It's not insanity. What you're neglecting is the military viewpoint. To the military sacrificing 3 men a jeep and a recoilless rifle is worth it to stop a platoon of tanks let alone a company of tanks. To expand a bit we had Green Berets stationed in parts of Europe with strategic atomic demolition munitions. They are smallish nukes and their job was to place them at choke points the russians would use and other infrastructure like bridges.

We weren't losing the space race, we were losing the Propaganda, not accomplishments. We were putting a man on the moon, the Russians were trying to put an egg timer in space......big difference.

yes you were when russians were putting all type of people and animals in space usa didn't have a rocket that didn't explode on launch and than usa put all resources on apollo program

@@chromewarnock9681 no silly, because we were aiming high, and as usual Russia was aiming for the low bar, that way they could achieve something. The reason you had less problems, because your rockets were only suppose to reach the top of the atmosphere.....ours were built to go to the moon and back. Our first man was days after yours because we had to go backwards to get down to your level. As just like today.....you have never had the quality, craftsmanship, technology or innovative creativity. You've always been following us. We've been to the moon 14, you haven't been once. Russia collapsed last time trying to keep up with us!

Ahh yes the Davy Crockett. Straight up telling the USSR (at the time) FAFO . Davy Crockett is famous in America lore for killing a bear.

There were also unguided air-to-air nuclear rockets for intercepting bomber fleets. It seems callous now, but one of the cold calculuses (calculii?) was that it was more efficient to use one nuclear device that dozens or hundreds of conventional dumb weapons. That's probably why development of "smart" weapons were important in that you no longer needed nukes for similar effect.

When nuclear weapons first were developed they didn't have the same negative connotation they do now. Many in the military just saw them as another weapon to use in wartime, Not a last resort option. It's only later in the cold war that they realize that such a war wouldn't be a fight it would just be annihilation.
