That church is not Christianity. Christianity is not about any church it is about a relationship with your savior Jesus Christ. He was not a teacher he is the savior and he and he alone is the way to the father. Jesus gave his life so we could. have life.

There wasn't room for me and my family of 6. There isn't room unless you check all the boxes or unless you are willing to regularly subject yourself to commentary about how you don't fit in. Problem is- it doesn't begin at the local membership. It seems from the leaders at the top. "Never take counsel from those who don't believe." The fear mongering, othering and ostracization is pushed every 6 months. It is extremely divisive and problematic. The reason it is such a problem in the greater church is because it is the narrative of the inspired leaders. No change will happen until it begins at the top.

Amen little sister..I was born into the church but most of my life was spent in inactivity (not a lack of testimony) BECAUSE of the harsh judgements of our brothers and, especially, sisters in our church. It wasn't until I was 55 years of age that I decided that I was no longer going to allow any mortal to keep me from worshiping my Father and my Savior in the way that THEY have set for US. You are beautiful, strong, exceedingly worthy and a light set upon a hill. Thank you for all that you are💕💖💕

I became inactive after my divorce, because of the way members treated me. Took me a while to understand that I go to church to worship MY God and My Savior. I go to partake of the Sacrament and renew my covenants. I no longer care what people think or say about me. The only one's opinion that matter to me now is my wife and the Lord.

Could some of these people who write all that nasty stuff actually be disaffected members, or even anti-LDS people who want to make you think they are members, knowing you will react, and rightfully so, but at the same time, making non-LDS or even LDS who follow you, hate the church? It blows my mind that we have members of the church who are that vindictive, nasty and hateful! That’s inconceivable to me. But it is also inconceivable to me that so many young, middleaged and elderly members, RMs, bishops and other high profile people are choosing to ‘come out’ and tell the world that they no longer believe, and say they have left the church, &c. That makes me sad. We love you and have done so since Day 1 - 10 years ago, when we first read your amazing story. You’re an inspiration, and a beautiful one ar that. Please ignore the haters. If they are members, shame on them. We down here in New Zealand think you’re amazing. Keep shining, sista.

Al, you're testimony has quite literally helped me build my own. I have never met someone with a faith like yours. You're amazing. I was raised in the church, but fell away in my teen years. Now, 15 years later, I have decided to come back, your book, was of the first faith based books I have ever read, simply because of the title: "More Than The Tattooed Mormon". It t helped me realize my self worth and where our focus should be as disciples of Christ. I understand the struggle completely. Focusing on the faith is all we can do. Carl Lee, even though I'm an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I live in the United Kingdom, I've seen exmembers around my area are nothing like what American exmembers are, the views and reactions tend to be very different. The exmembers in the United Kingdom actually continue saying things like "just leave them alone", they are not supportive towards the Church practices but neither are they supportive towards people disturbing the lives of others including members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. That's how I see the way to do it, live our own lives with just general respect towards each other (I'm not saying respect bad behaviour like the behaviour been said here). It sounds to me the closer someone is to Utah, the more insulting and hateful they act.

Several years ago, I saw you in the Jordan River Temple and exchanged a smile with you. I echo one of the prior comments that perhaps this is your calling----to shine your light that others may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in Heaven, whether they be in or outside the church. Perhaps we can all remember that church is a hospital for sinners (all of us), not a museum for saints (even though we're trying to be).

I only know about you from my daughter. She feels alienated from “the church.” In the past she has shared with me the inspiration she takes from you, and I appreciated you so much for that. However, I did not take the time to listen to you for myself. Until today. I was watching random videos and came across this. My first reaction was sorrow and shame for my brothers and sisters who have treated you with such disregard. I felt love and compassion for you and for my daughter who has experienced similar reactions. Then I heard a message that turned the tables and was directed at me. I don’t love myself or care for myself as I deserve to being a daughter of God. Hearing your words this morning was a special gift from my Father just when I needed it most. I then received loving guidance from Him on what I can do to make a difference in this world. Another of my Father’s tender mercies. Thank you for sharing your voice.

I have been inactive for awhile. I still believe, i still pray, occasionally will open the BOM and the Bible. And when I did show up to church every now and then I would get so much judgement. Mostly from the elderly. One example: I was engaged to get married the second time around. (My first husband passed away) i was so excited, my bishop was excited and my Sunday school teacher was so excited for me. An elderly couple asked if he was a member and I replied no and they were quick to tell me i shouldn’t marry him, it wouldn’t last. But what they didn’t know... my first husband was very abusive. Didn’t allow me to go to church, Slam the door in missionaries face, didn’t allow me to see my family. My current non member husband encourages me to go to church, (when church was open) he prays with me, he knows how much I love our Heavenly Father and knows how important my faith is. We have our obstacles but my non member husband supports me and loves me unconditionally.

