Like he said in MMA everything goes back to basics, it just so happens that one of the day 1 sweeps from single leg X is to push the hip forward and knee out to make the guy fall backwards, you can't punch forward if you're falling backwards.

I was talking with a buddy who's a purple belt, and he made a good point about Jiu Jitsu in MMA, and that a fair amount of stuff works really well, including leg locks, people that do them typically have high percantage rates with them. But for some reason, they got knocked out once after tapping out like 5 people with a leg lock, and all of a sudden it's a bad move that never works

Guillotine and the head and arm chokes are common. The D’arce has become more common lately because it’s a good move to go to from a sprawl when the opponent shoots.

You could just go train BJJ. Then you’d realize (after a couple years) that BJJ isn’t a style of techniques. It’s a style of concepts. Take the fight to the ground, pass the legs, progress through a hierarchy of positions, end the fight with minimal damage to either person. These are the macro-concepts. They break down to micro-concepts, such as chokes being more direct than joint locks, and positions being ranked based on how easy it is to throw strikes. Those micro-concepts breakdown into techniques. The macro-concepts of BJJ are absolutely 100% applicable to self-defense, MMA, sports, hobbyists, etc. once you get down to micro-concepts and individual techniques, then you can recognize which ones translate to specific situations.

If you watch Charles Oliveira vs Kevin Lee, it's a masterclass on using BJJ leg entanglements from the ground to off balance and attack the opponent while keeping distance so you don't take damage. Charles did a great job using the reap or threatening a sweep in 50/50 to keep Kevin's hips from facing him. Kevin barely attempted any ground and pound during the grappling exchanges where he was standing over Charles.

I feel like leg locks are actually becoming more common in mma as the popularity of leg locks in sport bjj starts to carry over. K guard, which recently has been poped up, is a system that allows to attack an opponents legs while being save from strikes. As for SLX I agree that it isn't great as a static position when your opponent has a great base. However good leg lockers will be dynamic in their position. In your example a switch to x guard would easily off balance you and allow for sweeps, back takes or leg locks. In order to be dynamic in these positions one must have a lot of experience in them.

Never really been interested in leg locks other than defending them. In jiu jitsu they are effective since once you master them they have to be one of the easiest subs to get. Personally I'll only go for them when I'm tired since they don't take alot of effort. When you can dominate above the waist and conrol and take subs that takes time and effort to master and I believe is highly effective in a actual fight.
@perfectsplit5515
@perfectsplit5515 3 месяца назад
I always preferred arm and neck submissions over leg submissions in general because with arm and neck submissions, you are attacking from a position where your opponent cannot attack you, or where it is very difficult for him to attack you. You have little or no vulnerability. The same is not really true for leg submissions, where your act of attacking with a leg submission also gives your opponent an opportunity to attack you, to an extent. There is more of a risk when you rely on leg submissions. And I agree that it is important to learn the moves that you “don’t like” - so that you can be able to defend against them.

One theory I have about the guard in MMA or streetfighting - is that it is only good if your opponent is driving his weight into you. If your opponent actually does the correct action - according to the doctrine of BJJ - by posturing up or standing up - then you are better off disengaging your guard and doing an up and base to stand up. There is no sitting butterfly guard in MMA.
@americandissident9062
@americandissident9062 3 месяца назад
This has been done to death. We all know that sitting guard in MMA is trash. This is why it’s only done in tight rulesets. The “guard” is not a technique that is “good” or “bad” for MMA or self-defense. The “guard” is not just one thing or two things or three things. The guard is the concept of using your legs to control hip mobility, explosiveness, distance, and posture of any opponent so that you can sweep, submit, or otherwise get off the bottom in a fight. Anyone with or without training is going to use their “guard” or they end up on the ground. The guard is about defense, control, distance, etc. These concepts of limiting your opponent’s explosive abilities and give yourself a chance to escape the bottom is a priority whether your opponent postures up or not. If your opponent postures up it might or might not be advisable to break away and get back up. You’ll need to read that situation. If you can quickly breakdown that posture and sweep quickly to mount and then go to knee-on-belly, you can throw strikes while keeping your head on a swivel for other attackers. This is just one example. The guard is not a technique. It’s a concept of control.
@perfectsplit5515
@perfectsplit5515 3 месяца назад
@@americandissident9062 "The guard is" "a concept of control." Agreed. The way I think of the guard is that in any position which is considered a guard, -you and your opponent face each other, -your opponent can drive his weight into you to control you, -you cannot drive your weight into your opponent to control him, and -you can use your legs to control him and defend against his attempt to control you. By that criteria, the turtle position is not a type of guard. The 50/50 position is not a type of guard. One theory I have is that the guard is where the tide of battle is determined. If you get the upper hand when you are in the guard, then the tide of battle will be in your favor. Getting on top of him, passing his guard, and submitting him will be relatively easier, as you take advantage of the momentum you have created. If your opponent passes your guard, then the tide of battle is in his favor. You will be fighting an uphill battle as he runs roughshod over you to submit you from the top. In retrospect, I wish all my teachers had forced me to work on my guard during every class, without regard for the result.
@americandissident9062
@americandissident9062 3 месяца назад
@@perfectsplit5515 While you might not be able to force your weight into your opponent while you have him in your guard, you can extend your hips to get his weight pushed back off of you. But I have rarely ever had anyone force much of their weight onto me in my guard. I have control of their hips, and therefore I can simply extend slightly to remove all pressure. An opponent in your guard who tries to crush you with their weight is simply putting themselves into a place where you can work some submissions, and they're also limiting themselves only to body lock passing, if they're able to. I would prefer an opponent tries to crush me in my guard. I can simply extend slightly, move to my hip, and start looking for submissions if they want to stay low like that.

Pretty much all of Palhares' wins are in the first round where there isn't much sweat, so guys have a harder time slipping out of heel hooks and freeing their knees. Same thing with Ian Entwistle, all of his wins are by early 1st round heel hook. Marcin Bandel and Imanari, same thing with those guys.

Just as boxing has flaws (you are not prepared for wrestling), wrestling has its own disadvantages, BJJ has also. That is why MMA is called mixed martial arts, not JOEMA - just one entire martial art, and we will argue which one... Every good martial art has its place in the MMA in some percentages

Ryan Hall says to go to backside 50/50 for this reason. But honestly, you should always be trying to stand up, reverse position, and take the back. Pinning yourself in place on bottom is a bad idea. And sorry to say it, 80% of JiuJitsu is doing just that.

Danaher is probably the most well known bjj coach in the world and he popularized the modern bjj leg lock game. He is very legit but his teaching seems to me be more focused on sport bjj than mma. He used to be GSPs grappling coach so I might be wrong though. I don't know why Matt wouldn't like him or where you got that from however if that's the case it's probably due to him popularizing leg locks in bjj and Matt not enjoying leg locks.
