Here is a quick look at the new NRS Ninja Whitewater Kayaking PFD. I also took some time to compare the 2020 Ninja PFD to the old Ninja PFD and the NRS Zen rescue PFD.
The NRS Ninja is an extremely popular side-entry life vest that is made for whitewater, but is also an excellent pick for sailing. The low-profile shape allows freedom of movement, and comfort. The new 2020 Ninja improves upon the classic wedge shape PFD with a front clam-shell pocket that allows for convenient storage of equipment and of course your cell phone.

Thank you for this, it was so helpful. Websites don't seem to show the pockets, so this was great to see. Also comparing it to other ones.

Your reviews are very informative. I currently have the kokotat Maximus but I’m definitely going to pick up a ninja as well based on how much more freedom I see in the arm/shoulder area which appears to give a better range of motion when paddling.

That's super cool to hear, thanks Andrew! Don't be shocked if you fit it standing up and then realize it is all wrong when you are in a boat with a skirt on and have to start all over. I re-fit PFDs based on if I am rafting, kayaking, floating with a beer at the takeout.......

@@AlexBarham cool thanks ! The skirt is coming in on the 4th two days before my birthday! I bought the best drylander saw a few neg reviews but the way the person talked about it I feel like they didn't even own one 😂

It is not. I am not aware of any pfd that has a waterproof pocket. I imagine if it did the price would be outrageous.

Enjoyed the review. I do a lot of multi-day river canoeing and kayaking, camping on sandbars etc. Usually class I and II rivers. I was looking at the ninja as a PFD upgrade, but in your review, if I understand the term "creeking," it sounded like you might recommend the Zen for what i do. Do I have that right?

For you it would come down to the amount of flotation, and the size/amount of pocket storage. The Zen has much more of both

Hey, do you just leave your cell phone unprotected in the clam shell? If so any issues? Assume it is something like an IPhone 13 Pro?

Other than a waterproof case I don't do anything but toss it in a zip it closed.

I paddle for NRS. Before that I tried to try the Kokatat rescue vest they gave us to demo and I just said no at the put in. Think it is still hanging in the office brand new

Yes. It is coast guard rated and totally safe

I don't think anyone makes a clam shell big enough, but if you buy an NRS Zen there is an inner pocket it would fit in

My bad! The back is very simple. It is a thinner foam than the front with no pocket.

How long have you been with nrs?

I think I am going into my 6th season. In any case I won't be going anywhere any time soon. Everyone I have met that makes it happen behind the scenes at NRS has been wonderful to work with, and they have become my friends. Still a great company by paddlers for paddlers that's working to put out excellent gear that is affordable without sacrificing durability that I am proud to represent.

Everyone's path is different, but most will not lead to a sponsorship. Best thing you can do is get involved with your local community and help grow the sport.
