The first contingent of 120 NSW Police Force officers have left for New Zealand from Sydney International Airport this morning -- after a briefing at the Sydney Police Centre (SPC).

Based on a request from the New Zealand Police Force, another contingent of up to 80 officers may travel to Christchurch in two weeks' time, which would bring the NSW Police Force commitment to 200 officers.

The first NSW contingent is expected to arrive in Christchurch this afternoon.

They will be briefed by New Zealand Police officers, and then sworn in as Special Constables.

The group will begin duties on Saturday 26 February 26, as part of the NSW Police Response 'Operation Monro', undertaking the following duties:

• Proactive patrols;
• Traffic duties and management;
• General policing tasks;
• Community safety;
• Patrols of earthquake-affected areas;
• Support to Emergency Services.

NSW Police Commissioner, Andrew Scipione addressed the officers at the airport at 8am today.

Superintendent Max Mitchell, Commander of the Newcastle City Local Area Command, and his command team, will lead the NSW Police contingent.

Ten Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) officers will be accompanying Commander Mitchell and the police officers.

The officers have been deployed from the Central Metropolitan Region, as well as the Northern and Southern regions.
