I've said before in comments that I don't hear the things you identify as problems but I do hear how it sounds better when you make your changes BUT on this video man! I heard how terrible it sounded on the phone speaker instantly so maybe my ear is becoming more educated.
This is awesome, thanks! I do a lot of similar steps. 1. Get a rough mix on my stereo monitors. 2. Listen with headphones and whatever sounds not great, fix that. 3. Double check on monitors. 4. Turn on mono. If I use a lot of expanders or stereo width fx sometimes it sounds like trash in mono, so I'll fix it up. 5. Phone speaker. I know it's not meant for phone speakers but it has to sound decent on there too. 6. Car speaker. I'll still find problems when it gets to my car (usually too much bass). I also experiment by doing 2 or 3 different solutions when it gets toward the end of the process, like do I just EQ the sub 80Hz frequencies in the bass track down or turn the whole track down 1-2 dB? Whatever route starts sounding best is the one I'll explore. We have some overlap but you have more tools and are more precise than me haha.
In theory the "best" way to do it is how you're doing it - sending it out to different mediums and environments. It's just painfully time consuming, so using things like Master Plan and/or VSX is mainly a workflow helper.
@@WeissAdvice Yeah it looks amazing! It'd be a real time saver. Sounds like a must have for professionals. Thank god I have as long as I need to get my mix right before I release it since I just do my own thing!
Said it before and will say it: mastering is about optimising the final approved mix for your intended medium. That’s it. It’s not some radically transformative process where a country ballad turns into a black metal rocker. It’s making sure the inherent qualities work within the bounds of whatever you are using to listen to it.
Great video! I’ve got a question for you. I’m using DT880 with Sonarworks SoundID for translation checks (along with Genelecs 8020 + SubPac, also with SoundID). Have you ever compared any decent headphones using SoundID with the VSX system? Is there any reason why VSX might be better? I’d try them myself, but I’ve heard that when you activate their software you can’t return them. I would really appreciate your thoughts on that!
how about having the master plan in ur mix bus for monitoring purposes and then apply similar technic on specific instrument for a more detailed adjustment having to reduce the need to make alot of modifications during the mastering stage. just another suggestion havent tried it but i will definitely do.
So this video was actually shot as a follow up to a video I did for Produce Like A Pro's RU-vid channel... but the one I did for my channel came out first LOL. The video is on breaking rules, so I demonstrated a technique for using reverb on the entire mix, which is one of those dogmatic "no-nos".
