NRM Let's Declutter Storage Closet  

“I don’t think she’ll mind, since she stopped being my friend a number of years ago” made me chuckle - I just got rid of a mug that someone gave me for Christmas two years ago, and had the exact same thought process. Sometimes these things come and go, and it’s easier to just get rid of it!

Tip: If you have a "Restore" thrift shop near you, they accept donated building materials, lumber, and used hardware, lighting fixtures, working washer/dryers, etc Their store is run by Habitat for Humanity. Lots of folks browse the store when renovating the house, but can't afford to buy everything new.

Wish I would have filmed the last 3.5 years of clearing my husband’s 900 sq ft office in our basement. 150 heavy boxes of paper, objects and mostly books. Reorganizing his genealogy tubs, office equipment, collections, etc. It’s been hard but I’m 90% done now. It’s a process! Your videos will inspire others, Tim. People are hungry for calm, organized spaces and you are modeling how to get there. Relationships and experiences are so much more valuable than our “stuff”!!

I think that when we get the urge to declutter on the outside its an indication of change and reshaped perceptions on the inside. The more I changed my perceptions/attitude/beliefs, the more I wanted to eliminate all the old stuff that was not "essential" (😊) or a representation of me anymore. New thinking, new reality. Your decluttering is a mirror to my decluttering, and its so satisfying watching change and new life take shape!

Start with Trash- just go thru the room with a black plastic bag and throw away any trash. That will decrease the overwhelm.

When I retired from school I was able to give most of my supplies, bulletin board items, etc. to a former student who was starting her teaching career. Win/Win! I did not want to bring all that stuff home!

Oh how I wish my parents had done at least a little of this when they retired. We are now working through this process for our boys even though retirement is a little way off.

As I watched this process, I couldn't help but think of the huge task I have ahead of me in my basement and garage. Thanks, Tim!

New Subscriber here. Tim, thank you for such an informative, real life, on-the-fly decluttering venture. We seniors have such a difficult time with this, especially when downsizing and/or moving. You motivated me to get rid of two bags of stuff today. I figured a little at a time is better than doing nothing. Don't forget to use the drop off recycling places for electronics and other things you can't donate or throw away.

Our local church accepted many things for their rummage sales when we were cleaning out my mother's apartment. My wife and I found many ways to reuse items through friends and community. I trashed very little.

Isn't it amazing how we can look at things we do not need/want for months or years, and then suddenly have them gone or dealt with in a matter of a few hours when we just get busy and do it? When that has happened to me I have questioned the reason for hesitating to just deal with it. For me, the honest answer is usually that the clutter unnecessarily occupied a space until I was willing to quit being lazy...LOL

Beware, this is going to be a lengthy comment. First, the fact that you started clearing out so much just like that is super inspiring. I have to clear up my current "office" space in my closed up patio to create an actual office/craft space and workout area. I began adding working as part of my lifestyle in January to manage my chronic pain - childhood back injury coupled with early arthritis and other injuries. Since I began being more active, my life and mentality have shifted so much. I 100% became one of those annoying people who spreads the gospel of an active lifestyle. If you ever feel like using it, I use BODi (the same company that was Beachbody, if you've ever heard of it). Full disclosure, I'm an affiliate, but working out truly changed my life for the better, so I cannot shut up about it. I don't really like gyms and I knew zero about working out properly (thus the injuries) but I began just moving along, no weights. I am so happy that I began. Some days I have zero motivation, but I just remember where I started and I don't ever want to go back to how truly defeated I felt. If you want to start, you can do it at any age and physical condition. It's the same as de-cluttering; creating new habits that become part of your lifestyle to make you happier. I love how you changed your workbench! I wonder if you've thought about creating legs that fold up along with it so they're not in the way? I've seen several types of foldable desks online. I would definitely love a video of you working on it! I have to check out your photography channel. That also reminds me, I think I would love to hear more about you as a person. Now that this channel has taken off, I'm sure others would, too. Thank you for posting another great and inspiring video, sir!

A few years ago when I downsized ,I filled old suitcases with small hygiene items… shampoo, conditioner, soap, new washcloths, new brush, comb and etc and donated to a Women’s Shelter in Camden ,Arkansas. In the past, I’ve worked with “ troubled” youth. There was always someone that needed a suitcase. There are places that take the old computers. The room looks good. Thanks for the update.

