Yes, it’s true that it’s named due to the road being long and straight like a gun barrel. I’ve live here before the lake came in and that’s what my mother told me.

My Dad was raised in Payne Springs during 1920s&1930s. He always said that the road was named Gun Barrel Lane because the road was straight as a gun barrel. That you could shoot down the lane and not hit anything. Dad told me that he & his friends walked from Payne Springs to Mabank and back to go to the movie theater. For a dime you got in, plus buy a hamburger and a bottle of pop.

There are a lot of roads in Texas that are straight as a gun barrel. A story I found online sounds plausible There used to be a cranky guy who didn't like people traveling fast down his road kicking up dust, so he propped a shot gun out the window so that people driving by could see it and if you drove too fast, you might get some buck shot. Locals nicknamed the road gun barrel lane and it stuck. I drive by Rita's all the time. Looks like the social center of Gun Barrel.
I too heard the story of the angry old guy with the shotgun leaning out his window. Not100% sure, so I did not include this tale. I hope you enjoyed my video.
