India is gradually worsening. Becoming a banana Republic. Supreme court decisions are itself inconsistent and keep changing sides. The whole process is laughable and raises much concern over the future of India as a democracy.
IAS in India succumb to the increasing unconstitutional practices..common Man lacks objective outlook as they are submissive towards a party and a leader
BJP IS AN EVIL DISGUSTING HONRLESS PARTY. After NRC fiasco they are planning to stretch cut off to 1951! Remember partition happened in 1947 and people were still moving back and forth in the early 50s. @@timepickle8443 Role of the Supreme Court of IndiaEdit The process of detecting and expelling immigrants suffered from teething problems for a considerable amount of time. In fact, the first attempt of systematically detecting foreigners by updating the National Register in Assam was through a Pilot Project which was started in 2 circles (referred to as Tehsil in some states), one in Kamrup district and another in Barpeta district in the year 2010, which had to be aborted within 4 weeks amidst a huge law and order problem involving a mob attack on the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, Barpeta that resulted in police firing killing 4 persons.[19] For a long time, since the bitter experience in the pilot project, NRC update was considered almost an impossible task by the government agencies. However, the task was again finally taken up at the behest of the Supreme Court of India’s order in the year 2013 in regards to two writ petitions filed by Assam Public Works and Assam Sanmilita Mahasangha & Ors.[20]wherein the Supreme Court , headed by the bench of Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Rohintan Fali Nariman, mandated the Union Government and the State Government to complete the updation of NRC, in accordance with Citizenship Act, 1955 and Citizenship Rules, 2003,[21] in all parts of Assam. Pursuant to the directive of the apex Court, the Registrar General of India via its notification Number S.O. 3591 E dated 6 December 2013 notified commencing of NRC updation.[22][23]. Since then, the Supreme Court of India is closely monitoring the process and has been holding regular hearings on representations made to it by various interested parties & stake holders. To make the process of NRC update smooth, the Supreme Court in its order dated 21 July 2015 passed the following directions:
@@dilipthombre4806 And what are you trying to prove again? That the results came out and the Hindutvawadis did not like it so it's okay for then to play with the year cut off to try to save Bangladeshi Hindus and throwing out legitimate citizen Muslims? Is that it? Whatever you do so it fairly at least.
When you have goons running the government overriding the basic rights of common people, what you expect is violation of law and fundamental rights. Thank you Karan thapar and faizan Mustafa for discussing this issue. It's always sounds refreshing when some discuss the issues in light of Indian constitution.
@@vinsin328 in that case you should not eat cow Gobar and and drink peee...and we are staying in India because there were many Muslim freedom Fighters who fought for the freedom of you (dick head) and us.
@@ainqazi656 So how come 98.5% of Indian Muslims end up voting for partition. You were fighting for partition not freedom. What were your ancestors doing during Islamic Invasion? What are you doing to make India free from Islam? Who is forcing people to eat cow gobar and pee? Tell me the name of your grandfather who fought for freedom? Taquiyya.
What is happening in India? When democracy and rule of law is under attack across the world, and with authoritarianism on the rise, it is sad that the largest and most vibrant democracy is not being spared as well.😭
Val Brooks Religion is more important than democracy for majority of India ..majority of India voted under opium of religious influence.. and result will be more freaky !!

Our Court has made blunder on NRC due to influence and pressure of BJP Govt. Shows that court is also not free. The court is guilty, now who will save this country.
THANKS YOU BOTH OF YOU SIR VERY WELL EXPLAINS FOR NRC KINDLY SHOWN YOUR PROGRAM IN HINDI VERY HELPFUL FOR MAXIMUM INDIAN PEOPLE HOPE YOU SIR SHOWN YOU REG****
Thank you Karan Thapar and team The Wire for this. This is so informative. I would like to request you to have more such interviews with Prof. Mustafa on legal issues before India. He is exceptionally well when it comes to explaining the complex provisions of statutes in simple language.
Sir I m from Assam and I know how people r harrassed in the name of nrc. Assam is run by Ashu an student organisation . Supreme court is giving importance to what Ashu says. My father has provided land documents of West Bengal of 1957 n other documents before 1970 and I m also born in India in 1983. still our names r not there. Many indian citizens r excluded from nrc bcoz they r from other states.
Yes our case also similar... My father gave 1961s Land Document.. My mother gave 1967s Land document..but also we are out of NRC.. Just bcz we are Bengali...
These guys are talking so calmly and in a mature way. After watching 'The nation wants to know' and 'Namaste biskoot khao' guys on TV so many times , this interview feels like a meditation.
Timestamp 41:00 In fact there are 11 million illegal immigrants in Bangladesh. In 2012 India has got $3.7 billion remittance from Bangladesh becoming 5th largest contributor to Indian remittance. Enough to narrate whole story.
Appreciated Mr Karan Thappar! BJP and RSS team are Ruling India extremely unconstitutionally... Raise voice against their EVM manipulation also. Supreme Court also is not reliable now a days and we never expect a justice from SC in future ..!! Democracy destroyed by this BJP/RSS Ruling ... Any matter BJP violating the law...!
