Let’s question what role the ego plays in our eating habits. If we can step back, and have a closer look at our bodies, and see if they compare with any other species of animal in nature. The other species do not have an ego, and they have a species specific diet. Which means all Lions eat mainly animal flesh, and all Cows eat mainly grass. Because these animals do not have an ego, we do not see situations where a Lion decides to become a vegetarian, and a Cow decides to be a flesh eater! What would happen if we remain present, let go of what the ego desires to eat, and have a look at nature, and see if humans are like any other animals? We could see that humans are similar to Bonobo monkeys, in the digestive tract, and teeth, fingers, etc, these animals eat mainly fruits. The ego becomes at its most defensive when it comes to diet. It will invent stories that it feels amazing on certain diets, to justify its actions. The ego will use isolated nutrients to defend itself, and attack other diets, and make judgements about how people look. The ego will say that we need to cook food, and say that cooking has developed humanity over the longer term. But when we let the ego go, and remain present, as if we are another animal in nature, we can see that we that we are in a body that is adapted for simple raw fruits, vegetables, and salads, and whatever insects we could find. A human species specific diet. The present moment is so profound, unfathomable. Yet simple, like nature.
