Due to the lack of Chris Rea slide guitar covers I have decided to make some semi-tutorial videos myself regarding this unfairly underrated musician.
While testing some free-software audio tools I managed to record this full instrumental version of Nothing To Fear from the 1992 album God's Great Banana Skin.
No tabs but I'd give some reasonable playing tips upon request as long as my limited musical knowledge allows it.
GEAR:
GUITAR: Squier Strat Affinity - Metallic Red Rosewood (Open E tuning).
EFFECTS CHAIN:
1) Ibanez TS-808 Tube Screamer (Overdrive: 9 o'clock; Tone: max.; Level: 11 o'clock).
2) Boss CS-3 Compression-Sustainer (Level & Sustain: 12 o'clock; Tone: maximum; Attack: 11 o'clock).
3) Boss RV-3 Digital Reverb / Delay (Mode: 10; all the other knobs: 12 o'clock).
4) Boss GE-7 Equalizer: adjust to avoid noise and too much bass.
SLIDE: Jim Dunlop 211 Bottleneck.
FREE SOFTWARE (running on a Debian GNU/Linux wheezy / sid amd64 box):
1) Ardour: track recording, mixing and processing.
2) Hydrogen: drum sequencing.
3) Qsynth / VMPK: synth sequencing.
4) JACK: audio server / router
5) Kdenlive: video editing

It is so brilliant. The way you caught every single note and reproduced it in the slightest detail. I will not comment about Chris Rea"s Songwritting and guitar playing, I am a great fan and I could writte a whole book about it. But your interpretation is so perfect, how much I'd'love to be able to do that....By the way could you please solve my questions about Rea"s guitar tuning? I am lost between everything I could have read. I d"like the exact tuning string by string for this song and for road to hell please. Thank you if possible and again: Bravo!

I feel your heat in dusty whispers The wind is cold around your moon It's getting hard to keep our distance I know your time is coming soon Don't point your dream on my horizon Don't take your rose too far from home Please don't forget we're not each other Each soul has black thorns of his own I see you dancing Your song is clear You've got to show me, got to show me There's nothing to fear Nothing to fear I have my loved ones you have yours So let us gaze upon the feast In God's own name let's eat together In God's own name please come in peace See how our children play together While you and me we stand alone I know we'll never be each other If I leave you leave me alone I see you dancing Your song is clear You've got to show me, got to show me There's nothing to fear Nothing to fear

I realize that man, i was referring to the ACTUAL A and D strings in normal tuning, it only went out a "bit" as you went on..no biggie, sounds great:)) Sounds damn near as good as Chris:) Love this guy, have for decades:) Just never bothered working it out before. I have mainly used slide for blues, but ime expanding that now, thanks to you, again, GREAT WORK:)

@daysleeper6 Thanks! No, really not any mod, nor the strings are set higher than they were from the dealer. I can't remember the gauge but I'm pretty sure they are normal (0.10). Of course the higher the strings are, the harder you can slide, and also thicker strings give you more sustain and "substance". But do not worry about those issues for practising as long as you can slide pressing carefully and use a compressor. Happy sliding!

@sorenjess Thanks! Yes, the Maranello is a very good buy (~400 euros for a somewhat dark nice humbucker sound, if you like it). Maybe the fret work is a little bit rough but lemon oil should fix things up. Anyway, cheaper gear may fit as well as long as it sounds good to your ear (see my Squier + amp + various l gadgets cost less than 200 euros for a starter pack). I'm planning to record a full cover of The Road To Hell and I Can't Wait For Love among others so stay tuned! ;-)

@Nakke144 I neither categorize riffs on their technical difficulties but you know what I mean. Knopfler and Rea have been my "mentors" since around 1988 so I could not tell you specific favourite pieces without having to thrash many others. That's a clear sign for me that Rea keeps high-quality standards along his career (but I prefer slide work pieces). IMHO Rea has been increasing the quality of his works while I think Knopfler hasn't. That's why I seldom listen to the latter nowadays.

@Fenderado Cant wait for more Chris Rea - covers. It bugs me that there are almost no tabs availibale of his songs, i would really like to learn them... Soft top, hard shoulder is probably the song i would most like to play.

