It's a common noun because it's a general concept. It's not a feeling. It's a natural phenomenon. Like storm, rain, morning all the natural happening. These are all not the feelings so not abstract nouns.
There are few ways to check Abstract Noun. 1. It must be a feeling or quality: Ex: I want to remove darkness of my heart. 2. When we are in the state of something, that becomes Abstract Noun 3. If darkness is not Abstract Noun then is it adjective or common noun? No “dark” is adjective and it’s not even common noun which is found in number. All three ways tell us that it’s Abstract Noun. You might be thinking that u can watch darkness with your eyes but you can only watch black colour which is making you feel that darkness is approaching. Hope it helped. Please ask again if any more doubt.
