A chance to see Nottingham as it was at the start of Christmas 1990. Have a walk through the Broad Marsh and Victoria Shopping Centres and along the streets in between.
Great upload Jess. Many wonderful memories as a child when Nottingham city centre was somewhere you'd look forward to go. Broadmarsh was actually brilliant at that time compared to the garbage it is now! Victoria centres water fountain/clock and lower level toilets are hugely missed! Lol. That same attraction isn't there no more, like all the spirit of Nottingham has been sucked out of it. Even most of the good shops have closed down too.. 😥. Proud to witness Nottingham in the 90s as a child.. Thanks xx
This is fantastic. Thankyou for the lovely reminiscent tour of my home city. I remember going in Vic centre to the Sweater Shop near the clock. I passed my driving test in 91 so could drive and shop. Oh wow so many memories. Broad Marsh looked great decked out with xmas garlands. They really made the effort. Life is far too fast and automated now. I miss the shopping trips of my childhood with my mum.
Brilliant! Thanks for posting this. The last shot of the bridge across upper Parliament street lit up is something I sorely miss. It was the first indication of Christmas you saw coming into town on the bus. Classic!
Thankyou Jess I am delighted to discover that I star in your video at around 5.15-5.16 walking along a street I use to love so much. especially the token house! How random that you were there at that specific moment in time. I also featured (by surprise) on an earlier xmas video done by someone in 1985 in front of the town hall lions at around 2.47. Both yours and the other cameraman's footage is priceless to me not just cos i'm in the video but because they have the real power to transport me for a moment or two....just a moment or two....to a lovely prosperous nottingham....the queen of the midlands as she once was. Thankyou for taking the time to do what other people did not have time or inclination to do
1990 was regrettably my last Christmas in Nottingham. I'm sad to know the Emmet Water Clock was later moved from Victoria Centre [I lived in a flat there for a number of years]. I can say with confidence that Nottingham certainly outstripped anything I've seen in Manchester in the way of Christmas decorations. They have a Faire here but nothing like the show of decorations. Thanks a lot for this nostalgic look back to my old stamping ground!
Thanks for that John. If memory serves Emmet designed that one specifically for the Victoria Centre. He also designed a different one for an arcade in Leeds but I definitely preferred the Nottingham one so it's good news it's still there and presumably in good working order.
Love the sarcasm about the clock 🤣 Really annoyed me when not only did they move it they changed the look of it too. Used to love the market when there were two floors. I remember the old Co-op at Christmas when they used to have a massive themed walkthrough before seeing Santa.
I was 14 years old in this video , i spotted myself at 11.33 its a few second sighting in an adidas red white and blue tracky top , i love nottingham then , now its just so full of violence.
That was really interesting to watch. I was 20 in 1990. I've lived here all my life. The difference is amazing and rather quite sad. Intu have ruined both Nottingham shopping centres. The 1990 designs of the centres looks dated now, but at least they had some style for the time. Intu in 2019 is just white walls and bright yellow panels. Drab. Uninteresting. The sooner Intu go bust the better. Then a company that understands the needs of its customers may take over.
@Steve Smith I grew up in Nottingham and I'm just a couple of years younger than you. I emigrated a few days after this was filmed and I haven't returned. I like to remember it this way as no doubt it'd be somewhat heartbreaking to see the new changes. I got a leg-and-wing into one of the slab square fountains as a send off, just as well, seeing pics of what it looks like now, it's a bit of a monstrosity. Hopefully there's some of the old character remaining as I loved growing up there.
Loved the vid, happy days, went to Nottingham Easter Sunday, was so sad to see the Broadmarsh as a pile of rubble, used to go in the co-op restaurant in the mid 70s and enjoy the biggest slice of delicious cheesecake for just 25p, must admit we discovered Meadowhall that year and it became our destination of choice right through to 2015 when I lost my wife, but still like Nottingham!
4:20 I have always wondered what was being shown on those television screens (with the exception of the one that is obviously showing the shoppers walking by outside of course). Perhaps we can put a date and time to that as to when this was taken? We can see the word "Ballet" on screen, so perhaps it was a quiz show or a sports programme - and I assume that the man that we can see was famous? TV shops and places like Argos were usually tuned to BBC 1 when the sets were on display.
GeorgeASFTHM I'm going for Monday 3rd December given that it's 4:15 and nearly dark, I'd say it's 20 mins after sunset ...also it's very quiet in town so deffo not a weekend
@@LA90598 My diary tells me I filmed this on Thursday 22nd November 1990. I keft work an hour early at 4.00pm and walked from High Pavement down into town to catch the lights before it got dark. Video cameras then (this was filmed on standard 8) were best at dusk rather than very dark.None of them were good in low light.I wonder whether I might also have filmed the early part on my way into work in the morning to avoid the crowds.
Why they moved the clock to where it is now in victoria centre will never make sense to me.....and broadmarsh back then was amazing its a complete shithole now. The whole of the city centre is to be fair.
Makes me sad watching this. Nottingham city centre is awful now. There aren’t many good shops left and INTU who now own Victoria Centre and Broadmarsh have gone into administration 😔
Nottingham was a great city once its now a cesspit - I try not to go anymore, but i did last week and how its changed for the worse, Filthy , floors covered in chewing gum the people look grim fat and was shocked at the number of non English people i saw. Vic centre one Christmas tree near John Lewis nothing else just so unwelcoming, i just hope i never have to go in the city again, its a millions miles from the city i grew up in 40-50 years ago
@Paul Simpson As the great Frankie Boyle once said, "One problem with Britain is that everybody over about 55 sort of thinks that they fought in World War II". This attitude stinks, and is being passed on to still younger generations. We've got people in their 30s feeling aggrieved that we no longer have an empire that they never grew up with. Meatheads.
