THE ART OF ENGINE WORK is the next category we are releasing in the Brass Tacks & Hard Facts Series. In the first video of this category, Jeff Shupe reviews nozzle team positions and the responsibilities of the nozzle, back up, and door control firefighter positions. The principles of nozzle team discipline are critical to ensuring an aggressive and efficient attack as Jeff shows.

Nice job Jeff. Had the privilege of taking Engine Co Ops at FDIC in 2007 with you as an instructor.

Another VERY important job for the Door Control Position firefighter that was not mentioned: CONTROLLING the opening and closing of the door. Leaving the door wide open can, and will, introduce fresh air to a fast spreading fire that needs more oxygen to continue growing. This additional oxygen, or control of it, could be the deciding factor in a successful rescue or a tragedy for the victims and the firefighters attempting fire control and rescue. Renowned Fire Chief Ed Hartin said it best: When the door is opened the clock is ticking! HRR (heat release rate) will increase and the tenability within the fire compartment and adjacent spaces will quickly deteriorate unless water can be applied to control the fire. Keeping the door closed until ready to make entry delays starting the clock. Closing the door after entry (leaving room for passage of your hoseline) slows fire development and buys valuable time for search and rescue, controlling the fire environment, locating the fire, and achieving fire control.

A 3 man engine? Lame pressure.thoght the "backup man" backed up the nozzle man.

Surprised by this video. In my Department and many others, the second guy on the line should be directly behind the nozzle man backing him up. No way the guy on the tip should be going up those stairs alone. I'll pass on watch Elkhart Brass training videos from now on.

Probably the officer would fill that back-up man role. But that would depend on manpower of the first due company/truck. I've been out of the fire service too long. It sucks being 60.

What would that accomplish having someone immediately behind the nozzle man when these techniques allow the nozzle man to handle nozzle pressures by himself allowing the other members of the team to operate the TIC and place themselves at every turn to feed hose get your nose out of How IFSTA shows it and see some other ways of doing it
