NRL vs. NFL: How can League break into the American market? 🤔 | NRL360 | Fox League 

I'm an american who fell into NRL from a random youtube video 6 years ago waking up from a nap. It quickly became my favorite sport and coming from Chicago i will now watch an NRL game over any local team. To explain to people here that its not rugby (union) or AFL but League is a different sport is mind numbing. I just call it NRL and tell them to youtube it. I wished more games a week were on FS1 or FS2. One game compared to AFL which has at least 3. In order to want americans to except NRL is to flood our televisions with it every chance you get. And bring us Matty Johns. Can only find it using dubious ways. See you in vegas. Flight leaves in 5 hours. 🎉

We will know it has been successful when the Americans start referring to NRL as Rugby League and not Rugby.

These people are truly delusional. Forget taking over the NFL in America, NRL is losing the war to AFL in Australia. Rugby League as a sport won’t survive if the Australian market is lost.

I'm American and I became obsessed with Rugby League in 1990 while living in Penrith. I went back last year for opening week plus round 2 and it was the greatest experience. Look at me with Nathan Cleary! I just touched down in Vegas and I've been waiting for this weekend for 34 years! Just tell everyone in the states soccer sucks, Rugby League is the real deal.

NRL is not in the USA to promote the game. It chose Las Vegas because it's the gambling capital, and Vlandys is looking to squeeze as much gambling potential out of this as possible, and encourage more Aussies to generate more gambling revenue for the NRL and entities like Fox that enjoy sucking money out of its viewing public.

Even if Rugby League can draw a remote amount of interest in America, the NRL will double its fanbase through this vision plan. America has 350M people. Australia 25M.

It'll never crack the American market, but there's no reason you can't play a round over there every year - similar to what the NFL does with the UK.

The NFL season starts in September and ends in February. That means that for the first half of the NRL season, it doesn't even have to compete with the NFL. The NRL could be NFL fans' off-season league. If a fraction of those fans can get into the NRL, even just for the NFL off-season, it would be a win for the NRL.

Don't focus on a professional Rugby League comp - focus on local amateur club rugby league. You're average American bloke is hungry for a contact sport they can play past High School. What Aussie don't understand is there is almost no opportunity to play contact sport past high school for your working class American. If you're not good enough to make college football and leave school to become a tradie, factory worker, truck driver etc - there is no opportunity to play football. I meet a bunch of guys playing rugby in Virginia and had the opportunity to ask why they played rugby. All of them said it was because they didn't make it to college but still loved to play contact sport. If Rugby League fosters an amateur community club model they will be doing something that American football doesn't, if they try and build a professional comp they will be competing against a giant. Rugby League has its roots in "working class" sport, they should play to their strengths and hit the gap!

They have no chance, the U.S has no interest in this game. Watch College football because more people watch that than league. Waste of time and money.

League won’t break into the American market. Can’t even break into Europe or South Africa where they already know the game. It’s only popular in Australia NZ and parts of England. International league is a joke and you think Americans are going to support club league.

It can't. This will be the same as every other niche Australian sport tries to "break into". We hype it up as being the next big thing but never close the deal. We love the Matildas right now, because they are winning. Wait until they aren't. Oh, and if this is combined with the Socceroos failing to qualify for a World Cup, soccer will be but a distant memory. Remember when V8 Supercars tried partnering with SPEED to promote Bathurst? Darrell Waltrip doing hot laps with OTT reactions? Prime time promotion? Not many in the US remember it and that's all that matters. Hell, even the F1 marketing machine struggled to break into the US market and the yearly budget for one of their top teams would easily power the whole of the NRL plus some. What a muppet Buzz is. Subjectively, NRL might be "a better game", but that's not what fans in the US, and more importantly, what the networks and corporate machines are looking for. McDonald's sells more burgers than Easey's in Collingwood. Doesn't mean they sell better burgers; they just represent a better option to fill a market gap. NRL will play 2 games in Vegas, pat themselves on the back, pack up and leave, and then not follow-up with anything substantial. 'Murricans will forget all about it within the week. It will be a success when these 2 games are reviewed in isolation, but it will be all for nought in the grand plan. And I haven't even mentioned issues with time zones and logistics involved with staging rounds in the USA. Give it up Peter. Put more into grass roots League instead of ramping up boofheads like Buzz and stroking your own ego.

Football is a cultural thing. It is the reason why people from Melbourne don't like NRL, people from Sydney don't like AFL, and people from New Zealand dont like either game. It is impossible to make the sport big in America. 😂

One thing will help is making sure the English Super League video ref's are nowhere near the game. It's not going to work if the US crowd is sitting there going, "Wait? You don't actually have to put the ball across the line to score? I thought forward passes were only in OUR football!?"

The game needs solidifying in it's domestic market before anything of substance can be won in the US

The NFL has left other domestic football leagues in its wake. Other leagues in the past have tried to create a attractive product to break into the NFL market fanbase with no success. USFL ,XFL and Arena Football have tried and failed. The newly formed UFL is endorsed by the NFL. It runs from March to July. American football is all year round just what the real fan wants .

With the major four leagues locked in and will never ever lose popularity and their spot with fans (till the end of time). Which means every other new & exciting sport introduced then if lucky with following and huge demand is given a pro-league competition in nth.america, it will forever be jousting for 5th spot currently held by MLS which in itself is a tall order to topple too with established history since '96, is a true global sport and has well known international superstars (messi,beckham,zlatan,henry.etc.)

I think the best goal for RL should be to take over union in union countries. League is a far better game and union countries need to be helped to understand it. Although in saying that, since neither league or union has a stronghold in USA, so its not a bad place to target. But an effort needs to be made to stop them referring to it as “rugby”. (Although, if “rugby” came to refer to RL in America that might have some advantages too)

Our competition is not the NFL, it’s to become an alternative for the US market when their footy season is over and to amplify Rugby League’s profile. Which at this stage will be the only way we can truly leap frog the AFL.

If the NRL really wants to make it work over here in the USA they need to do is get more games on TV and support youth clubs. Right now as an American I can watch more AFL, Six nations, British premier, and local union MLR (major league ruby) on TV and streaming. I only watch NRL because my dads from Kogarah and I loved going to Dragons games with my Nana. I will admit League is much more digestible and I personally prefer it but I can go watch a union game live (go hounds) and can easily find a club to meet up with people and play. but I have not found a single League club to see locally and only get one NRL game a week. To Americans I have shown League to they prefer it to Union but to play and watch live or on TV Union is by for more popular. There are million people registered to play union but they need to lean in and not just grab the gambling cash.

I love both sports the NRL and my beloved NFL are both GREAT. But I have to be honest the only way rugby league makes it in the US if they focus on the youth and we need to see it on TV more. Be more accessible to see. Focus more on the demographic here that is most athletic . If you focus on them and they enjoy the sport and love the sport the whole country will follow. We excel in every sport here in America football basketball baseball. If you Aussie just break into the Black community with rugby league when they understand the sport and they can make some MONEY from it YOU WILL HAVE THE WHOLE UNTIED STATES.

Rugby league has a lot of work to do to make it into the American market first they need them to stop calling it Rugby. If they want americans to get into league they have to move the weekend games to earlier timeslots. Or have the premier games kick off super saturday.

I think they should look into playing the world club challenge matches there in the future, or a short test series with some of the second tier countries like tonga and samoa, with a usa team