I am a convert, and in what I would call a "progressive" ward. Very open, accepting, and loving. My husband, who is a life long member, went inactive because of an elderly ward not supporting him or his family, but instead judging and criticising. He is now active because of our ward. Take heart. The church is growing and maturing. I believe it will keep changing for the better. Especially the more we stick to doctrine, and less to dogma.

Some 50 years ago I was able to teach and baptize a man who had dropped out of society upon returning to the states after being in the military and serving in Vietnam Nam. He and his wife lived in a shack in the swamps of the Deep South. The first Sunday he came to church in bib overalls and a patched flannel shirt long hair and a beard. The local bishop spoke to my companion and I after sacrament meeting and wanted to know what we were doing bringing such an individual to church. To make a long story short, he was baptized. About 10 years ago this same individual contacted me, he had been a bishop, a member of a stake presidency he had two sons both had been bishops. He wanted to thank “his missionaries” for seeing what he could become and not what he was back in the late 60’s. With God all things are possible despite what short sighted people see or think. Thanks for sharing there are many more that are with you than are against you. And that is only those you can see, not counting the angels who are watching.

Yes. Al "the Tattooed Mormon" Fox was called of God to teach the members of the church the true gospel. So how about he use the leaders of the church? God instead uses an obscure token as his teaching tool when he has had leaders for this church for 2 centuries that could have been teaching this. Instead, the leaders say they agree with not judging, but everything they do is to reinforce judging others, racism, bigotry, etc. Yeah...keep telling yourself Al is the gospel teacher God called.

I was sitting around a campfire with the YW this last week; my daughter present with me. I have tattoos-but no one can see them; a back piece. I have been a member all my life, but was inactive for 3years when I was a teen. Recently, my aunt decided to spread that knowledge of my tattoos to a few gossipers/haters/social murders, and don't you know one of them was in my new ward. This woman sat around the campfire and started to talk about how disgusting tattoos were. And said if you got them, you should get them somewhere you could cover them up if you came back to the church after that so as not to shame yourself. I left the campfire with my daughter right then and thought of something that I have thought of for years Al, 'if gossip were a tattoo you could see, people (men and women) would instantly be surprised to be equipped with full body gloves.' CS Lewis once said if we could see the true state of the spirits of men with no later reveal of the natural man concealed inside, we would see the most hideous creatures appear from the most socially guarded men and women who hide behind their facade of perfection. It pains me to see this mindset. I live in the west, and the culture surely has changed over the last 20 years. However, I am like you. The only one that can keep me from heaven is me. I love what Pres. Hinckley Said, "My membership in the church means more than all the evil that man can do to me." (paraphrase)

Just want to share this, EVERY member needs to understand this! A lady went to the Bishop and said, "I won't be attending church anymore." He said, "May I ask why?" She said, " I see people on their cell phones texting and typing during the sacrament and other meetings. Some are gossiping, some just aren't living right, some are sleeping, some are staring at me! I never get home taught and never hold the 'best callings' there are just too many hypocrites." The bishop was silent. Then he said, "Can I ask you to do something for me before you make your final decision?" She said, "Sure, whats that?" He said, "Take a spoon full of water and walk around the church two times and don't let any water fall on the floor. Can you do that?" She said, "Yes, I can do that!" She went and got a spoon full of water and walked around the church two times. She came back and proudly said, "It's done." The bishop asked her, "Did you see anybody on their phone?; Did you see anyone gossiping?; Was anybody living wrong?; Did you see anyone sleeping?" She said, "I didn't see anything because I was so focused on this spoon, so the water didn't spill out." He told her, "When you come to church, you should just focus on the Savior so that you don't fall. That's why Jesus said, "Come follow me, He did not say follow Mormons." Don't let your relationship with God be determined by how others relate to God. Let it be determined by how focused you are with God." “Going to church” is about following the Savior. Don’t worry about others. Don’t be offended by the bishop. Remember your covenants. We are taught that we should come as we are and worship the lord. How truly amazing it would be if we would all remember that it doesn't matter who you are on the outside, but the lord looketh on the heart. ❤

I am feeling so sad that the commandment to love as Christ loves gets lost to some of us. You are so beautiful. You are a princess, a daughter of God, worthy of love. And love should come especially from your family, the people who have also covenanted to mourn with those who mourn, and comfort those in need of comfort. A huge hug from me. You are wonderful. Thank you for sharing your troubles with us so each of us can evaluate our own actions in regards to others.

