I'm here after seeing Glen's video this morning. I remember seeing this car in RCCA back in 1989 at a World's event and I was floored! It was so rare that none of the hobby shops in my county couldn't even get it!
Thanks for coming over. I do not think they made a lot of them to be honest. I have my built one and 2 nib kits. The built one is getting a full overhaul and will be my runner and I will build a kit for the shelf. Looking forward to both as the brat is just one you don’t see to often.
I knew of this buggy for a few years because of RU-vid but definitely had no knowledge of it back in the day! I can't imagine turning up to my old Sunday race club meet with a Nikko lol but its a nice looking buggy! Super rare stuff!!!
People knock Nikko, but all of us who know Nikko know they made some really cool stuff. These were awesome and just as good as good as all the other hobby grade stuff offered at the time. I haven’t seen a brat in years. My buddy who seemed to have everything when we were kids got one for Christmas. It was awesome fun. Great video 😁
they raced these cars back in the day, so imagine that a NIkko rc car competing with other more known and race proven brands, but the car itself is fantastic, just amazing and Nikko had great brushed motors for those cars. i think the racers who drove these cars made modified parts themselves for the Brat
My first was a lobo that I got at Sears. Toys r us had had a glass case with the better than toy grade rc, you couldn't even touch them. Very cool video 👍
I remember seeing one of these at our local track back in the day and it was a very impressive machine. I’ve always regretted not getting one of these or a Mugen Bulldog, Yokomo dog fighter, RC10…… etc Great video
Vintage wise it's actually a really good looking car for that timeperiod. I have never heard of it, but back then we had no internet. The only stuff i knew was what was in the (little) local hobby store and the folders they had (like the Tamiya guides).
Back in the days I used to run a Nikko F10 Bison (2WD; sort of a RTR Grasshopper); 1:10. Thought it was the highest development of Nikko. I sort of heard about the Dandy Dash but at that time I already had moved to Tamiya/Thundershot so it didn't really get my attention. But never heard of this one. However, thinking about what was state of the art back in the days it's actually totally impressive, what Nikko produced there with hardly any experience in hobby grade. They built in more or less everything that was state of the art these days. Universal drive shafts, FRP chassis, aluminium shocks, belt driven, aluminium re-inforcements... this thing is just wow! Sure they made a few beginners mistakes like the missing adjustable upper arms or so but other than that... Thx for the video!
OMG! That is the most impressive-looking vintage Nikko RC car that I ever ever seen. When I looked back the memory lane, Nikko had never been on par with Tamiya and Kyosho, well..maybe because of their more affordable prices back in the day. This kit definitely changed my mindset about Nikko. 👍
May be only one of a couple of the hobby grade r/c cars by Nikko but boy was it a great looking buggy at that, and definitely one for the gallery Keith, your spoiling us with museum grade stuff you just don't normally get to see. Thanks Cheers :-)
@@rcicons4915 Yeah, i had been looking through all the RC magazines back then studying all of them for over a year!, initially i though of getting the Tamiya HotShot but then the Terra Scorcher came out and that was the one i had to have, I had to pass all my exams in school so that my parents would buy it for me 🙂, the Terra is still one of my favourite.
Really cool!! I have heard of them but never seen one up close or all the parts a pieces like that! Thanks a bunch for sharing! I am looking forward to seeing what it looks like in the gulf color paint scheme!
First time I’ve heard of it, did have some nikko cars but nothing like this. It do remind me of the optima mid a bit and about the same time as the optima mid 😊 thanks for sharing 😊
I remember very very faintly seeing these UP Works Brat kits in my local hobby shop but as a Kid I just wanted my Thunder Dragon etc! Your content is out of this world! Keep up the good work pal 🇺🇸🇬🇧🇺🇸🇬🇧
I’ve heard of Nikko doing a kit car but like a lot of RC’s of that era it was Unattainable for me. Cool video great historical information thanks for sharing.
I remember this car from my younger years but I never new much about them. It was good to see this wonderful car in so much detail. Another great video and I’m loving the content.
I'm really liking these 80's buggys that aren't that common. Great Video Keith 👍 hopefully you will find spare parts to fix the broken ones. Have a lovely weekend
Great video!! I never knew about this one either!! You mentioned Radioshack, here in Australia it was known as Tandy. As a kid I had a few Tandy rc cars, friends had Nikko's, Jet hoppers etc. We all went through AA batteries quickly as you could imagine! My Dad used to put my flat disposable AA batteries in the oven at low temperature for 30 minutes or so, let them cool down, then they'd be half charged, use them again, then you'd have to chuck them out. Did this before saving up for rechargeable AA's and a charger, as at the time, they were very expensive. Again, great vid and it's a good looking car!!! Can't wait for the day you build that Super Sabre!!!!
Yep, fellow Aussie here. Always loved browsing at Tandy. They had everything I liked, RC cars, metal detectors, audio stuff and rechargeable batteries! I think a Nikko Ferrari was my first RC car.
Yeah...Nikko Brat?? I had quite a few Nikko's when I was young. Drove them untill the wheels fell off...🤣...which wasn't to hard to do. But I've never heard of this one. Great looking car. Would love to see it in action. 👍
Neat buggy. Didn't know about that one. Nikko did a little homework for the day. My first. RC sorta was a Cox stock car with a 20 ft vacuum hose. Mid 70's. Nikko jumped in alright. I guess engineering was more than they thought and maybe didn't have the backing for it.
