Hi Lady Boule. Please pardon my lengthy post. But I feel it’s important to note. I remember when Lenny Kravitz lived in New Orleans. I was dating a musician and Lenny would often show up at gigs. The man is Black through and through. He would hang out with the Black crowd but as soon as his fans caught site of him, they would bombard their way all up in the man’s space. Another thing, Lenny Kravitz is definitely attracted to Black women. Not only mixed race sistahs but our deeply melanated women as well. For real. But the media often spins a misleading narrative once they’ve adopted one of ours as their own. One final point. Many black people like rock music too. When you love music, you can attach to several genres. Once at the New Orleans jazz festival they scheduled both Lenny Kravitz and India Irie to perform at the same time on sound stages opposite each other. The powers that be thought this was a good idea. In reality, bad, bad idea! Fans were really upset and conflicted due to having to run back and forth during performances to get to experience both. I remember being exhausted from runnin because I admire them both and so did thousands of other fans. Imma close this one out Lady B and thank you for allowing us to agree to (peacefully) disagree😊☮️✌🏾
Always loved Lenny Kravitz and his music. There are many black people who likes his genre of music. I don't care for rap that's degrading to black women and destroys the community. Kravitz is always welcomed at my table.

It kills me that too many black people don’t know that his style of music is black music long ago appropriated away so much so that black people today have no clue and no connection to it. Lenny Kravitz has always identified as Black. Yes, he acknowledges his parentage, but he has always been Black. His music never fit neatly into any category. His music is a blend of Rock and Soul which doesn’t fit into the modern definition of Rock. While he patterned his music after Rock, it was more in the spirit of Jimi Hendrix than Metallica, AC/DC, Def Leopard, Aerosmith, and the other musicians and bands in the “Rock” category. And many black people, self included, have followed Lenny for years.
@Wegivesp, black Jamaicans are descendants of chattel slavery. Black people in the western hemisphere are descended, for the most part, from slavery. African-Americans do not hold the sole license to this and never did.
I agree that there is no one way to be black however, I understand the other argument as well. I think the critique is more about how Lenny has remained silent on black issues as they have unfolded throughout his musical career.
@@JFoster310Kravitz has always identified as a Black man though and addressed the experiences that come with that. He’s never, not once, renounced his Blackness.

Many Black people have varied music taste. Black radio / awards should reflect that.
Lady Boule, I’ve been a Lenny fan for decades and Lenny has always embraced his black side. There’s not one way to be a black person. He followed his own dreams and it paid off. Lenny's career has definitely not flamed out. That's a misrepresentation. Greats like late Chuck Berry & Little Richard had huge white following, we never questioned their identity.
Lady Boule, respectfully, you are way off on this one. Lenny Kravitz has been down for the cause since day 1. His mother is a Black icon, Roxie Roker, and she is Bahamian. His father is Jewish. The reverence he holds for his Black mother is quite typical for Afro descendent men (who have their heads on straight). There is no question, IMHO, regarding Lenny's blackness. There is more than one way to be Black. In a world where a whole bunch of kinfolk run from their Blackness, we need to recognize and celebrate kinfolk that don't run from it. He been wearing his hair natural from day one, he domjnates Rock n Roll (which we Black folks created both the genre and the term). Just look at who showed up for his Hollywood Walk of Fame party, Denzel Washington, Verdine White (Earth Wind and Fire), Robert Townsend. Lady Boule, respectfully, I think you are showing your age and privilege on this take. Just because Lenny doesn't come from a traditional Southern Black Christian heritage doesn't make him less Black. Lenny is for the culture, and Lenny is the culture. You need to do more research. ☮️

Black people have abandoned our Rock and Roll roots. Black people invented Rock music. I don’t think most Black folks have any particular beef with Lenny Kravitz. I like him just fine as a musician and an actor, but he has never specifically courted a Black audience and what I have heard (no way to confirm it because I obviously don’t run in those circles) is that he and/or the people representing him have made conscious choices not to engage with Black media outlets, awards shows, etc. That’s his choice, and I understand that people try to court the majority because they think it will be more profitable, but you are not necessarily owed a seat at a table you have a history of rejecting offers to sit at. Either way she’s not ALL American like Lenny’s father. That was one of Lady Boule’s point when she said that. Lenny’s father is born, raised, & rooted in America for several generations.