I am an East Coast member who’s family joined the church just before I turned 8. I went to BYU in the late 80’s and the culture shock hit me like a ton of bricks. Hearing people say that I lived in the “mission field” rubbed me the wrong way. How cocky of them. I was older than most in my class as I was 21 and felt shamed that I was not married yet. I started wearing a band on my wedding finger because I did NOT go to the Y to find a husband! Lol. Before that I had always wanted to move that way so that when I did have a family, my kids would have more friends in the church. But after that experience I was gung ho for not doing that. Luckily when I did get married to a member from back home, he felt the same way. It was always mind boggling to me that members could be so judgmental. It wasn’t until just now listening to your circumstances that I thought this reminds me sort of how the Nephites became more wicked than the Lamanites. Think about it. We are all sinners. There is no getting out of it. Satan is here to temp us. Every one of us. For those of us who live where the church & truth abounds, Satan has different ways to tempt us & tear us apart. What someone like me who lives in a place where I need to hold fast to my religion because most of my friends & acquaintances are not members, I have another set of temptations than someone in Utah might have where Satan may be limited in his arsenal. Pride is a huge thing in the scriptures that leads to the demise of nations. Just because we have the gospel does not keep us safe from sin. In fact, it gives Satan more reason to harp on us. When someone judges me, it HURTS. But I have to remind myself that that is their sin to bear and try to overcome. Unfortunately judging is something that can be handed down to the next generation. Just like we see loud & clear with the Black Lives Matters movement and civil rights that we have always dealt with. We teach our kids how to act towards others. Fortunately those of the younger generation seem to be rising up to change this. Of course Satan is in the thick of this and using anger & fear to divide many of us. We need to all stand strong for righteous change.

Hello Kim, I was once a Mormon myself. I along with my brother and grandmother were baptized at Joseph Smith's birthplace in the town of Sharon Vermont in the spring of 1974. I'm no longer a member of the church, neither is my brother. I and my brother became disillusioned with the church. I think they ask for too much money in tithes and offerings. They push marriage a lot too.

Through much struggle, she is now married to a wonderful priesthood holder with one child and one on the way. You were such an amazing example to her through your journey. I won't forget the day that I was visiting my in-laws in South Jordan and we went to the temple. I sat through the session staring at one of the temple workers. She just shown with the light of Christ. I couldn't put my finger on it initially as to where I knew her from but after a while I was able to glimpse a tattoo and realized who I was in the session with. And now, 20 years later I am profoundly grateful, because in my loneliness of not being accepted by those outside the church because I was a member the church, and not being accepted by those in the church for reasons i can only guess, I came to know how much God and my Saviour love me, and how much the love ALL of us ❤️, along so much more of what you so brightly shared here. The "Mormon Culture" (not to be confused with the Restored Gospel) is fraught with hypocrites -- people who want to LOOK like they are believers, but who have not actually been CONVERTED. That CONVERSION is (by it's definition) the CHANGE that comes ONLY through the Holy Spirit and by the Grace and Power of the Savior's Atonement. People who have been converted know (quietly, deep down inside) that we are ALL in need of forgiveness, grace, inspiration, and personal revelation to help us become more like Christ. One story that has always stuck with me is when my mom, who was a convert, was having difficulties because of prideful members being clique-ish or critical, told her mom she didn't want to go to church because of the members. My grandma, who was also a conver, got in her face, looked her straight into her eyes, and flat out asked her, "who do you believe in, the church['s message] or the people?" My mom responded , "the church['s message]." Then my grandmother responded, "Then to he** with the people!" By this, my mother clearly got the message; that the church - the message of the restored gospel, the nature and character of God, and plan of salvation - is perfect, but the people, who God works through to spread that message, is not perfect. With that, she was able to endure the prideful and hurtful behavior of some of the members, and just roll her eyes and grit her teeth, vowing that the members weren't going to push her away from a message she knew was good and true. Sometimes the members are the biggest obstacle to the progress of the work, either by not opening their mouths but having an open heart, or by not having an open heart but an open mouth.

Remember what Zig Ziglar said, "If you let someone come between you and God, it just means they are closer to God than you are." It's our relationship with God that matters.

"Everything else is just noise" is the truth. It's only about God, me, and loving other people. Thanks Al for your witness. I'm sorry people haven't been nice to you. Keep on going sister!

