Now some safer USB chargers

Dangerous USB (phone) chargers are getting better. Analyzing two donated chargers, both of them turn out to be acceptable. The quality and safety is definitely much better than the typical cheap Chinese chargers (no name / fakes / clones) that you see in my endless "Dangerous USB chargers" series. In this pair, the risk of electric shock, fire and EMI interference seems low enough.

Fun fact: the holes in the US plug are useless. The original idea was to use dimples to lock the plugs in the socket, and that design made it into the standard. The outlets with the dimples, however, haven't been used since.... I'm not even sure they were ever used. I have outlets from the 30s that don't have the dimples and the plug only came into common use in 1931.

A while ago I got a charger from the dollar tree here in the states to teardown. I expected a horror show but it used the same style transformer as the first one in this video and even used polymer capacitors. To me this really shows how much of a scam the 1$ chargers on ebay are if the dollar tree can manage a very well built charger for the same price
@simontay4851
@simontay4851 11 месяцев назад
I expect it costs more than $1 to manufacture but other cheap to make products probably subsidise the cost of this PSU.

I’ve used Dollar Tree 1-amp USB supplies a lot. They get slightly warm sometimes but otherwise seem at least adequate, even when they were $1.00 rather than the current $1.25. I think I once took one apart and didn’t notice anything glaringly bad, but I hadn’t the experience and knowledge I really needed to be sure.
@puckcat22679
@puckcat22679 11 месяцев назад
So, a large chain that has been around for a while like Dollar Tree actually can't afford to sell unsafe products. They'd get fined if they sold electrical equipment that doesn't meet standards, and they'd get sued if that equipment malfunctioned and caused a fire or killed someone. Where you need to watch out is stuff sold direct from China on eBay, stuff from Amazon Marketplace, or things sold at flea markets and such. But at a brick and mortar store? It's unlikely to be unsafely constructed.

I wouldn't tear that first transformer down, either. For traditional 5V chargers, I normally buy 2 units so that I can take one apart for inspection, but when I see that it looks well-built, I don't want to destroy the transformer and then drop both units into my collection of good chargers. Insulation on the secondary is a very good sign, regardless of winding quality, and real safety caps means that the item was probably intended to meet electrical standards for a domestic retailer. This is so rare that further destruction seems sinful. Buy more and save them in a drawer somewhere before the item or seller disappears!
@miragept
@miragept 11 месяцев назад
That first power supply even has series Y1 caps so in case 1 of them gets shorted safety is still kept, i guess that is what we get from a company that only does products for safety critical industries(in this case only medicine), i wonder how expensive that power supply is, wouldn't be surprised if it was something around 20-50€.

Medical-rated power supplies have to conform to strict isolation and reliability standards for the safety of both patients and medical staff. They are generaly (in the UK at least) a bit more expensive, but worth using for projects that will be left running for long periods....in my humble opinion! (Power supply safety standard IEC 60601-1)

Hopefully he can check some of the newer GaN adapters gallium nitride rather than the silicon FET adapters. Expensive and cheap ones, I wouldn’t mind donating some once get my new bench up in new place and go though boxes in about a week, or two as still setting up equipment and sorting stuff on off days. Notice no email contact information on main page, or Patreon page? I have the GW AC source and power meter and siglent electronic load to test them and found them to be a little more efficient, but also came across fakes that they claim using GaN but using a regular FET as tore a few apart already when notice efficiency was the same if not worst then some of the standard FET adapters tested over the years. So tore apart and sure enough no GaN. Definitely would be an interesting series if he did some GaN adapters. but do love his teardowns and dissection of transformers and etc.

I bought a few of them some years back, and discovered that internally the input and the output is only held together by the pressure applied by the casing.