@@judgejurylw1026 Part of her point is, that, Lenny mentioned Blacks letting him in (as in Africans who lived in America before and/or was brought here between the 1600-1800s) when his black side (meaning his mother) isn’t a black American. That it is Lenny’s white side that’s American, therefore why is he calling out Black Americans. There isn't only ONE Black experience. Black artistes do not have to sing only Gospel, R&B and Rap. Lenny has represented in the Rock music category. This is important because white washing has removed the memory of the original founders of Rock n Roll from the younger generations. The fault is not in Lenny if many in the Black community have blinders on when it comes to appreciating "other music" considered to be outside of the Black experience. Hmmm so many "divided and conquered" comments and so few "big picture" comments of human understanding. It's cool that Lenny is maintaining the legacy of "Sister Rosetta Tharp," the God Mother and originator of Rock and Roll. Easily researched.
I bought Lenny Kravitz's music and I have never thought he took sides he is just who he is. He's biracial what do you expect? He has a preference in women that's the only thing I see but he likes what he likes.
He’s the only person who kept himself from the table. His all white management team supported him in this endeavor. Hews don’t accept him that why. He needs to hire a diverse team if he wants a seat.
This is really what I think happened. Several Black journalists have admitted to being stonewalled by Lenny’s team. If they can even get through to talk with someone, it was always basically “we’re not interested in your outlet right now.” If he were willing to address that and not craft this narrative about Black folks hating on him or not welcoming him, I would be cool with that. Auntie got it wrong this time around...Lenny has never done or said anything off code....personally I'm a fan of his music....he has always played old school Soul/Rock n Roll...both Black/FBA genres of music...He was married to and has a child with Lisa Bonet...record companies and program directors decide what audiences get exposed to this or that act...not the artist themselves...
Exactly, they need to Please Leave Nurse John Alone, AKA Lenny Kravitz!!! Lenny Played Nurse John in the movie "Precious" and he played the role of a Male CNA Nurse in which he encouraged Precious to eat right. Remember "Precious" was a Black Movie with Mariah Carey, Monique and Gabrielle Sidibe in 2009, 15 years ago.......thats right 15 years ago Lenny was trying to reach out to Black people and connect. I bet many of you reading this post did not even know that he was "Nurse John" in the movie "Precious". I read all the comments and no one mentioned this. I remember the female comedian "Lunelle" saying in an interview that people dont know how much these celebrities handlers that are assigned to them keep them from the black community. These handlers dont allow a lot of Athletes to hang with old friends in the black communities. When I use to see these White People in Lenny Videos and no blacks I even said "No way this man chose and handpicked these people to be in his videos and no blacks". These comments are very hurtful for Lenny because I know he tried to connect with black people. This man married a Black Woman while on top of the White Rock and Roll scene. He could have easily married a non-black woman at the time because they were definitely throwing themselves at him. Have yall seen Lenny Kravitz home? Black Art everywhere.....and stunning at that. Lenny doesnt have a mixed kid.....ZOE has two Black Parents......he had some bad handlers in his career that in my opinion separated him from the black audience. I cant even think of a Black Rock and Role singer that was singing hard rock like Lenny and had a Black Wife. Even Jimmy Hendrix had absolutely nothing but White Women on his arm and in his bed. Lenny married Black while doing hard and I mean hard rock n roll in front of nothing but White People. Sorry yall got this wrong and very wrong
@@Carolyn-vh4nz the culturally conscious rap group Dead Prez spoke on how their label purposely had them touring outside the states or wouldn't book them at shows in majority Black/Fba cities when they did tour in the states...
@@youngw1ze yes i believe this and like i said go listen to the interview with Lunelle and she also said that her and Beyonce was friends for years and she said she saw Beyonce on the red carpret at one of those big events and she approached Beyonce to say hi and the handlers formed a wall and forced her to leave and turn around and even when Beyonce was trying to wave her through and tell them it was ok they still did not allow Lunelle to talk to her friend Beyonce. Aint that something? So a lot of these entertainers are not allowed to have access to black friends and the black community unless they take big risk on their careers. Notice Jimmy Hendrix was always pictured doing drugs drinking and smoking it up with other races not blacks. Do you really believe he chose that crowd? This is why so many black celebs go crazy because they are forced to be detached from their blackness.
