My grandfather lived in Nevada. One day he was playing outside and there was a big boom; a nuclear bomb was being tested somewhere nearby. He was young, and didn’t know that it was dangerous to be outside when this happened, so he didn’t go back inside. Fortunately, his mom/my great grandmother heard the loud noise and rushed outside and brought him in. My grandpa has skin problems to this day.

@@hughpenner5051 No it isn't! If the vapour is being carried away from where the matches are, they ae both very safe as lighting one and dropping it into the liquid gasoline will simply extinguish the match. Now if those same two men were stood in a room with a gas leak with matches, before one match had travelled the length of the sandpaper on the box they would be standing in the middle of a cloud of rapidly expanding gases and body parts! All it takes is one small spark and the explosion is fractions of a second behind it. Even the spark from the contacts of a light switch will do it, which is why you should NEVER switch on or off an electrical switch in a room if you smell gas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Historically, political reasons might also motivate, not so much the citizenry's well-being. My father, USMC, was on board the ship USS Curtiss av-4. He said it was the scariest thing he had ever seen. He has had numerous unexplained illnesses/cancers. Luckily he is still alive at 88 years old. As for the $75,000 to the Atomic Veteran’s, that only applies if you had certain cancers. And, the government makes if extremely difficult to prove. Also, since the testing was top secret, there are not that many records.

Met a guy who had been contaminated in a nuclear test in NV, I think it was the Baneberry incident. He was a cinematographer filming the test with an assistant when he said "the top blew off". He and his assistant drove 90 mph over the desert to get away but were enveloped in a radioactive cloud. For 2 years after everything he ate tasted like metal. He was still alive in 1977 but obviously wasn't in the best of shape. I suspect he and the assistant were the two men mentioned as eventually dying from the test.

The govt and the people conducting the test didn't give a sht about collateral damage , they were just interested in a really big and destructive explosion . so from that perspective it was a total success . If a few people had to die , tough sht . Anybody that messes around with such forces obviously has no concern for negative consequences . in fact that's the entire idea .

Just a while ago, the Eastern Europeans were all fighting and bickering with each other over control of oil pipes and Russia invading Ukraine's Osetia region/province/whatever, and World War 3 almost broke out, but no one had the balls to throw the first punch because of the Allied nations ready to fire nukes at Russia, and Russia having its own nukes also ready to fire, everyone chickens out over actually starting a nuclear war that could potentially ruin all of Europe, and meanwhile, Ukraine gets wrecked with civil war for not having their own nukes (to deter Russia) and neo-nazis taking over the government (who want to purge most of the native population for being ethnic Russians).

The atomic veterans were never compensated because their military records were intentionally destroyed. The fires at St. Louis were intentionally set. Lawyer: So what did you EXPECT the Government to do with the weapon of mass destruction you developed and gave to them? Scientist: Uh, study it?!? Lawyer: Yeah, right. For a brilliant scientist you sure are naively stupid.
