NuPhy's New Gem80 Is Pretty Neat

This is the Gem80 from NuPhy.. and I really like this? Disclaimer, NuPhy did let me keep this prototype and therefore sponsored the stream, but that does not affect my thoughts about the keyboard.

It checks a lot of boxes from me.
1. Fun design with the use of an alu top and PC bottom
2. A Great price
3. Feels good and can be tweaked with multipole mounting styles
4. Sounds fun and it's light weight
So some things I want to note before we dub this a W.
1. No PCB mounting stabilizers
2. No option for different PCB (only flex cut)
3. You NEED to have that silicone in to hold the battery
4. Switch gets in the way of the JST connector to plug it in
5. It's a slighter softer sound signature, but this is all preference.

Hey all! I know this is a bit of a longer cut video from the stream, but we covered a bunch of options the Gem80 offers and tried out a few different things. I will work on pacing in the future, but please keep in mind these are livestreams so they are best viewed live on my twitch channel.

interesting to see a dual mount board where gasket is seemingly louder than top mount, I would not have expected that!

Finally a budget wireless keyboard with support for stepped caps, also, plate mount stabs can be just as good as pcb mount if you tune them correctly

The stabs are indeed incredible here. At first I didn't pay attention and have assumed they're PCB-mounted considering how good they sounded during the test. Then compared to another review of Neo80 which has PCB-mounted stabs. Switched back and forth until I realized that Gem80 actually has plate-mounted stabs which sound better than Neo80 PCB-mounted stabs, with less rattle and other noises. Probably extra lubrication can fix this for Neo80 but so far I'm really scratching my head about which one I wish to buy.

the sheet is PET Film! works similarly to PE foam but its also made if recycled plastic water bottles if i remember correctly? Its made of the same material but dont quote me if im wrong

Yeah, mine won't charge out of the box, and frequently double-types keys. Already did one firmware flash, and it didn't help. Not sure what to do, probably gonna have to return this. Too bad, I liked the sound OOTB, and the lighting is fairly nice. (bttw, this double-strokedd like shown in this section of text inside the parentheses, it's rather annoying and a big reason why.. does this even on wired.)

I would like to learn more about that cloth square on the PCB. You suggested that it may be a poor implementation for grounding, but I am curious if this is really the case. If you have been communicating with Nuphy, perhaps you can ask them about this? They have an article on their site where they go into detail on the efforts they put into electronics and voltage protection for this board. They even have an image with labels for all the protection components and that cloth square is labeled as 'antistatic cotton' which suggest it is for electrostatic protection. I hate when things are poorly implemented, but I would like to know if this is a poor implementation of something that is done better in other boards or actually an additional layer of protection that may be absent from most boards. Another quick ask. I have been looking for a good wireless custom for my work keyboard and this board is on the short list. I like that it can be made silent and it seems like they really focused on wireless performance (pc bottom, external mode switches, etc...). If you do another stream on this board, can you try testing the wireless performance and see if it connects quicker or is more reliable than some of the other all aluminum boards like the luminkey80 or neo80? Thanks!

I will say in my experience most wireless boards these days perform relatively similarly and I wouldn’t be worried about performance! Nuphy is also known for their portable wireless boards!

the gem 80 is certainly interesting as far as options. they can keep the switches. all far too light for my taste.

Avoid this keyboard; mine was broken OOTB and absolutely refused to charge the battery. Now it's so dead that the lithium battery pack represents an actual fire hazard as batteries like this when this discharged have a chance of self-immolation. Either they fix this tomorrow for me, or it goes back and I get my money.
