I loved making these! I've experimented and kept the padding in place to make a more substantial case. I carefully undid the thread that holds the tie together up to about the last fold and secured it. That then lets you open out the fabric to the right width and sew down the (folded up) sides. I secured the end of the padding with a few stitches (or you could zig zag, it wont be seen). Really pleased with the result!
I like this idea. I feel like I'm missing a step though. You put a pin in to hold the two sides together but you didn't address taking the pin out. Thank you for clarifying.

I`ve checked through it and the instructions are much more detailed there and also available to print off. I found this project very rewarding as there are some fabulous tie fabrics and it`s such a shame for them to go unused🙂I hope this helps!