Knopfler is my main influence on guitar and he "slips in" sometimes when playing other styles. But for sure CR and MK styles are quite different though they share common grounds: fingerpicking, clean Strat sound and british soft-rock.

Hi Fenderado! Great Cover and Sound! Finally someone did a cover of this great Chris Rea song... I adore Chris and try to play slide,too. What I really would like to know is if you did any changes on your Squier to slide better?Did you set the strings higher? What string gauge do you use ? 0.10 or thicker like 0.13 ? I read somewhere that Chris uses 0.13...Thanks for your video and answer! Greetings from Germany

@loqueyotediga1968 Gracias!

@Fenderado Well, on the other hand i am no newcomer to music. I have played drums for 8 years, so im not a complete noob. This is just the first time i am picking up a guitar with inent. And i categorize my favourite riffs/licks/solos or whatever just by how good they sound to my ear, not how hard they are to play for instance. Do you have any favourite pieces by Chris Rea? I am a huge fan of his, so i am just curious.

Rea uses open E almost always for slide work with some few exceptions which is not the case of Auberge IMHO as he can be seen playing Pinky (which is always in open E). You may want to check Nakke144 uploaded video of Chris showing slide guitar playing on his special Signature Stratocaster (you can also find it in my channel).

Saludos.

Yes, great compliment also from myself! I am also a chris-rea-fanatic and I even grew up on electric guitar with his special and own way of slide-guitar. But I mostly use to play between the G and the D strings. Would be any kind´s of improvement´s to change to the low E and A string?
@Nakke144
@Nakke144 13 лет назад
@Fenderado But im am just a beginner, so tabs are pretty crucial for me at this stage. And i cant agree with the "knopflerized"-statement about STHS :) Sure, there are similarities, as there often are, but Rea still has his own style, wich shines through in that song aswell. AND it has one of the best guitar riffs i have ever heard!
@Fenderado
@Fenderado 12 лет назад
@19BUDDYHILL93 I assume you mean to play on the low E and B strings (6th & 5th) instead of on G# and E (3rd & 4th) as we are on an open E tuning. Not an improvement, just different intervals plus Chris plays the beginning of this tune on those strings as you may check out in some live videos to achieve a fatter sound. But he uses all six strings to play it in fact...

I see you are very into Chris Rea, so I was wondering... do you have any idea what tuning does he use for his slide work on auberge??:) and I mean that 1993 live version in Germany, with that long and cool intro? I so want to learn it and play along with him!:D

@Fenderado

@MultiKoles Could you please explain what do you mean?
@Fenderado
@Fenderado 13 лет назад
@Nakke144 You like that riff and that's fine but sure you have to listen to some more riffs before stating that (you say you are a beginner, so you probably won't tell the similarities which are objectively many). Because I have experienced it in the past, I know one can feel hugely enthusiastic about a solo, riff or whatever, specially when not being able to play it, but with time and playing you will learn things are not so categoric and to tell personal likings from technique.

@ElvisStillRules Recommending just a fistful of songs will not honour Rea at all. But listening to 1989-1993 albums (just four) plus the 2006 live double album should give you a fleeting glimpse of his powerful sliding. You shouldn't miss the post-2002 blues albums anyways.
@heeyyitssceelliiinn
@heeyyitssceelliiinn 2 года назад
I agree with you on his 1989-1993 albums, however, Chris Rea’s 1998 album The Blue Cafe has some amazing songs on it as well like shadows of the big man, the blue cafe, where do we go from here and more. What do you think about The Blue Cafe album?
@Fenderado
@Fenderado 2 года назад
@@heeyyitssceelliiinn You're completely right I missed that one. In fact TBC is one of Rea's albums I listen to most. I will also add The Blue Jukebox.
@Fenderado
@Fenderado 13 лет назад
@Nakke144 Believe me: tabs are not match for your ears, they are often pretty unnaccurate if not wrong and almost useless for slide playing as this technique relies more on feeling and nuances than on spot-on notes (Rea calls it "curling"). As for Soft Top, IMHO I think Rea got wrong with it as it is a too much "knopflerized" song. In fact I tend to think of it as a stripped-down Sultans Of Swing version to three chords: Dm, Bb, C.
