I like the main theme messages you've got going on about singing freely. Im realizing how true it is necessary to sing well. I went through a 6 month period recently where my voice went to crap because of prolonged distress due to a traumatic situation a year ago that I put on the back burner, but it caught up with me which the earliest symptoms I began experiencing tension in areas I didn't normally have tension: my throat, neck, tongue and jaw. But the big hitter came when my breathing started becoming very shallow and it caused me all sorts of issues like strain and my vocals began to crack all the time. I didn't know until shortly after that started happening and I saw a few doctors about it, that my body's stress response wasn't turning off. It was going 24/7, even in my sleep. When our stress response is triggered, our blood vessels constrict, and our breath which we typically breathe from the diaphragm, becomes constricted and from the chest instead. I couldn't take long deep breaths for the life of me. This loss of my singing voice made me start to reevaluate my life, and eventually it dawned on me how living in this era or time where we are bombarded with information overload and are constantly being stimulated thanks to technology at our fingertips, and it catches up with us if we don't intentionally decompress on a consistent bases. So after incorporating some meditation techniques along with silencing my phone for at least 10 hours out of my waking day, within a few weeks I noticed my breathing began shifting back into my diaphragm and the tension in my body began to release so I could relax my throat and jaw again. I actually do a 5-10 minute relaxation meditation before practicing where I'm scanning for all the tension in my body and relaxing all the muscles. Even our tongue can hold tension. Anyway, thank you for taking the time make these videos. I guess my point is, we all need to slow down or lay off of the constant stimuli in our environments.. This was perfect timing to run into your videos since you reiterate "letting go" and vocal freedom which are resonating with me more than ever right now! Thank you again for taking the time to make these videos. They are really helpful.

I'm not someone who even thinks to comment on RU-vid, this made such a difference that I had to thank you. As soon as I saw the animation and you explained, my throat opened up massively and instantly with practically no effort. Many of the videos on youtube use vague analogys and excercises... Without the understanding the physical mechanics they are like gibberish. Concise to the point and effective. 👌👌

Hey, thanks for the video! Just tried out a song I've been working on and really sort of focused on, or didn't focus on per se, that throat muscle. It seemed to just let go and sort of flow up into higher registers that I previously thought I had to apply a lot of pressure to get to. I think I get what you mean and experienced a sense of that floaty feeling you were talking about.. You almost have to just let go of the fear and then it comes. You can't apply too much pressure it seems like. Thanks again!

This is pretty accurate IME, a year ago I already had good range and pitch just from singing along to stuff, but my voice always sounded 'off' somehow, and constricted, so pretty much every bit of practise over the last year has been aimed at improving the stuff you talk about here. The funny thing is that when I listen to some recordings from way back a few of them are actually decent and released sounding, I was just unable to replicate them until recently after hundreds of hours of focused practise. I blame it on a lifetime habit of being very understated and I carried over a lot of constriction from my speaking voice (which has also improved a lot).

Yeah. If you only have power in your voice you only can show one thing and if you don't have much power but feeling in voice you can do much more because what is feeling.feeling is everything so you can show many things with voice and how you show feeling you show it with different levels of compression adjustment. Lot of Thanks to @carlwehden you are the only person i have seen who started teaching this. Lots of respect to you. Thank you Carl wehden The Great.

Thanks so much for this one, Carl. SO very helpful. I’m starting over after a 20 yr break. My biggest question is regarding the ratio of “understanding” as you mentioned here (the freedom, stretching, etc) vs. “confidence”... maybe I’m mistaken... I feel like I may sing with more of the freedom you mention in this video if I find my confidence again. I hope my question makes sense. Thanks again for all you do.

Hey Carl, I do not know if you already made a video, or not on the subject, but I seem to have this issue with lip rolls. My speaking voice is a lower register, bass/baritone, but in singing I can get up to a c7; however, in liprolls I fail to be able to bring them into whistle. Is that normal?

@justinbillings1112
@justinbillings1112 4 года назад
So this is what's going on and why I can hit those high notes naturally without force. I use to do be so bad but I discovered something about myself. I was able to feel the resonance of pitch in certain parts of my vocal cords of songs that were playing. Some of them in the roof of my mouth and in the back of my throat. I just let the note naturally go where it wants and bam! I hit g4 and c5. I am able to hit all the notes in my range now effortlessly. It's like my voice is moving by itself but all I am doing is throwing air into it. It's really hard to explain. When I get to the very top, I was light-headed a bit. It was a weird feeling so I quit. Was it the resonance of the note I was feeling? It was very weird. I also had some other strange things occur. My Tibetan singing bowl started to vibrate by itself when I hit g4. I discovered this by accident through presence/awareness of what was going on. Everything affects you and moves you. Everything vibrates at a frequency. If you just let it, you will achieve these results.

Exactly, there's actually no reason to stop it if you're singing because you love to sing and not just to be a star or something like that. The best part is you don't even need to be a "good" singer to enjoy it. You just need to accept that, it willl takes time and also dedication if you want to become better at it. Eventually, you'll figure your voice out and you'll be happy with it :)

Not sure you'll see this, brother, but I just want to say thank you. I'm a 37 year old beginner and this video was a real light bulb moment for me. The way you conceptualize singing in this video (freedom, having nothing blocking or constraining my voice, being open and vulnerable etc.) really clicked for me. I just play guitar and sing in my apartment and want to get better, and from this video I noticed a huge change in my singing voice. You unlocked another way for me to express myself, in a way. This is invaluable and really means the world to me. You don't have to take the time to make these videos, but you do. And it really is life enhancing stuff. Thank you so much; what you do is inspiring and makes the world a brighter place (which is a really big deal).

My tip...If you're a beginner, assess ur singing voice first...u will need strangers, dont include vocal coaches..they will always say it can be improve...if u see negative expressions...FORGET ABOUT IT...JUST DONT SING AGAIN...MONEY IS WASTED. DONT BELIEVE VOCAL LESSONS WILL MAKE UR SINGING BETTER...its all about ur money in their pockets...but if is applauded sincerely then put ur money in their pockets..simple

Yeah, horrible way of thinking. Awful. He doesn't get, that not everybody aims to become the next Mariah Carey or Michael Bublé. And there is no space for endless good singers on the market anyway. And that is just fine! If you enjoy it and you can afford it, do it! Don't listen to cancerous people like this guy... It can be a hobby like playing tennis or guitar. And would you really tell those people, "hey, your progress is shit , just quit!" He does indeed seem exactly like that kind of person.
