Thanks to a few people who have pointed out the following features of Notability that I did not highlight in the video (the app has updated since - I will update it and play around with it and update this comment with how I feel about it!) 😅😁: - Zooming/auto-advance feature is available in Notability UPDATE: This feature is very, very similar to that in GoodNotes, however with the exception that the blue box (the window that you write into that advances for you) within the zoom window is on the right side as opposed to the left, so once you write into the blue box near the end, the window will advance to the next line but you have to wait a quick second for it. In GoodNotes, because the blue box is on the left, you continue writing from the left, meaning you don't have to wait for the window to advance to the next line. GoodNotes therefore has a better auto-advance / zooming feature IMO compared to Notability because it's less disruptive. - Side-by-side note feature in Notability whereas Goodnotes doesn't have this :) UPDATE: This is a GREAT feature that I wish GoodNotes had. However, I do feel like this is more useful if you have a bigger iPad because the side-by-side documents are more uncomfortable and not practical to write on if you have a smaller screen like mine (9.7"). Other than that, there is really nothing bad to say about it!

Yes! I rather tend to Goodnotes, but the possibility to rotate your notes is something that would be really important to me. And also the option to record a lecture is something I already know from OneNote, it would be really great if they would include it in Goodnotes.

Personally I'd say get Notability! They added a new feature where you can erase partially or whole if that is a concern! I'd say with this online school situation you can now record your lessons via zoom without getting a lecture haha unlike Goodnotes! Let me know which you chose!

A lot of the cons for Notability have been fixed: - now there is a partial eraser - you can change it so its pressure sensitive or not - you can also draw shapes now and edit proportions and border & fill - there is also completely custom colours for pens now, which I believe is not in GoodNotes - ALSO notability has the zoom feature she just missed it

update for notability: erase without reseating everything customizable color create circles open 2 notes on the same screen choose between pressure and no pressure when writing and more but i can’t think of them rn

Tsering Dolma yeah they do! it was actually present in this video but i just think she didn’t know how to do it. you can either hold the screen for a few seconds or the magnifying glass on the bottom right corner

If Goodnotes would only have the recording option...🙄 I do use Goodnotes though. Right now I correspond my audio recordings with my Goodnotes by title & date. Works for me!

I am a Biology major with a pre med concentration. My favorite subject to study is science because I love how everything is related and overlaps to one another. You can't teach biology without a bit of chemistry and physics, and chemistry is essential to understand biological mechanisms and basic physical properties. Your vids made me get an iPad and Apple pencil and it was by far the best investment I've made in a while. Love your vids. keep up the good work

Yes, the highlighter problem made me choose GoodNotes. I highlight a lot with different colors, which signal different things to me.

I have both apps but mainly use notability for the following reasons: It’s very easy to open a PDF with it (eg presentations from the professors) and write in it. I only know the newer version, there 2 files can be open at the same time (which i use all the time for summaries). Shapes can now be drawn by simply holding the Pen on the page after you have finished it, it can form circles, ellipses, squares, rectangles, straight lines, triangles, symmetrical 5 and 6-sided Forms (i don’t know the words in English) as well as random shapes. The eraser now has 2 modes (entire or selected erasing). Adding pages, pictures... is really easy. When writing on a PDF (only then) you can write from the edge of the slide or at any place (and save your 3 Favorite writing styles). The colors have also improved, there are multiple slides of preferred ones and you can make your own and save them. I don’t really use GoodNotes, partly because when the backgrouns is dotted you cant write on the keybord and stay within the lines, which was a downpoint for me. The text does not have an automated starting point, from where you can write and it will always be the same. Therefore i barely use it...

You can have two notes open side by side in Notability! You can’t in Goodnotes though.

My favorite subject is psychology. Right now I am enrolled in a Psychology course and I absolutely love it. I love learning about how people work... what motivates, what causes their actions - all in all why people do the things they do. This helps me so much with my relationships with friends and family and how I can best help them.

there is a new 2020 update for Notability! the highlighter doesn’t mix with the words there is a new lazer pointer for presentations there is also a horizontal option and there is also a stickies option, where you can add little post it notes on your notebook! :)

Excellent job. I use both, but Notability more frequently. The writing experience just seems more to my taste. You mentioned the zoom feature for Good Notes, but Notability has that also. The recorder on Notability is a nice idea, but it picks up the tapping noice from my writing making playback later a real problem for me. Maybe I just write too hard.

this is a super late addition to this but if you wanted to record audio while taking notes, if possible you could put in a headphone or connect headphones to your ipad and it wouldnt pick up the tapping noise as much