It looks really agressive with that stealth looking body shell ! very cool car from Nikko. To bad that spare parts is almost impossible to get a hold of!! Very nice presentation Keith😄
Beautiful car, from your first video I was thinking it might be my new favourite vintage buggy but then I watched your last video and id never seen a RCL Incident before either and those look awesome! I think I'll reserve judgement for what looks like being quite a while, I look forward to picking many more new favourites. Top work my friend 👏
Cool looking car, like the black paint. “Nikko “ brings back forgotten memories, I didn’t know they made a kit, back in school again. Thanks for the knowledge. Old plastic is a bummer. Well done again, looking forward to the next one.
Always wanted a Nikko when I was a kid, lucky my uncle converted me to Tamiya 🤣 This Brat is so cool though, never heard of it! Thanks for sharing dude 😎
G'day Keith wow that thing looks sick yeah I had a couple of cheap Nico RC boats and cars back in the early days but the Brat is a sick hobby grade car cheers for showing us mate 👍
I really love The Nikko Brat and hopefully I will own one myself soon 🤞🏻Mr Bor Mac my fellow Aussie got me interested in the Brat I think they are something different and unique in their own way, Ahh who am I kidding Keith I think The Nikko Brat is Freaking Cool man and I really want to own one. Going through some of your earlier videos and found this one. Very Cool Keith 👍🏻👍🏻
I had never heard of this car. I remember seeing toy grade Nikkos at Toys r Us, but had no idea they ever made anything hobby grade. Of course, being in Canada, there was a lot of RC stuff we never saw that was available in the US. It is a prett neat looking car with that black shell. I like that you left the windows clear. I'm glad it held together for you to get your video done. 😃 Thanks for another great video Keith!
I think that nikko brat was part of the 1989 champion in Australia, but I don't know which place take or if went to finals, this year won a Schumacher rc... Great video
I had the nikko chipmunk as a little kid I use to run it up and down my street till the batteries died one of my favorite memories of my childhood that and voltron =) =)
Another good be on my dream list ha ha, well I’d be happy with a Dash, sprint or brat I’m not fussy. Nice to see it, Shame about the very fragile plastics though. Very cool
Wow... gotta say I really like this kit 👍 reminds me a bit of a Kyosho lazer, considering its a Nikko it looks well designed and wow that packaging looks top notch. It'll probably be worth you getting a 3D printer so you can replace any brittle parts as the nib one is probably as rare as hens teeth 😁. Another superb video Keith 👍👊👍
That is a brilliant looking buggy, love it's angles and stance. I particularly like the yellow shock mounts, pink shocks and gold universal joints. Super cool! Terrible name though!
I actually just landed another nib. I had all the arms, hubs and uprights 3 d printed so that this will become my runner and I will build a new one for the shelf. I cannot wait. It is going to be an awesome build
Would you believe I raced a Nikko Brat in Australias first 2 vintage events held here in Australia. Raced in the 89 IFMAR at St Ives, Australia. Awesome car
They took a lot of the features from these to make the hurricane/mascot which was also sold by Sears as the lobo 2 and 3, and several other models. I had the hurricane, and although wasn’t a brat it was a fun buggy. Personally I love the what I call “mid grade” stuff from nikko . Bad part is what you said at the beginning, they’re pretty brittle compared to today’s plastics, so if you run em ya gotta be careful 😁
@@rcicons4915 plastic has come a long way since the late 80’s that’s for sure. I made my qd midnight pumpkin a shelf queen because 30 plus year old plastic and bashing around my yard broke the shock mount. I’m ok with that. I brought it back to life, had a little fun and now I’ve got a unique piece on my shelf. Btw if you ever come across the qd clod buster for a decent deal please let me know. I’ve been on the hunt to add to my Tamiya qd collection 😁
Such a shame about the plastics man - it’s a bummer when you break stuff just picking the car up to look at it - reminds me of my crappy SG Coyote 😄 the crumbling plastics anyways… Super super cool piece of RC history either way!!!
It is a great looking buggy. Too bad about the fragility issue. I wonder how competitive these were with the cars they raced against back in the day...
The Nikko Rhino could be competitive in dirt oval racing back in the day. I’ve heard more than once of a Rhino or Golden Arrow winning races or placing. Maybe they were racing Grasshoppers with 380 motor 😂. The Dictator was better. Twin 380s, 4WD, four wheel independent suspension it’s a very good handling RC. With upgrades, it’s as fast or faster than modern hobby grade RCs. The Dandy Dash and Brat were the next level.
Nikko made a boat load of great cars. I only have the hobby grade ones but am always watching vids of the toy grade cars. Just no room for them so I stick to watching others add and restore for their collections.
@@rcicons4915 lol Just drop your parts(not broken ones) to your local 3D Printing Services and they will sort out the scanning and printing for you . This way you get spares that are much more durable, ready in a day or so, you might just end up restoring cars you intended for parts.😆
hi, beautiful work. Do you know where you can find kit 1 to buy or the technical drawings with the frame measurements to buy? I have 5 dandy dashes and 2 super sprints and I would like to transform one of these into a brat, but the kits here in Europe are very rare, so I'm looking for a replica of the frame in kit form (also in carbon) or to produce it myself. Thank you.
