I've been reading Stephen King since I was 11 years old. I am now 56. It's been an extreme pleasure/scare.

Similar here. I'm 51 but starting reading King's horror stories around age 7-8. I remember my sister read me a bedtime story ... a short story by Stephen King XD Story was "The Boogeyman", I think it was in the collection "Skeleton Key" . And yes it was the one story by King that traumatized me. I read Carrie around same time but that novel didn't bother me as much as the short story. Heck reading Pet Cemetery didn't bother me that bad! ... but then my sister already knew my childhood fears of monsters under the bed and the closet. So she read me the ONE story that that the monster in the closet! lol

I was allowed to read pretty much whatever I wanted. I got dragged out of study hall for reading Valley of the Dolls, placed in the principal's office and my mom was called. (I didn't even know she was home-none of my business). She was put on speakerphone. After she was told my crime, she said, "You're calling me because SHE'S READING???" I never got an apology, but they left me alone afterwards. 🤓📚

Awesome story! I remember in grade school when I was sent to bed at 8 pm every school night. I stood behind my folding bedroom door and read by the pinpricks of light that filtered through. By homeschool I had graduated to reading under the covers by flashlight. Almost every cent of my allowance went to buying more books. My long suffering mother spent more than 10 years hearing "As soon as I finish this chapter!" every time she asked me to do another chore. It's been more than 50 years, and I still find time to read several books every week. I tell my grandchildren that I've traveled all over the world through the magic of books, and I've given them many as books. Some books stick with me much longer than others. It's been decades since I read Valley of the Dolls, but as soon as i read that title Neely and the whole tragic storyline of the book popped back into my mind.

I first read the work of Stephen King many decades ago. My first was the short story, Children of the Corn. That night I fell in love. He is, in my opinion, the only writer of good horror in this century or the last. For me it would be difficult to decide upon my favorite of all his novels, but my favorite of the short stories remains Children of the Corn. I think that, before everyone has tipped their glasses too much at a Halloween party, it should be read aloud to the guests. This may sound excessive, but it could be done and would set the tone for the evening to be certain. I am seriously thinking of doing this myself, but I would have it stated on the invitation every guest coming would be prepared. Of course it could be that I alone would be in attendance. SO BE IT!
