Nova is an “untethered VR motion simulator,” making virtual reality games and training programs feel more real by rotating in any direction.
The sphere, which has been compared to a “human-sized hamster ball,” is 5.9 feet in diameter, needing just a 6.5 square foot area. The whole thing weighs about 1,100 lbs, and can be transported on a pallet or forklift.
These units are too expensive for the home gaming market, the company leases each Nova unit with ongoing maintenance and upgrades, at a cost of $150,000 US Dollars per year.
Eight360 is working with defense forces, mining and forestry industries, where vehicles cost millions of dollars, accidents are a very big deal and training needs to encompass tilt angles.
There are also opportunities in remotely-controlled drone vehicles, from forestry tree-cutters to airborne drones, where being embodied inside the vehicle virtually, can confer big advantages, particularly where steep slopes are involved.
But there is some good news, Eight360 will be developing smaller cheaper units for the home market. But for now they are focusing on the core business of developing the bigger more expensive Nova unit.
Thanks for watching.

I've had the same idea for years too, just with a full gyroscope made of alumium for all-axis rotations. Better design to allow for up/down movement as it has a base to attach to and all motors can be built-in. Slightly more complicated than a simple ball, but allows for much more innovation. And the plexiglass does not have to be shaped as a perfect sphere, in fact it doesn't need it at all to function although it would be unsafe. I am recruiting volunteer partners to actually build it within the next couple of years. It's a curiosity project more than enything else. Initial cost cap is $ 5000, not even sure if it can be done with such a budget.

I used to work at a VRcade - we would project the VR views on the wall for folks without headsets to watch. Sometimes, they couldn't handle watching the projection while someone else played but then wouldn't have a problem in VR themselves. It can kind of be like being a passenger in a car while someone else drives erratically. Considering how this sphere seems to actually match what you see inside VR, I think the claim is accurate.

Though the price tag is rediculous... They plan to sell a service. THey should go into production in china. The mainreason why I have build it back then was to create a cheap simulator, inspired by the arrival VR. Production cost should be around 2-3k not more. i have a little addon idea maybe: if you use a AR HMD instead of a VR HMD, or a VR HMD with cameras on the front, and the inside of the sphere was a screen, then you could look through the glasses rendering the virtual world, and then see the next "real" virtual layer, a pre rendered or projecting like the sky with clouds and or the outer perimeter (less level of detail needed for the skybox maybe possibly live rendered by another machine) of a land mass allowing adding another true depth-like layer creating an even more immersive experience... perhaps in the future.

Looks like you'd have a ball with that... I like and want. Seems significantly simpler that your "usual" simulator though having a "Z" axis piston or scissor lift would add a small amount of "G" or "shock required for certain situations. The X & Y are a little less critical and could be provided with limited play pistons thrusting the base (so long as the ball doesn't oscillate out of the cradle).

Building something for yourself is way easier than building a product you expect to bring to market. Mainly because you will always be there to service and tweak the machine if need be. A customer is expecting a finished product that works out of the box without have to worry about upkeep and improvements. Therefor a product you expect to sell is going to have a much higher standard of quality than any home built project. You have to also consider that service is very time consuming and time is money. Combine all that with a very low production rate and things get very expensive very fast.

sure, but think about the safety hazards that building one yourself would have. if you built it and either got hurt or even died because of it then no one other than yourself can be held accountable. having one pre built by a company with a large amount of money means that if something were to happen to you while using it, their would be a potential money payout to your family if they chose to sue. bottom line is the company HAS TO make sure the product is safe and will not overlook anything while your typical backyard builder youtuber would miss something.

The electronics for the interface is probably the only expensive part in building this. And even that you probably will be able to get from China in a few years for $50. Btw, you can see skid marks on the wheel itself, so the method of turning the ball doesn't seem to be that sophisticated. I think you could definitely get this under $1k if you didn't have to pay an arm and a leg for the interface... not counting the cost of the headset and external computer/game software of course.

