Hi friends, happy Thursday!
Welcome to the Dark History podcast. Did you ever consider that the baddest b*tch you know wouldn’t be anywhere without…the fall of Saigon? Turns out, this major historical moment has a LOT to do with the nail salons we spend so much time in today. But just how did these salons get their start? And at what cost do these salons keep us feeling cute? After this episode, I have a whole new level of respect for nail salons. Salute to you, nail techs!
I appreciate you for coming by, and tune in next week for more Dark History.

As a first generation Vietnamese American I literally started crying in some parts of the video. My mom has worked in nail salons ever since she stepped foot in America to help my father out with bills. My parents really did chase the American dream and in the end all it really meant for them is to raise us in a country where opportunity is open to us.

Fun fact: In 1954, a dentist named Fred Slack, used dental acrylic and dental tools to repair one of his own nails that he broke while at work. This gave him an idea to create an acrylic product formulated for nails, which he later patented with his brother Tom. Fred and Tom then started a business called Patti Nails. This is how acrylic nails got started.

Retired nail tech and it’s even darker than you think. There’s a huge problem of human trafficking within the industry. Recognizing it was part of the training at the school I went to. Licenses are issued for tech when we pass (in my state) a written and practical test on basic nail services and infection control. The skills taught on school are often very basic and only enough to pass the test. Salons must adhere to sanitation guidelines but, the choice of products is usually up to the management.

Can I ask you something personal in regards to Vietnam. My wife is from Vietnam from a town called lồng Khánh about a hour away from Saigon. My wife and most of her family just moved from Vietnam to the states about 15 years ago so very recent. My wife and her family still feel very attached to Vietnam and always miss it they love to go back atleast once a year. The reason why I tell you all this is because my wife mother side of her family mostly on my mother in law father side they moved to the states during the war and a lot of them really hate the country of Vietnam and always state they would never go back even to visit. I ask you does your family feel the same way by chance. I’m Mexican and I’ve been to Vietnam like 4 x and me my wife have two kids so for me I feel like it’s important for them to visit and be part of the Vietnamese culture and community similar to what they experience when they go Mexico with my family.
@hightunnel2723
@hightunnel2723 5 месяцев назад
@@anthonym6202 yes they obviously hate it for their own reasons. Reasons we may never understand but I do think it’s important for my own kids to visit. Culture and identity is being developed in a kids’ young stage of life. I would never tell a stranger what they should do but in your heart I think you know what the right answer is when it comes to your family. ♥️

I used to do my own acrylic nails back in the 80s and 90s. Then I switched back to playing stringed instruments, mainly focusing on the bass. I had to cut them very short as fingernails and bass strings equal Damage and Pain. I'm still focusing on the bass, I play with an orchestra now. So, still no nails, but I also paint. I plan on doing an 17th-18th century style paint job on my bass and painting tiny paintings on the beds of my short nails. I'll let you know how that turns out too! You are Wonderful, Bailey! When I was in cosmetology school, my teacher referred to Vietnamese nail salons as chop shops and warned us all to never go to them. We were told they used illegal stuff in their acrylic nail formulas to save money and that’s why they were so much cheaper. I know my acrylics never fell off when I got them done until I got them done from a non Vietnamese place. My acrylic set was completely gone after two weeks. A fill was definitely not going to be needed.

Nice nails are still a sign of class I feel like. For instance, I work in food service, which is still considered “lower” in many people’s eyes, & the actual law prevents me from having fake nails. I’m technically now even supposed to wear any polish. Also, because I work so much with the my hands I have a really hard time keeping my nails looking nice. When I see other people with gorgeous nails, it pretty much tells me they have jobs where washing dishes, extensive cleaning, scrubbing out ovens, & consistent dunking of their hands into sanitizer water is not required. Anyways. Just my thoughts. Hopefully someday I’ll be a part of the pretty nail crew!

I had no idea that Tippi Hendron started everything with nail technicians! Plus the facts about the Viet Nam war was enlightening. I came up during that time, and honestly, didn’t understand or care about what really happened. I’m not proud to say that, either. Thank you for all you do on this channel. Your research is extensive, and you turn it into something entertaining and fascinating. I come away from it knowing just a little more than I did before!

I never had my nails done when I was younger. I started getting them done in my twenties and loved it. I went back to school for massage and you can’t have acrylic nails on so I had to stop getting them done. I tried once or twice over the years to get them but they would just lift and peel. Last year I decided to teach myself how to do gel-x nails so I had control over the length and shape of them. It’s a long process for me but I see it as me time and it’s relaxing to do. I also love watching this channel thank you for coming up with this concept.