This is by far the most detailed and comprehensive review about these two apps i have ever seen on RU-vid. I have been looking for such a nice review video with clear voice and background, organized comparisons and display form and honest opinion which corresponds to my study habit for a long time. Good video. But one thing I want to add. You can easily draw shapes within a note. Just draw a line and hold it for a sec at its end. It will automatically straighten the line. Using a grid template it will even stick to the grid. This way you can draw perfect shapes in Notability. :)

Great video as always. An anesthesiologist/anaesthetist here. I used to like physics in school so much. How the world works around you was what I liked about physics. BTW, I have both Goodnotes 4 and Notability. So may I add few things: you can search in all documents at same time in Notability while you can't do that in Goodnotes. The new update to Notability let's you open two documents side by side. When You import a pdf in Goodnotes 4, it will import it as it is while Notability adds a large white margin making everything smaller and harder to read. I like everything in Goodnotes 4 except one thing: I can't rest my hand on the screen while writing when I get closer to the lower edge of screen. You said before that you have a trick to solve that but you didn't tell ☹️. Waiting for your next video.

@@briang1310 by watching this video I'd say goodnotes is much better. I hate the highlighter on notability. The eraser is bad too and the shape drawing is ridiculous. Audio recording and double notes opened at the same time are useless to me. Though I hate the horizontal scrolling in goodnotes. Still it is hard to decide, one of them should really implement the good features of the other ffs!

@@briang1310 yup, correct, thanks for your reply 👍🏻 Still I can't understand why they can't make a better highlighter: just let the user choose the desired behavior, one like it is right now and another one to simply put one level of highlight beneath the text, no matter how many times you draw it. The eraser could be improved too: at least 2 modes, where you can erase full strokes or just portions of 'ink'. They should look at zoomnotes for this, you can even erase by brush type! That's awesome becouse you can choose to erase just the pencil for example, or just the highlighter, or just the pen or whatever.

Right now, band is my favorite subject because it's not really a class, it's more of a team/family. If I were to choose an actual class, I'd say math because it's every problem you do is like a puzzle, whether it's easy or not.

Art is my favorite subject. I never was good at math, English or history. I was even sent to a continuation high school because I had very bad grades. It was then when I was placed in art. Changed my world. I started to focus a little more in my general classes. I think I needed a little happiness to push me to do better. I eventually graduated high school. I never pictured myself graduating. But i did it! 2011.

I've started uni now so all I really study is science. But I love making notes for science bc it has a great balance between notes and pictures/diagrams that aid the learning. For me it's so interesting to learn about all the different processes and how they basically keep life going. I've wanted to go paperless for a really long time and finally doing so this year after all the iPad productivity videos I've seen and having one of these apps would be so helpful!

Good that I saw your video before purchasing Notability, I did do a lot of illustration, so the erase function is definitely not friendly for me. So I ended up with Goodnotes. Your comparison is very professional, showing side by side with your comments, it’s getting rare bcs most you tuber preferred to show their face instead. Appreciate it.

Currently at uni studying biomedical science so my favourite subject to study is anatomy. I just find it so interesting to look at the structure and functions of organs/tissues inside the human body because they are all do diverse yet work so efficiently. This can also link to what happens to each tissue when something goes wrong in the body and I find it incredible how one tiny change in one tissue can cause so many changes throughout the body which either help make the issue better or make it worse.

My favorite class yet as been Political Science. I love it as it's a crazy blend of geography, sociology, psychology, economics, ecology, and history! I've always been very imaginative when listening to stories so reading about various different topics and events in Polisci, it's always been easy to do a little character development to help liven up my notes which drawings.

My favorite subject to study is astrophysics - as an aerospace engineering major, I became fascinated with stars, constellations, celestial bodies in the sky ever since I was a child! I love observing the night sky and hope to become an astronaut one day. But your video was very helpful in explaining the differences between these two, thank you so much!

My favourite subject has to be Philosophy. It’s such an enriching topic even if it isn’t leading me towards my career path. It helps open your eyes to new ideas in this world and to be aware of new things! I think we all need that in this world. I love it a lot

Hi Janice, thank you for the video, it is very helpful. I think i will go with Goodnotes, because other than what you have already said, Goodnotes seems to have better PDF annotation function as well. My favorite subject is clinical pharmacology. I just lover studying pharmacology to understand why and how the drug works in that specific condition.

