Moments before a cargo ship struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, it lost power twice. A new NTSB report reveals about ten hours earlier, before leaving the Port of Baltimore, there were two other power failures on board. The NTSB is still working to determine if the initial power outages played a role in the ship losing power before crashing into the bridge.

That's not good. If they knew it had power issues, then why did they leave port? Hmm.
@stephenludlum9746
@stephenludlum9746 4 месяца назад
Because once they fix the issue, they can leave part. The first issue was caused by a damper being put in the wrong position; once the position is changed, the power generator runs fine. They don't know if these issues had anything to do with that final power issue. Ships always have problems when they are in port; when they get them fixed, they leave.

It is up to the Captain and the Chief Engineer with his engineering crew. There are huge pressures on crews to meet scheduled sailings.

@@agresseur7184 That is very true. Sometimes, it is just a simple fix, and everything works well afterward. One problem when the NTSB releases a new finding like this is that it means nothing; it doesn't put anything into context. Without the whole detailed report with the statement, it just means nothing and misleads people.

just listen to more elaborate, technical channels like @jeffostroff instead of sensationalist media. In short: the issue at port is unrelated (closed exhaust damper), happened during maintenance work, while only 1 of 4 generators was running

@@knowledgeworker2226 The air damper issue happened during maintenance when only one generator was running. It was not part of the problem with the crash.

Most of it sounds good but it’s an absolute breach of privacy for a federal agency to seize crew cellphones without court order or due process. There’s a constitutionally protected reasonable expectation of privacy associated with mobile devices and federal agency should stay out of it.

How do you know they didn't have warrants?
@RedDeerTC
@RedDeerTC 4 месяца назад
@@itsknotmagicuhh… Because this is not a criminal matter? At most, it’s a case of negligence, which is a tort, and not a crime. Also, both crimes and torts are state matters, so I’m not even sure why the federal government is sticking their noses where it doesn’t belong, again.

We don't know if they even took their private cell phones or if they are talking about the company cell phones. I don't trust what the media said to be accurate. It has been reported that all the company's cell and satellite phones have been taken, which would be much easier. Taking the crew's private cell phones might be harder unless they can prove some relationship to the accident when the crew members have nothing to do with the engineering or bridge crew.

people died.....this sounds like a standard investigation. Federal looked into train derailments too. We have a department of transportation for a reason. Federal definitely has oversight over international trade. Also, it would make sense since federal is paying for the entire bridge reconstruction.

@@franciswyvern in most accidents involving fatalities, the responsible party ultimately will only be liable for tortious negligence. Only gross negligence to the level of total indifference to the wellbeing of others rises to the level of criminal manslaughter, and from the publicly available fact pattern I don’t see criminal negligence here. The fact that the crew were confined to the ship and surrendered their phones this quickly also makes me suspect that they weren’t given the chance to seek proper counsel and were pressured into surrendering personal effects. Of course, if what they surrendered were company phones then things may be different.