The reason why Lenny Kravitz didn't have a lot of black fans, it's because there are not a lot of black people who love Rock music or Punk Rock. Most black youths are not Rockers or Punk Rockers, they are Hip-Hop and R&B fans.
That's is so not true! Especially if you grew up in the 90's ! Every Black American knows at least one Rock song verbatim! That goes for country music too!
@@MachilaWilson-ii3qm Yes, it's true. Most black youth are not Rockers or Punk Rock fans. Look at the way that the majority of us dress, we mostly dress in clothes that are based on the Hip-Hop or R&B culture and not the Punk Rock or Rocker culture. Our clothing also reflects the type of music genre that we listen to (mostly rap and R&B music).
@@MachilaWilson-ii3qm Knowing one rock song doesn't make you a fan. That's the difference. We don't buy tickets to rock concerts at the rate non-Black people buy tickets to rap concerts. With that, you can only gear your music towards those who are interested in what you do. Jimmy Hendrix's largest fan base wasn't Black.
@@everythingunderthesun7803 WRONG... "JIMI" Hendrix had a lot of Black fans. Jimi Hendrix and the Band of Gypsys Live at the Filmore East was a special concert for the Black-American community and the Black Civil Rights movement. This is where he played the legendary song MACHINE GUN.
@@TheOnIyGod This was back in the 1970s, and this doesn't happen frequently. Compare the number of black people who attend the Beyonce concert and the number of black people who show up at a Punk Rock show or a Rock concert, and you will see what I mean.
What I know is he has a new album, he speaks glowingly about his mother, and respects his mother's original homeland (Bahamas) and lives there partially. He's biracial and has no less respect for black women than a lot of FBA men. All they want are snowbunnies.
Stop lying on FBA Men 'cuz' snowbunnies show they natural born ass's to FBA black men snowbunnies throw themselves at FBA black men they have no [SHAME] --I've seen this myself I'm a FBA black woman--FOH!
Lisa is ALSO biracial. More importantly, their daughter has stated that she was not raised with knowledge of or respect for her Blackness. This is a reflection of her parents.
@@ChannelFiend Right. She has the same mix as her ex husband. She doesn’t identify as a bw even though she played a daughter in a Blck family sitcom. I believe it was one of the most popular shows in its’ time.
I agree with you most of the time , but isn't his baby mama Lisa Bonet and his daughter Black, Black music is the root of all music, like the banjo used in country music orgins is from Africa and Beyonce had every right to release that album ,rap and hip hop crossed over to every culture, race etc. worldwide. Music is a universal language and can create unity and a dialouge between people. Gary Clark Jr . is black a rock guitar genius sort of like Jimi Hendrix and opening for some of the Rolling Stone tour as did Billy Preston etc. Whats wrong with him wanting to be at a Black Table ? Kravitz's most commericial hits 'It Aint Over Till It's Over' is written and performed in a high falsetto 'soul style,'. One of the host on RU-vid did an in-depth feature on Lenny and his Mom and according to it Lennys father was abusive, growing up and from what I got out of it ,it wasn't like he worshipped his Dad cause he was white. Music is universal my Black parents and espiesslly Introduced us to Jazz, Broadway and Classical music on Sunday mornings but would still call across the states if anyone from Motown was on the Ed Sullivan show .and I grew up proud and educated of my culture. I would compare it to all the millionaire, celebrity Black men at the Black table who've come to the defense of a medicore WNBA star but thats petty , Ive made my point.