For what it's worth, I taught a Gospel Doctrine lesson in Utah a few years ago using your story as the basis. It's true that many members have not yet learned to judge righteously. The Lord looks on the heart, as should we.

Dear Al. I love you. I think you're a great person. Two Sundays ago, a thirty year old man was baptized and is a new member of my ward. He is so tattooed all over and I didn't look at him for his tattoos. I looked in his eyes and said, "congratulations, welcome to our ward." He had such a light about him. Keep going.

This really broke my heart. Why would people say such silly things? It's none of their business anyway! If they felt like they should make it their business, they should do so in love not negativity. I'm sorry there are silly people out there and you had to run into them :-(

I like how she's claimed the behaviour is more to do with location as I agree, I live in the UK and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints just let people leave if they want to, and the majority of people who decide to leave don't support the negative treatment by critics. They just generally don't support negativity towards one another. They are not judgemental which is good in one way but bad in another.

Well, I had a neighbor who asked me who dud my yard work; I told her; I then asked later if she hired him. She said, "oh no, never!! I just like my workers have that celestial smile (indicating the garment line seen through a shirt)".... REAALLY? And we are a welcoming church? And we want to convert others? Yet, reject someone because there is no garment showing? Yup, its a culture all its own, driven by judgement; your ancesters; your relatives (I once had a bishop who was Thoman Monson's cousin, and brought it up with pride at tithing settlement) .... and this makes him extra special? .. Aly, you are terrific!!

Thank you for your testimony. I am someone who grew up in the Church in Vermont. I served a mission and then got caught up in porn and due to some poor decisions took myself out of the Church through an excommunication. 12 years later I am working on getting back into the Church. Thanks to my wife who has been a rock for me, I am closer today than I was when we got married. Your testimony has brought me the strength to avoid temptation today. Thank you so much.

I have been sitting here for about 45 minutes reading all the comments below. They are inspiring, and I have enjoyed all the love they are giving back to you. I too feel like there is a difference in members of the church in different locations. I was born and raised in Utah. I married and moved to Mesa, AZ. when I was 19. I have lived in many wards, have felt loved and welcome in them. I had a neighbor from one of my wards move to Utah, and she expressed to me how different she felt the people were in her ward there. She said she felt like she was an outsider looking in. I have heard others express this also. I don't understand the difference, but I love all of the comments below. I feel the same as many of them. You are wonderful. You are a daughter of God, he loves you. You are inspiring. I think you are letting your light shine, and you are beautiful inside and out. I just happened upon this video, but I will be subscribing to your channel, and look forward to seeing many more of your videos. Don't forget, we are all imperfect people. Some of us are further along than others. There are more people that love you than do not. God Bless you in your journey.

I am LDS too...the most judgemental people i know....and i just keep my mouth shut and think to myself....a lot of people are going to get a rude wake up when Christ comes...i am not particularly social in church...i go my own way...i listen and easily spot those whose fear rises every time someone is a bit different...i think you are terrific and said it plain here....and wish you Godspeed on your mortal journey.

I am very impressed with your testimony...along with the elders quorum that I belong to that I shared your Ensign College devotional. You have an amazing spirit and you are one of the greatest members of our church that I have seen. Please continue to share! You are serving as a missionary of Jesus Christ and he was right in sending you on this journey over serving a full time mission. You would never have gained the solid testimony that you have without your amazing journey! Love you Sister Carraway!

Al, I love ALL the things you have shared. I am a member of the LDS Church, and a convert also. You are correct in sharing that there is a cultural difference in a certain location. You are amazing. Heavenly Father and Christ LOVE YOU TOO!!! All those who have criticized...need to look in the mirror and then get on their knees. LOVE YOU!!!

I really love your spirit I was so inspired by one of the talks you gave about how you became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ, and I love what you have to say in other personal testimonies you have shared it helped pull me out during a dark season I had of my faith where I struggled to feel God’s love living in depression. I felt your testimony is so pure, and beautiful to the source. If anyone ever tries to say unkind things and saying you or anyone don’t belong are not founded on Christ and need to reflect and need to repent.

I was baptized in 2000. And yeah, I've felt a lot of persecution mostly from outside the Church (family & friends). But also from within the Church! It hurts too!! But I know Heavenly Father loves me. I know He loves you. And I have taken upon myself the name of Jesus Christ. And I am not ashamed of it!!! I'm still a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. And I know the Church is true. That it is the very Kingdom of God on Earth. There is a Great Separation coming! Don't let the Devil drive you out of the Church! Stay strong sister, from a fellow Saint from Detroit, MI.