What a fantastic discussion. That debate on NRC was an eye opener. The main problem is our government is run by illiterate politicians and we have now created an army of such idiots.. God Save our Democracy.
INDIA cannot have illegal people inside. If Bangladeshi wants to join India, have a referendum in UN and make it India. But NO! Not a single illegal migrant should be allowed! Also, it's not about hindu or muslim. If these people want to come to India there's a legal process.
Yes they have have become very weak.Since they are worried, if they utter a word , some case will be filed against them. Shivkumar, Chindambaram, Raj Thackarey are classic examples.
Standing ovation for The Wire, Karan Thapar sir and Prof. Faizan Mustafa sir. Extraordinary discussion. I am speechless. Every one is on wrong side over NRC, including supreme court. Is there severe lack of experts of the constitution? Very disappointing to see that a matter of great concern is how poorly dealt with.
Karan Thapar is one of the best minds in India. Always brings out hot issues and asks factful questions without a bias towards color, cast, religion and any political party. Salute to you sir...keep up the great work.
5. Only argument which is valid is the 1987 cutoff date vs 1971 cutoff date. This was due to 1985 Assam Accord where 1971 date was accepted. So when citizenship act was amendment in 1987 then this issue should have been sorted.
2. Sarbananda Sonowal case 2005 which declares IMDT act as unconstitutional because burden of proof was on the people who declared someone as foreigner and not on the foreigner to prove he/she is an Indian citizen, where as it is opposite in rest of India and hence declared unconstitutional under article 14. This information is missing in the discussion while talking about Sonowal case.
So what can be done against this unconstitutional move. What can you do?? Nothing na? Whatever step this government takes becomes constitutional and no one can question it. Or go to jail or straight up
You are right. They do have decent power to change the constitution. And they will do it. That is how all nation states work, even kingship used to work. Difference is only time.
If dalai lama and many lakhs of Tibetan can be citizenship of India on persecution basis by Chinese, then why govt of India can't give citizenship to these people, among 19L, 5-10L may be Hindus. Then PM nehru ji rescuted Hindus persecuted in Bangladesh and Pakistan, and registered them as refugees. Now this registration card has not been accepted to prove that these Hindus came before the cut off year 1971. Even neutralization is not required to give them citizenship, because they alreday have been living here for decades and have families. Few members of a family is indian and other few of the same family is not citizen. How logical and scientific is this NRC?? BJP is playing with dirt, creating man-made crisis for own.
nrc is full of mistakes, should be rectified quickly, however saying that india should take them as citizens, is dumb, if you really wanna do so, take them to UP, bihar, kerala, maharashtra wherever you want, but not 1 single such citizen will be taken by the northeast, lets see how those states react,
That is against Indian constitution. Dalai lama and many lakhs of Tibetan do not have citizenship of India. Their lands Tibet gifted by Indian to China in 1954. India is a nation state so it is logical from that point of view. NRC passed by congress not BJP.
In USA they do not give green card to illegal immigrants from maxico irrespective of length of stay in usa. Green card is given to people who add value to economy as well as length of legal stay not to who take away value from economy.
@@vinsin328 there is already a case against the validity of sec 6a under the citizenship act of 1955. But you know our judiciary. It is slower than a tortoise.
Justice hurried is justice buried also justice delayed is justice denied to indigenous people of Assam as well. I Need to read pre history & post history of Assam thoroughly.
Government should focus on building good schools, good hospitals, good employment opportunities. Nothing is important than economic prosperity of country.
Despite the likelihood of being a minority in this forum, would like to highlight that this interview illustrate the absolute case of biased ignorance. To amplify it is the attitude of 'i know it all' without even attempting to put NRC in the context of history and regionalism (read North East India). Being a proud North Eastern myself, the lackadaisical comments in this thread is devastating; it's another example of how the majority drown the voice of the others,so conveniently. Dispassionately, i see this approach very similar to how gau rakshaks heckle and lynch the ones without even attempting to put their views or explaination into context. It's funny how hypocrisy has swept public narrative-on one hand people critise the government when they abrogate a constitutional measure without involving the locals (read Kashmiri Muslims), simultaneously the same people (& media houses) build public narrative without involving the locals (read people of North East or Assam). If media house have some accountability why NOT involve representative of civil society from Assam to understand a 30 year old phenomenon called Assam Accord-the catalyst of NRC? Or its simply convenient to go with the flow(of the majority) and get someone to just prove a point (and fool the larger public)? No wonder,we have the kind of media houses and politicians that we often rant about. Looking at this case and the overwhelmingly one-sided comments,i have realised that we completely deserve such lackadaisical media houses and politicians. They probably just reflect us. Congratulations to all who is (perhaps unknowingly) contributing to this new India!
thank you for speaking the truth, all these media houses(wire, quint, print) are painting the picture of nrc in such a way that all the Muslims and bengalis of india are scared of it, Muslims think it is against them, bengalis think the vice versa, none of these portals are showing that indigenous people are being left out too!!the kochs bodos karbis are facing problems too. the bengalis and Muslims are now thinking that the assamese are xenophobic!! the indian media will never show the true picture of the North East,