I can’t finish watching this. You are wayyy off the mark and don’t know anything about Lenny Kravitz. I followed him his entire career…we created Rock. This post is foolish
Lenny has always wanted a seat at the table. I feel he should have one. I don’t know how many times in different interviews, I have heard him have to claim and or put someone in check about his blackness. He supports the Harlem School of the Arts, and numerous charities that benefit black communities, like WhyHunger, the Elevate Hope Foundation founded by Sheila E, Artist against Racism, as well as others. He is not alone. There are many others like the black rockers Living Colour and Militia Vox and others, who had stated many times how they wished more black people would show up to their shows and how they wanted to be invited to the proverbial black table. They have championed black causes as well as working in the community, doing what they can to re-introduce this genre of music back into the black community from where it came to show that black people were not monolithic and were not restricted in music styles, tastes and choice because after all black people have a deep historical connection to all music genres, yet are hit with road blocks to acceptance. Look at Tina Turner, when she switched genres, how many black people showed up to her shows. Btw, to the many on this thread that keep referring to rock and roll and or rock music as not a black thing, please do the research. In fact Black people started it all from the plantations. It all came from the blues. Blues musical styles, forms, melodies, and scale have influenced the growth of genres of music, such as gospel, country, jazz, R&B (of course) and rock and roll (rock) and many of todays popular forms of music, like hip hop, etc. When people bring up rock and roll and black musicians they always name Hendrix and rightly so, however there we’re many way before Jimi. Too many to name, like Sister Rosetta Tharpe, who rocked that guitar in the 39s like no other. Even Elvis had to give her props.
Lenny is Bi-racial but has always identified as Black. Not sure what he has to do to be a part of the Black community, why do some consider him not to be? Is it because of the type of music he makes or is it because he won't be "boxed" in to someones narrow idea of what blackness is?
There are plenty of black rock venues for Lenny, such as AFRO Punk.. all he has to do is show up! I never saw him there and i like his music. He could have cultivated a more black fan base.
They seem to always think Black people forgive everybody, forget the past, and welcome them back regardless. All people think they can just walk over us and we continue to go on business as usual. Stop being doormats to everybody who wants to be with us. To other mixed people, just claiming Blackness and coming back anytime when the other side does not want you and to the very people you denigrated in the past without repercussions. Convenience is a cruel mistress that takes its due...Peace
I don't agree with this. It's funny how our people think it is our business to determine how black a black person is. We ostracize our own and do more harm than white folks. Our community rejected Jimi Hendrix. We turned away from the ones who were the foundation for American music because it was considered the Devil's music and it reminded us of our past. The Brits came along and fell in love with Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf and the others who struggled on the path to success, while we found the blues shameful. John Fogerty, a white artist paid for the tombstone for Charlie Patton. I believe it was Janis Joplin who paid homage to Big Mama Thornton, and provided a headstone for Bessie Smith. Lenny Kravitz deserves a seat at the table. Stop gatekeeping black folks, because it's unbecoming. Celebrate all who have contributed to the music that we invented.
Lady Boule , I have to disagree with you on this one. I have been a Lenny fan since his first album Let Love Rule. This man has a talent and style that was different from Hip Hop but still had value in the music industry. Part of the issue is black people tend to follow trends and basically abandoned anything that doesn’t fit the “popular” narrative. Every form of music in America was created by Black Artists! But we allow other cultures to take it and capitalize from it. Part of the reason black people weren’t “checking” for Lenny Kravits was because black folk was told by white music execs to listen to rap now. These white execs control radio air play. Lenny’s music and talent was good enough to be a moneymaker in the music industry, but black folk didn’t fit in to that equation. Lenny has never belittled or talked down about his blackness that I’ve heard. This man is a success in an industry that destroys so many people. I believe we should listen to what he has to say before we decide whether or not he has validity. Because we know when it comes down to it, if one parent is black, you black.
Yes, his issue has always been that he’s been excluded from Black spaces because of the musical genre that he plays. But he has always acknowledged the history and influence of Blacks in Rock music, and on himself, and paid homage to the original Black Rockers who created the genre. His challenge has always been towards the “gatekeepers” at the industry level, The BET Awards, etc. to see beyond the narrow stereotypical definitions of “Black Music” and include Blacks of all genres, include “nontraditional” ones like Rock and Country, etc.
@@candace2117OMG! You said it Sis! I love this comment because it is so accurate. I appreciate you pointing out how black talent from differing musical genres are excluded from “black spaces”. There are extremely talented black artists in every form of music.