I remember when one extremely similar to this played at an arcade and traveled the world, was in Mobile for a week I waited 6 hours and only got to play 10 minutes and had to let someone else take my turn because my mother was ready to go home. I was only 8 years old at the time, it was a fighter pilot game similar to Ace Combat and it had screens instead of the VR headset. I think it's actually in on desplay somewhere now or got trashed and recycled. So many people got sick that day, including me but it was extremely fun and this makes me want this so bad, I could build one now, but it would still be expensive. I'm 24 now. I miss good old arcades, wish they'd make something like that again, so few of them left. But I love it when a simulation game has all the buttons and controls in it. XD

I like this tech, and even though you co-opted my question about hydraulic up an down actuators, I would think that this is a glaring omission. For example, the pictured off-road vehicle...Hitting bumps and pits would be so more realistic if it had such actuators.
@jedimindtrix2142
@jedimindtrix2142 2 года назад
That would probably make it even more prohibitively expensive than it already is. But yea...you are right. It would add much to the experience. I think that the feeling of acceleration and speed is one thing that just can't really be truly simulated. Every full immersion simulator i have ever tried, including flight simulators that can go upside down, has failed at impressing a feeling of forward momentum.

Motion sickness will still be an issue. Your vestibular system disagreeing with what your eyes are seeing is one of the main causes of motion sickness. Your vestibular system and your kinesthetic system work together to get a "feeling" of where your body is going. Just because you can roll around doesnt mean you can simulate the feeling of gravity in a turn for a car, or acceleration, or +/- G forces experienced in an airplane. Its a cool concept, but to say motion sickness wont be an issue is not a correct statement to make. - A flight instructor that teaches these things.
@sacr3
@sacr3 3 года назад
Eh, maybe. To feel "Acceleration" you need only tilt the ball up and leave it that way. Gravity pulling you down makes it feel like you're being "Accelerated" backwards. Same with breaking, just lean the ball forward and have people hang, similar to a breaking force. Turning you only need to rotate left/right to make you feel like you're being pulled to the left/right. Its fairly easy to simulate acceleration and deceleration, the one thats missing is vertical. So in a plane for example we can feel it "Rise" up, can't simulate that in a ball. They can't simulate "Falling" either. I can see issues, like having to rotate the ball to simulate a turn - the process of rotation if done quick will twist your body, which doesn't happen in a car. But I have yet to get sick in VR, or cars/boats/planes myself. I can't rotate in the real world so I use the game to rotate around, no problems. I'd definitely give this ball a shot. Brain may be understanding enough to work the forces out and not think its been poisoned.
@Ludvig_
@Ludvig_ 3 года назад
@@sacr3 Sure you can to some extent simulate acceleration and deceleration but breaking in a car at high speeds is nowhere near comparable to just leaning forward, same with fast acceleration from a standstill. To simulate turning instead of leaning the ball it would have to be attached to an arm that can spin the ball horizontally in either direction independently from its other movements, much like the machines made for g-force training for astronauts. I know this would make it much much larger but to accurately simulate these feelings is near impossible within that small package. Maybe this is the best we can achieve with a rig this size and well have to wait until we can "plug" ourselves into a computer to be able to make the "perfect" simulation. 😂
@sacr3
@sacr3 3 года назад
@@Ludvig_ lmao could you imagine the size of this thing if it took into account all the forces? Yikes I guess the best way to simulate that type of situation would be to wait another 30 years and then simply use neurolink to send false information to the body to make the brain think it feels the body being compressed. Till then we get the hamster ball of vomit.

@Karuiko
@Karuiko 3 года назад
A shake should be easy to achieve by rocking the ball back and forth. For being originally designed as a helicopter motion sim, it's pretty good, since helicopters don't like pulling strong G forces. But they really did outright dodge the question in the video.
@sacr3
@sacr3 3 года назад
@@Coecoo We can simulate up to 1G, if your car accelerates at 1G, all you have to do is rotate the ball so that your back is to the floor - you're now feeling 1G of force pushing you into the back of your seat. Same if you place your back facing the ceiling, you're now experiencing 1G of braking force. But more than that? Nope. Bumps in the road? Maybe a vibrating or thrusting machine to shake the ball, or your inside platform. Not a bad concept.
