NTS-1 Tutorial: How to sync with Pocket Operators!
Today we're going to be looking at how to sync our Korg NTS-1 with the Teenage Engineering Pocket Operators, or really any other device with a sync in/out connection.

Couldn't you also just run a 1/8th inch cable from NTS-1 Sync-Out into the PO-32, then use another 1/8th inch cable to run the PO-32 output into the NTS-1 Audio Input, then use SYNC Mode 2 (Sync in, Stereo Out) That way your NTS-1's effects rack will affect the PO-32's sound as well?

I have no NTS-1, but I've many a volca and other synths with an audio output and a sync output, so this information is invaluable, as I also love my pocket operators.

Great video and so instructional 👍🏻 I love how you look so energetic in your videos. The talking part is an important thing for RU-vid hehe. BTW! I forgot to mention that I ordered a NTS-1 too! When I knew about this small awesome thing a few days ago I felt in love with it. But it will take quite time to arrive as it is our of stock everywhere. Anyways, not in any hurry nowadays. Thank you. I realised you can do this without a splitter. Simply put thr clock into the left side with thr audio out into the in on nts1 then the audio out from the nts1 and voila. Same result no splitter. Thanx for the details on the pocket operator though and the inspo.

with Volcas it is sync mode 2 and you can use just a simple mono 3,5 jack, greetings

I think you can avoid the splitter if you set the first PO in the chain to either SY2 (if there are no others in the chain) or SY3 (if there are others). I found with the splitter and SY4/5, I could still faintly hear the click track in the output (maybe bad cables), but with SY2/3 (and no splitter), I don't.

You are correct, there are a couple other ways to sync them all together. The main point of this video was to show the simplest and easiest way so people could get jamming as soon as possible. I might do a follow-up video in the future explaining all the different ways!

I gonna have to give syncing them see what i can come up with i seldom use sync i usually just match the tempos on both devices but im having trouble with the Roland t8 and Yamaha DJx staying in tempo with each other i don't know if i can sync the djx as its not got sync im away to sync the p.o with the nts1 now hopefully it works.. edit i just did it it works

Amazing, I have never seen this documented anywhere and couldn't have possibly figured it out on my own. I really like my NTS-1, trying to figure out the PO-33 and decided I would hook up my favorite gadget to one that's really an enigma at this point for some "happy accidents". Have you played around with any of the user-developed oscillators for the NTS-1 yet? They're interesting, I think the NTS-1 has to be the best synth for newbies (like me), not too confusing and you can get some great sounds, for 100 USD.

Not if you are running the pocket operator straight into the monotron, and then the monotron into the laptop.

Great video series! Can the PO33 mute tracks? So that each “track” can be recorded separately into the DAW during song mode (pattern chain playback). #po33

Sadly, the PO-33 cannot mute tracks :( You could use the volume control feature to manually go in and change all the steps to "0," but that would take a while and still might not completely work. Thanks for watching!

About the Arp: Is there any way to trigger the NTS-1 ARP via MIDI? I use a Beatstep Pro to trigger the NTS-1 since the key strip is broken (so i can´t make any inputs on the NTS-1 itself). BUT: When i go into arp mode MIDI doesn´t trigger the notes anymore. the arp will not start. any suggestions?

If I wanted to just use the NTS-1 as an effects processor, would I need to put it in the end of the chain? Does it work in such a way that everything upstream of it would have the effects applied, and everything downstream of it would be receiving the already effected signal from the things before it in the chain? In my above hypothetical, anything downstream of the NTS-1 would have to rely on its own effects if i wanted to augment the sound further correct? Also, love you videos, really solid for getting me into this new hobby.

Hey, if i would want to control nts-1 using korg sq1 sequencer in this particular setup, would sq1 (sync out) to nts-1 sync in would work ?

If you want to actually control the NTS-1 you would have to use MIDI.

Does anyone know, if you take a Volca FM (or any other Volca for that matter) and do the midi out mod on it, can it send the sync out to a PO and have the PO in sync as it is in this video where the Volca would just be substituted for the NTS1 to provide the sync? 2nd - Does anyone know if there is a way to add midi out to the NTS1? 3rd - If the FM that was modded with midi out was acting as master, can the sync out from the FM connect to the sync in of the NTS1, and then sync out from NTS1 to the PO, should I expect it to all play nicely together? Would the NTS1 show the updated tempo if the tempo is adjusted on the Volca?

You mentioned it might be a good idea to buy 2 if you have 2 PO's .... could you use 2 PO's with one NTS? If not, couldn't I just use the one cable and 'share' ?

Yes, depending on how you want it set up, one splitter would work!

This is pretty cool. I want to try this by sending the "sync out" of my Minilogue xd into the PO. Looking at the Minilogue manual, it says just use a stereo mini cable. That means the sync going from the Minilogue to the pocket operator, but no audio. Is there any benefit of running the audio through the PO?

The only benefit is if you only want to have one cable for all of your audio. If you have a mixer or anything like that, go ahead and do the audio separately :) Thanks for watching!

Quick question. If you have that cable coming out of the NTS-1 headphone jack, how do you get the sound to your daw? Are you stuck using just the speaker? Maybe I missed something...

In this video, the output and sync are both running from the NTS-1 into the pocket operators input. Then you simply take the pocket operators output and run that to your audio interface, headphones, etc

New sub! Pretty cool. Admitting no familiarity with the Pocket Operators, it seems like you'd want to use this rig the other way to take advantage of the Korg's effects? Or am I just creating a "six of one, half dozen the other" kind of scenario? Bought an NTS-1 a couple days back and waiting on shipping. It seems I'll have a Pocket Operator before too long. 😁

Hi, why dont you sync the PO just from syncout from NTS-1 with a trs-cable and send PO out to NTS-1 Input? So you wont loose the stereo signal from the NTS-1 and could use the FX. Anyway, nice videos. 👍

Exactly my thought too... To do that you set the PO Tonic to sync mode SY2 for sync in > stereo out. Setting SY2 will listen for the click on both L and R channels so it doesn't matter which channel the click comes in on. If you want to chain multiple POs you set the first to SY3 (sync in > mono/sync out), the last one to SY4 (mono/sync in > stereo out), and all the ones in between to SY5 (mono/sync in > mono/sync out).

So just to verify. I would like to get an NTS1 as effects processor to use with my 3 PO's. I want the NTS1 only to apply effects to the first PO in the line up. I was thinking about doing it like this: - Split signal output from first PO to go into the NTS1 audio in and sync in. - Make the audio output and sync output on the NTS1 to go into a splitter to the second PO. (Or can i use a regular cable without a splitter in SY2 on the PO?) - Sync the third PO to the second with a regular cable. - Final output on the third PO. Would this work or would there be a better way of doing this?

@@andreash3906 That would work just fine! Things get a little complicated when you want the NTS-1 to only effect one PO out of a group, but your way is how I would handle it as well!