@@Joyful_Smiles Prince’s first album was in the 1979 I believe. Black people were still respected for being musicians and instrumentalist. When hiphop became popular the only thing it seems people wanted to see you hold was guns, a mic, and your crotch. I’m also a Prince fan, but his prominence took a hit as hiphop was promoted as the dominant music genre. It’s hard to compare Prince, who was well established before Lenny Kravits ever released any music. Times had changed, but he still had an opportunity to create a pretty impressive musical career…

Madame .. I have truly been enjoying your commentary and videos. But before you speak on Mr. Kravitz, which I don’t know him I’ve only listened to his music watched his movies and his videos you may be mistaken. He is a black man. He may be mixed with a lot of people of native indigenous FB and African descent have European blood in them, but he is a black man and he is true to himself and his family roots. I am a FBA woman and in love with my heritage of Melanated blackness I don’t flip-flop and that’s what I appreciate about you but this is a little disturbing. Thank you for listening.
Lord have mercy….where is this coming from??? 🤷🏽♀️. Lenny Kravitz has ALWAYS EMBRACED HIS HERITAGE! If you have ever looked at his biography and his home tour, you would see one room of nothing but his MOTHER! A Picture as big as the room. Speaking of his mother only! He also speaks about eating healthy as a black person~. Lord have mercy what is this world coming too! People will do and say anything for this internet! And to bring Beyoncé into the same sentence as Lenny is a disgrace. Do you really know who she is? SMH!. ✊🏾🙏🏽✊🏾🙏🏽✊🏾🙏🏽
I don’t understand... Fact black people created rock and roll, jazz, R&B. People rock with what their best at... with him it’s rock &roll. Why are we living in a box? Black people, why are we dared to be different? I’m glad he claimed rock&roll. I’m glad I’m versatile when it comes to music. I would be so bored just listening to Aretha, Gladys Knight, Whitney. Because I loved Tina Turner most of all, and she reverted over to rock & roll in later years. Tina audience were mostly white. She didn’t turn her back on black but rock & roll suited her best as a performer and singer. Kraviz, Tina Turner, Micheal Jackson and Aretha. These people set the music standards over the world. What’s the beef about?
Sorry, I had to comment again. I’m so happy to see the many positive comments on LK. I’ll add too, I don’t recall it being reported that he reject …. you know what, all’s well. He created his lane without stepping on or insulting Black folks. I’m satisfied with that.
Roxy Rocker and her cousin Al aren't Jamaican, they're Bahamian. Having a black woman in your life immediately signals your connection to the community. Ok Lisa Bonet is the same as him, but Nicole Kidman? What Lady Boulevard is saying applies to Barak Obama, only marrying Michelle helped him seem more American black.
@@AliceArceneaux I don't mind that he hasn't done anything but he has definitely marketed himself as a universal type of man. He has avoided his blackness. He embraces his carib heritage so stick with that
I think he may be saying that he hopes his music can be appreciated rather than just the rap crap that is out there. He has never disparaged blacks. He is biracial. Stop creating smoke over nothing.

Stop telling black people they’re not black enough. Lenny writes and performs the type of music he likes, and we listen to the type of music we like. Many non-whites like his music and I am one of the few specks at his shows. I’m tired of black people telling other black people that we try to talk white which is ridiculous, or tells us we’re trying to be white if we straighten our hair. He is biracial and identifies as such. Who cares? Stop being so critical of people. Nobody’s complaining about Justin Timberlake, Eminem, JLo singing “black” music. You don’t know if he has a seat at the Jewish table or not. Try walking a mile in his shoes.
I think this is the classic case of the tragic mulatto. Lenny has always embraced both identities, but he always gave praise to his black mother. One thing black people, across the diaspora, have to understand is that just because a mixed person gives praise to their black parent, that doesn't necessarily mean they are praising black people as a whole. The part where you tried to insinuate that Lenny removed himself from black people by doing rock music, I disagree with you. Rock music always had a strong foundation in black America; it was white washed. And maybe Lenny preferred and gravitated towards rock music. I loved listening to his music as a kid in the 90s and early 2000s.
