Filmed by Malcolm Wrigley in 1991, this video shows some of the freight action going on around the coalmining area of Shirebrook, and near the town of Retford. Listen out for some great sounds from a pair of 20's struggling with a coal train.

Brilliant! Memories of working with MGR’s at Fiddlers & Silverdale. BR thrashed those ”Choppers”, still going though, just a few, testament to that great British company English Electric, sadly no more.

Worked at Shirebrook as a guard in the 70s good times, Even in the slurry and rain in Clipstone loaded sidings!

Some great footage. I used to maintain the signalling on this area. Up to 100 coal trains I’d see in a single shift. Nothing now.

Great stuff and memories, thanks. I remember going all the way from Sevenoaks, Kent to spend the day spottin MGR traffic at Retford, only for there to of been a 4.5 hour power failure at Worksop, by which time it was getting dark by the time the back-logged onslaught started lol! I wasn't too happy eh hehe. . . At least i can look back and say, having had the honour of a loco-driver for a girlfriend briefly, many years later, made up for that! And all the other bad days out in 25 years of spottin! :D

You are right there my friend, they were a very capable little Engine. Here in Liverpool, we used to have Four of them on the 45 sets of HAA`S out of the docks, up the steep incline of The Bootle Branch, they used to make some sweet Music. At Night, you could hear them miles away.

We’ve all grown use to the sight of 20s on our railways, still, but when you think about it they are a bit like birds being the descendants of dinosaurs! All the other similarly designed pilot scheme locos had gone by the 70s, often only having a life span in the tens of months. They were unlike any other loco on the network with their archaic body design (single cab), low power, etc., but their usefulness was unparalleled, especially in pairs.
