NIU's win wasn't a fluke. They had more total yards, more passing yards, more rushing yards, fewer turnovers. They were simply better than nd. But don't worry Notre Dame, with your pitiful schedule, you'll probably end up with two losses and still get in the playoffs because that's what CFB wants.

This is what happens when you don’t have a true qb competition and just hand the keys to a guy you gave way too much nil money and isn’t that good. The first game I gave him the benefit of the doubt and thought it was just A&M’s good defense but today proved that wrong. Leonard should be benched because any of the other qb’s on this team could do just as good and I honestly think they’d do a helluva lot better

If Steve Angeli is not the starter next week I'm done with this team and Marcus Freeman. Shocked Riley came out after halftime as the starter. Football is rigged you can't tell me it's not. Some of the offensive calls are insane. No way you can't tell me it's not. It's all about the betting line and money.

From day one I’ve been saying that bringing in RL as the starter was a mistake. He is an amazing role model, and a very good athlete, but he just doesn’t throw well enough in games, and doesn’t read defenses well enough to be the guy at ND. Steve Angeli needs to start next week because he is an infinitely better passer, he can run nearly as well as Leonard, and because to make the playoffs after today ND not only has to run the table, but they need to make a statement nearly every week. Maybe Angeli can do that, and maybe he can’t, but after two games it is clear that Leonard is not that guy. Additionally, with ND’s playoff chances taking such a hit, it’s a perfect time to give Angeli the experience everyone was previously saying he doesn’t have. He has another year of eligibility remaining, and at least for now ND has Knight, and hopefully still has another stud coming in next year. With a season under his belt, along with two other great options, ND’s future could still be very bright.

It's not getting off the field and giving up big plays that led to points. This was a loss in every phase, including the D! No sacks, TOs, etc. NIU ate up the clock, too.

NIU played single high 90% of its defense because there isn’t an ounce of threat down field….same defense that beat Pine against Marshal

It’s time to pull the plug on the Riley Leonard experiment. In order for ND to make the playoffs, they will have to run the table, and will need to do it with a lot of blowouts. Steve Angeli is a far more versatile QB. He can accurately make all of the throws, and he can run nearly as well as Leonard. He also reads defenses well. Additionally, the previous knock on Steve was that he didn’t have experience. With Notre Dame‘s playoff chances being far less likely after today, this is the perfect chance to give him that experience. Leonard is in his final year of eligibility, but Angeli will be back for another season. Also, Notre Dame has Deuce Knight, and they have another stud coming in next year. A season of experience for Angeli going into next season, combined with two other potentially great options, could put ND exactly where they need to be at QB.

He can continue with his ridiculous attempt to win with a transfer QB who doesn’t throw well, or he can decide to start developing the other three QB’s in the room, which he should have been doing all along, and all three being better at passing than Leonard. Time will tell.

been a fan of the irish since 06'(born in 00). This was the worst lost in my lifetime. We played below our competition and we didn't seem to care. Freeman needs to find an identity for this team fast, because if doesn't he'll be looking for a new job. This team is ambitionless and severely lacks an identity. What is our bread and butter? how can we use it against 95% of our opponents? These are the questions that have to be answered if we are going to make it back to college football prominence.

The defense did fine. They held a team to 13 points for 59:30. Usually that's enough to beat teams. The offense (qb) couldn't run a 10 yard play.

ive been begging for angelli to start and play since before last season begun. ND went to the portal and got hartman. hartman played well but eventually angelli started the bowl and played terrific. was excited for angelli to start and play this season. ND went to the portal and got leonard. now look at where ND is? how do you think angelli feels being passed over twice? he would start at 99% of other schools and ND didnt/doesnt want to invest the resources and time to develop him. and everyone is calling for him to take over now...behind that offensive line? i would not be surprised if angelli enters the portal himself this year to go to a team that wants to have him do more than ride the bench for the past 3 seasons. even tho i think leonard is a better runner than angelli so he needs to be under center because he has to be able to run for his life behind that o-line. but leonard is not the answer. denbrock is not the answer. freeman is not the answer. sorry for the long rant but ND football is my 1st true love and it pains me to see this happen. ive seen this re-run before. this team is better than this. easily one of the worst losses in the history of this university.

I agree with the host. The game at Purdue is not a guarantee either. I would say every game on their season will now be a tough game. If Northern Illinois won at South Bend, I think every opponent on their schedule is now saying we can beat Notre Dame too. So much for any psychological intimidation you might have had against the other opponents. This home loss to Northern Illinois is bad on many levels.