If that flooring is current, it might be an idea to keep at least some of it in case pieces of your floor ever need to be replaced (due to water damage or whatever). Thanks for showing us it can be done.

Check for electronic recycling in your area. In my area it's Best Buy.

So many of us have that exact blue metal drawer box full of unknown small screws and leftover project bits we did not know what else to do with. They must have quite the collection at goodwill lol

Do you have a building materials salvage store near you? They might like the box of flooring & little cabinet of fasteners. We also have something called Freecycle here online where we can post things to give away. I believe that it is national, so you may have one nearby. In our journey of getting rid of things, we have ended up matching many things to specific needs in the community....very gratifying giving an extra mattress to someone whose toddler now needs a "grown-up" bed!

The only areas that REALLY need decluttering for me are my quilting, knitting, & my walk in closet. I would've gotten it finished a long time ago but hubby had 2 knee replacements & i went through chemo & surgery this May. I never imagined my life this way, lol! But as I'm recuperating I'm picturing what I can purge, lol😊

Congratulations on your channel continuing to grow by leaps & bounds! I have a house that is totally packed to the brim (combining 3 households) and now it’s just me and the dogs. I am so overwhelmed by everything that I end up becoming stagnant. I’m thrilled you are making progress. Does having the channel motivate you more? Instead of tossing the shutters, open box of flooring, etc., check with the local habitat for humanity restore. They definitely welcome things of that nature. Goodwill also accepts that sort of thing. The shutter can be used by crafters. Everything has value, it just depends on your perspective. You are so cute to clean things for goodwill. I love seeing how cool stuff ends up being donated or thrown out. We all place different values on different things. I have been enjoying and learning to sell on eBay and so have been learning what random stuff people are willing to buy at good will or eBay. I have to say I appreciate your thoughtfulness to the buyers at goodwill. My kids and I have always enjoyed our time at second hand stores and we were just there yesterday. In my opinion, decluttering is a true inner war. When you are still a child, it comes easily; You are busy discovering the world, one object exchanges itself for another. But, once you are mature, emotionally & practical developed, the battle with things and belongings begins. Each thing holds a memory. And if it doesn't holds a memory, it's a thing you need. And if you don't need it right away, you may need it in the future. The list of "holding onto things" is endless. It's the eternal battle between the heart and the #pragmatic mind. (Personally, I think you can keep a lot, as long as you have the space for it. The art of preservation lies in organization. Rather have 3 well-ordered boxes full of good winter clothes stacked in the basement, than an overcrowded wardrobe in your bedroom. -Where you have to take a deepdive into your "socks collection" to find a matching pair, and as a bingo, the holes they carry smile at you, to spoil your mood. 🤣) Wishing you a wonderful weekend! 🎉💕

I have recently discovered Assistance League of America. All donations go to a worthy cause for kids and Moms. They have a thrift store and consignment shop for more valuable items like yours! They do all the work and you get a check for 60% of the sale. Its all run by volunteers. I will no longer give to the goodwill. Love your channel!

I started cleaning up and ridding tons of books, records, and old tax and bill files. I realized that alot of my things were just taking up space. I was pleased to get my own room back for music . It takes effort and time to go thru boxes, but it is worth it.

Wow, we asked, and you delivered! Thank you for the decluttering content we crave. I want to suggest that you keep those weights and maybe document yourself actually using them for some weeks/months and then showing us a nice video of your progress. Those videos are also very popular, and I believe I have yet to see one with a retired guy in it. Sorry if you addressed what you would do with the weights in this video... I'm only 4 minutes in! Pressing play again now..

Couple of thoughts. At my Goodwill,there isn’t any point in cleaning stuff up before donating because it gets warehoused and dusty gain after donation. Check your area for electronics donation places. We have a place called Reuseum that loves getting old stereo equipment and old computers. After you empty the kick boxing thing of water, put a gallon of water with 2 tablespoons of bleach. Ack in it, swish it around, empty again and donate. Some kid or adult would love love love to find one at Goodwill.

I’ve just begun the basement reorg (I’ve been staring at it all for months… years not knowing where to start) and by using your method it’s given me the will to face it all. Thank you.

If you haven't given the flooring away yet you will want to keep it in case (yes, "just in case" but hear me out) you need to replace boards--water damage, mold, breakage, etc. We *just* replaced boards in our house because of a clogged condenser line/leaking AC unit, and it would have been impossible to match if we had bought new.
