so much" for their art, I'm just going to show them this video... so much time, work, planning, money spent on merch, marketing, stickers, signs, framing, packaging, transportation, etc for a solo show, and you didn't sell anything... The cost of a painting is more than the sum of it's literal parts, it's everything else that lead up to the existence of that artwork, including the years of study and practicing the craft. Anyway.... going to continue watching now. LOL.

I had a 2 man show up for 1.5 months. None of our paintings sold, I didnt expect them to, and I have a full time job to support my art and plenty of space for making and storing work, but its nice to know what you make is wanted by the general art buying public. I sold some older prints that basically paid for my hotel stay for the night of the reception. I just put that show in the art storage....had that depressing thought, am I just painting for art storage? Was this all worth it? I think in the end, YES. I put on a killer show, there was a great turn out, and I got to speak about my art to new people. I also learned some things, maybe I was pricing too high for my area, maybe I should have just pulled the trigger on new prints, and maybe the show was not scheduled in the best time, but that was out of my control. Just got to keep making work and applying this body of work into new places.

I think many artist's lack the entrepreneurial spirit, and are not great risk takers, as you seem to be. Many of them with more cohesive and refined works hold themselves back, but here you are with work that's not even academic or conceptual in strength, and you're giving it a go. Positivity can surround you with "yes men" and perhaps you need someone to mentor you on your body of work, that can pull you back from both the business side and painting side, and help you become a painter.

If the proceeds from the merch sold are going to the company selling the merch (regular business functioning), isn't it disingenuous to say the profits are being donated? I don’t think so the schools a separate entity from him. He’s an independent artist on top of building a school where other artists can go to learn. I have a hard time seeing how this would be disingenuous when his whole motive of starting a school is to give back to his community and fellow artists who desire to learn. He believes himself capable of providing this service FOR others which is why I don’t see there being a problem with it being titled as a donation. We need artists like him out there. Would we have thought twice if it was a larger institution asking for donations?

If your organization is a 5013 C non-profit charity then everything that you make is part of the nonprofit charity. If you do not have a 5013 C then you are a private business it is that simple . I work for a global nonprofit so I know of what I speak
@obamafan1
@obamafan1 9 часов назад
@@dgrizzley I think that his studio is a non-profit organisation though, not a charity. It's hard to know the specifics of this particular situation, but whether or not he is technically donating profits from merchandise is somewhat irrelevant when the money either way winds up as revenue for an organisation he presumably has sole control over. The money could be used for anything, including paying himself a salary. I'm not saying I doubt his intentions, but it seems strange to phrase it as if he will be donating the profit when he is essentially giving the money to himself.

People love realism. People buy realism. We need to stop thinking that modern art or abstract art sells. No, it doesn't sell. Another important factor is the price. If no one knows you (RU-vid is an educational platform, not a marketplace), it’s unlikely that someone will buy your painting for a high price. If you want $1,000, you could price two paintings at $500 each or offer a discount on both. That's how business works. Many artists exaggerate their own worth and believe they should be valued at $10,000 or more. You need to be very good at realism. Your themes should be original, rather than creating banal works or things that only you understand. There’s no formula for success, but when you’re starting out, you should begin with low prices and gradually increase them as you gain recognition among a wider audience. Just because you have projects, or your paintings have been in London and back; just because you created them during a period of depression or joy, does not add value to the painting or raise the price. To succeed, you need to know exactly where you stand in the art world (amateur, student, professional) and start building your business from there. Messy or scribbled works don’t sell. Maybe for $100. Buyers want you to be really, really good at what you do. And if you’re an amateur or a doodler, having connections won't help.

Well from what I could see, it had to have been a successful showing. Personally, as I looked at some of your pieces, the prices were fair. It really comes down to the clientele, and that is where marketing comes into play. I loved your layout, and it seemed as if each piece got its place of honor. I too had a showing on the same day, which was one of three days. I normally do quite well at this particular show, but this year not so much. BUT, it was not all about the sales at that moment. It was getting more of my art style noticed, as well as hoping to pull in new commissions. I totally agree with you about “no rules” in what we as artists do. Oh there are people who try to implement rules for their sanity I suppose, but there are those out in the so called art world, that truly don’t know how artists think, and what motivates them. I think only artists can judge art knowledgeably, and have the inside scoop as to what makes an artist do what we do, and how we do it. It doesn’t matter if we want to paint fine art one day, and build legos the next. If that is what inspires us, then that is our process, and our right to do so. I do hope now you have time to wind down from this, and can get a moment to regroup for your next project. Btw, check your I G messages, I left a question under my art name, and am curious to the answer. 😊 take care!❤❤

Not selling will help push you to improve your work, which, for your prices in this market, are too high for most collectors of an unknown. Just a bit of advice, coming from long established artists I have talked to over the years about marketing and how to sell, for what its worth - Don't let your ego stand in the way, take advice from experienced artists and push yourself more. Always do the type of images you want to paint, just be aware that what you want to paint is not necessarily what people want to buy. Go to drawing sessions a few times a week, at least. (you need it, we all do). Stop painting yourself and ask friends to pose, costume or not. As an illustrator, I had dozens of great pro models pose for me for book cover reference, etc, and was always surprised that they were happy to take the last half hour for my fine art shots in costumes for future reference. Collectors won't look at your work as 'serious' if you keep painting yourself in simple settings, or swords or cartoony faces, etc. Your color is good and I bet, for your age, you can really improve if you do more serious work and push yourself, spend more time on a good piece, not try to knock out more mediocre work. And don't listen to youtube comments saying how good you are. Find some quality artists working today, contact them, get some advice and don't let your mind get wrapped up as to not selling, but move toward just doing better work. Hope you take these comments as intended.

Congratulations! Hoodies are not my thing but those are VERY sharp! The show looks great. Why did you set your prices so high? Did you kind of not really want to let go of your work?

Impressive feat of organisation, and no doubt a learning experience which will stand you in good stead for future shows. Do you plan to focus on the more classical/fantasy painting in the future, or to continue with the more graphic/graffiti art as well? One always hears advice that it is better to stick to a consistent, recognisable style and subject matter, for which one can become known, not that I ever followed this myself. Which style of art got you more interest and positive feedback? I prefer your more traditional looking pictures, personally, but the stylised graffiti ones are admittedly more distinctive.

I really admire the hard work and incredible effort you put into everything you do. Success is of course gauged in many ways and if not financially (yet) you are more than successful in so many other ways right now. Your energy and drive are truly inspiring.

I'm so curious about how the renting of space works. You're adding stickers and nails to walls, so is the wall reset part of the deal? It all looks awesome though. I can only really imagine the amount of work that has gone in (what we see and far beyond).

Love this, SLEW! Can you share the names or links to the other artist helpers/friends that were there? I love following artists on RU-vid.

I had a museum show for six months with a few inquirers but no work sold. Was it worth it? Hell yes.
