Part 6 of 6. A special project on Music and Song of Oriel, funded by The Arts Council of Ireland.
This is a lesser-spotted Oriel version of Tá 'na Lá, the popular Irish language drinking song. It was suggested to me by the eminent academic, singer and songwriter Pádraigín Ní Úallacháin after I contacted her during research for this project. The reel in C following the song, is from Scotland and known as Harris Dance or Ceapaval.
This recording was made at the beautiful Glòr Theatre in Ennis, specially for Celtic Colours Fesitval in Nova Scotia, and features some great musicians:
Tara Breen (fiddle)
Tony Byrne (guitar)
Siobhán Butler (feet)
Matt Purcell (sound and visual recording)
Oirialla, known in English as Oriel, is "an undefined cross border region, straddling two provinces of Ireland, extending from Carlingford on the east coast of the Cooley peninsula in County Louth, across south Armagh, through the south drumlins of Monaghan; north from the borders of County Down, south to the hinterlands of Drogheda." (from Padraigín Ní Uallacháin www.orielarts.com)

Visit www.celtic-colours.com to find out more about a truly unique and wonderful festival in Nova Scotia, Canada. I was artist in residence at the festival for 2020, alongside Troy MacGillivray and the festival commissioned several concert performances, such as the one above, from us. Thank you to Celtic Colours for keeping the spirit of the music alive during these dark times!