Hey Janice! You made a really helpful and awesome comparison video! Keep up the great work! My favorite subject is applied statistics. It interests me so much because I get to learn how to creatively work with data by using technical and "dry" math theories and actually use them in the industry. I graduated college last may with a Math degree and currently self-studying for my actuarial exams. Your videos helped me decide which iPad to get and I just recently bought the new 2018 iPad. I can now save tons of papers when studying for my exams :)

My favourite subject to study is chemistry! I love how you can use math or logical thinking to get from not knowing some properties of something to having a more complete understanding of the matter that it consists of

Good insight. Chemistry is an amazingly powerful and conceptually rich part of Science. The entire physical world that surrounds us, including ourselves, is made of molecules, and the properties of that physical world are a reflection of the molecular structure. Truly amazing! Good studying.

Currently I am a nursing student and my favorite subject is human physiology because the way the human body functions is simply amazing. I really enjoyed learning how each organ system works and how each one is integral in keeping us alive.

Writing is something I truly cherish. The freedom of being able to write about whatever I want is something I hold dearly with me. Writing is an art form that allows creative expression and opens up windows for discussion. I enjoy writing fictional stories, poetry and much more. With all that being said it is probably clear that English is my favorite subject in school. Studying the amazing work of famous poets and writers is something so fascinating and inspiring to me as I myself wish to become an author or journalist one day. The feeling of putting words to paper is unlike no other and essentially indescribable and although this may seem prone to hyperbole I assure you that my passion for Writing is like no other. Not only do I find writing enjoyable I also feel it is an extremely beneficial skill. Being able to write in a professional manner allows you to engage with people in a more efficient way and is something I feel that could be extremely helpful in the future! My favourite subject to study is science because I like to learn about how things work and different and what happens when you mix chemicals with on another. It also helps me use my knowledge and determine what would happen is I mix something with a different substance and other all it just fascinating

My favorite subject to study is English & Literature. I enjoy writing stories, taking notes, brainstorming, pulling apart documents & critically thinking about different perspectives to look at new reading materials each day. I am a Political Science major so the majority of my classes are reading & writing. I just bought a new iPad Pro and this Goodnotes Subscription would be very resourceful for my studies!

My fav subject is food and nutrition. It opens a new perspective of what we are consuming, like the essential vitamins and minerals. Now, whenever I am eating something or simply sees food, I instantly think of the nutrition it provides us. And more importantly, I now have a heather diet and I hope you too. BTW, nice comparison between the 2 popular note taking app. Keep it up!

The super feature that Notability has is that when you record audio when you write, later when you replay the recording, it shows you a timeline of your writings which is really cool. like it shows you what exactly you were writing at a certain point in your recording.

You’ve probably already seen me through the comments already (or maybe not). But I still have a preference for noteability. The three top features that got me to use noteability over goodnotes are: 1) voice recording- this will save you a great deal of trouble if you’re taking a hard subject. If you’re sitting back to back through 4 hour lectures then you might miss something or sometimes you get professors that talk waaayy too fast. A lot of people don’t think how tired you end up feeling and won’t retain/recall much of the information. I see this a lot in class when people ask questions or go to office hours to talk to the professor. 2) side by side note viewing- this is pretty obvious why I like it. So I can see multiple notes. I save a pdf version of my textbook and lab book so I can fill in the answers while I’m reading. 3) Rotation of handwritten notes- This feature is good for cramming notes into one page so you don’t have to spend time flipping through pages, fixing your notes when you create a mistake, making more symmetrical designs for notes.

I loved my art classes in high school but they didn’t feel like real “school” subjects because they were too fun. My other favorite subject was science, mostly biology. Living things are so incredible. I really enjoyed learning about how and why things work like they do.

Nursing student and of course it has to be all my science based classes. Love the pros and cons to both and going paperless has made such a difference in my life. I can review my class notes while waiting for my morning coffee or just sharing notes has become a breeze. Thanks for your videos keep up the good work.

Pdf annotation is best done in PDF expert. I import all of my PDF books and lectures there.

It was very helpful to see you actually using the apps side by side! I think I'll get Good Notes first just for taking notes like in a regular notebook, and then use Notability for annotating lecture slides during lecture, when I actually have in-person lecture again! Thanks for your help!

My favorite subject to study is actually my biology courses! I'm on a pre-physician assistant track at my college and I really don't know why I like biology so much because it definitely makes me cry the most (lol) but it's usually pretty interesting material. I think this app is going to be helpful for microbio and biostats this semester!

I love studying Art history. That's my minor in college with my major being Painting. As an aspiring artist it is so fun and interesting learning about the masters and all of the techniques and movements that have made the art world what it is today! thank you for your video! Taking notes on an Ipad is something I've been considering and this has helped me see what kinds of apps are out there! :)
