Many nursing students and new nurses struggle with feelings of inadequacy. They can feel as if they are stupid, unskilled, or not quite cut out for the nursing profession.

These feelings can even morph into something called "imposter syndrome." Imposter syndrome occurs when a person feels as if he or she has only achieved certain things due to luck or deception. They often discount their own hard work or skills, and worry that people will find out the truth, which is that they are merely fooling everyone into thinking they are more intelligent or capable than they really are.
In this video, Nurse Sarah discusses nurse imposter syndrome and offers tips for nursing students and new nurses to build their confidence and to stop doubting themselves.

Me too! I'm in paramedic school but I constantly have these feelings. Like when people tell me I'm smart or I look at my grades and my performance right now as an EMT and think that I've just fooled everyone into thinking that and that I've been unintentionally deceptive.

Lol, I remember my 2nd week at a hospital as a new grad, I was assigned my first patient. I ran to an empty nurses station a little panicy going "OMG where can I find one of the nurses??" and the only respiratory therapist sitting there giggled and said "but... you ARE a nurse :) " to which I responded "A NURSE THAT KNOWS WHAT THEY'RE DOING@!!!@!@" My preceptor had been helping another nurse along with the charge nurse somewhere. 10 months into the job, when one of the new grads panic, I jump in like "gotcha! what we doing?? lead the way!!!!"

Thank you for this video Nurse Sara. I am a new grad in the ED and boy am I struggling. It is affecting my mental health. On my days off I do nothing but sleep because I don’t want to think about how awful I feel about work. I definitely feel like I’m not smart enough to be an ED nurse. I am expected to graduate in 1 month. Throughout my last quarter of nursing school, I've been feeling incompetent, "not fit to be a nurse", and scared. I'm sure a lot of nursing students or new grads can agree with me that going through nursing school during the pandemic has to be one of the biggest challenges by far. Knowing that this is a common feeling gave me all the encouragement and hope I needed! Tysm !

I stared nursing in 1976. I am still nursing. Hang in there nurses! You have the ability to go ahead with your nursing. Make sure that you also look after yourselves, we are all in together 😘

This is so needed! A REGISTERED NURSE shared a screenshot of my post discussing this feeling my first day as an autonomous Nurse Practitioner in an effort to shame me. (Yes, those posts are still searchable.) Imposter Syndrome is very real and affects every discipline in and out of nursing. It’s okay! And luckily it doesn’t last.

If I heard this advice from Nurse Sarah about 5 years ago; maybe things would have been different for me. I was a "book smart student" but I had a "non-existent" preceptor experience; no skills and no confidence gained, only more doubt. I'm a licensed Rn that never worked in Nursing and have always referred to myself as a "RU-vid" Nurse. If I had a preceptor like Nurse Sarah, maybe things would have worked out differently for me. Nurse Sarah, this video could be one of the most valuable videos for new Nurses that you've ever put together. Thank you from alot of us out there working hard to be good Nurses for our patients. Keep up the good work! (Oh...and please stay as Charming as you always are!!)

I don't know how you knew, but I do feel this way. I only been a nurse 7mths. I went straight to the med/surg floor. Trying to communicate with doctors and family members are a challenge. Trying to chart is a struggle. Its like I've forgotten all my medical terms, and I feel stupid when charting on my patients. This video made me feel so much better. I will be using those tips. You've got this! I always say that nursing school teaches you how to NOT kill people lol. You will learn SOO much more once you start working. It's better to be bit apprehensive rather than think you know everything and end up harming someone because of being too proud to ask for help. :)

You truly will be okay. I graduated and passed NCLEX a month ago. Nursing is hard, and it takes a good 2-3 years working as a new nurse before things start really connecting from what I've seen/been told. Just keep going. Day by day. You. Have. Got. This.

I’m a pharmacy student and I struggle with this so much! Especially during last year, it didn’t feel real and the only proof I even attended school was my final grade. And even though I did well, I struggle with feeling like I even deserve to progress. Self doubt is the WORST

I am not a nurse, but a lab technologist and I've felt this especially during college. I never accepted that I could have possibly been dealing with imposter syndrome until you described it and it resonated so much with me that I felt a bit overcome with emotion. I can't thank you enough for this gentle reminder!! I have been in nursing school for 4 years now and only in year 2 of the 4 year BN program in Canada (Started in LPN and then jumped ship to BN and slowed my role last year in year 2 BN so back in it to win year 2 this year! lol) Anyhoo .. haha .. I am also a mature student at 42 and lately I've been struggling with self doubt and realizing that that has been my biggest growth that must be tackled and needs attention or it will hold me back! This program is one of the hardest things I've done thus far in my life yet it has so much reward!! Thank you for reminding me to breathe and to trust myself and allow the process to flow! I've been a nurse since August and coming out from Covid where I didn't step inside a hospital learning nursing skills as planned for nearly a year has produced this anxiety because in December I will be on my own, thank you for this video! With every day I find myself not doing things in a way that could be better or feeling like I shouldn't be allowed to be caring for patients because I am awful at managing my time and delegating, but I am so glad this isn't something I have to go through alone or without others knowing what I am going through.

This is a wonderful video! Thank you for your compassion and empathy. I remember some instructors and mentors in nursing school who I felt unsafe to show weaknesses to. One in particular was notorious for calling out students. She literally rolled her eyes at me and shamed me when I stumbled on my very first IV stick. It is no wonder that I never asked her for help.

I did not know this was a real thing. I am currently dealing with this , when I confided in my mother and fiance they were shocked and sad I even had these feelings and have been helping me to see things more clearly, but this has been a thought pattern I have carried with me for 10yrs through uni and as a nurse. I don't feel fake because I worked hard and gave it my best every step of the way. But now that it is coming to an end, I feel inadequate and stupid. I wish I had all the opportunity to practice every skills at the clinical. I feel like I don't know what I am doing and I do not belong. Definitely at a crossroad. Have to stay focused and crush the test. I reccomend using kaplan question banks and the kaplan nclex practice tests. I failed the first time around. The second time I kept putting it off forever. I ended up taking the test on borrowed time so to speak. However I took two weeks off work and buckled down. I studied 11 hours a day for two weeks giving myself two days before the test to rest. I passed the first two practice tests and failed the 3rd. However on the third test I had the most questions right by far. Remember the test is also testing your time management. Stay focused and concise as you dont want to make hastey decisions late in the test.

Thank you for this! I'm a nursing professional development educator and I work with a lot of new nurses that experience this. I also experienced this early in my career. I even left nursing for awhile. Thankfully I came back to the bedside and discovered I was good enough, I'd go so far too say I was a great bedside nurse. I moved into my current positive to support and nurture nurses who went through the same things I did. I will definitely be sharing this with them. Thank you!

This video was much needed! Especially for someone with a large nursing platform like yours❤️ I consistently passed all of my prerequisites with an A and had a 4.0 at the time of application. When I got my acceptance letter in the mail, I was in total disbelief. Everyone around me was so confused as to why I thought I wouldn’t get accepted. I couldn’t put into words, I just felt like I didn’t belong. Even as a nursing student now, I do great on an exam and feel like it was only luck. And lab days are the days I struggle with most. It’s one thing to study and pass an exam, but putting on those scrubs and “acting” as a nurse, just makes my confidence plummet. No matter how well my husband and family tell me I’m doing, I just don’t feel like they understand. Thank you for making this video. It’s good to know I’m not crazy 🤣

I feel like nursing is such an important job and it’s to be taken so serious, which further adds to my stress. Only type of work I’ve done prior to nursing school is fast food and call centers. Not gonna lie. I clicked on this video because I thought it was content about working with employees that think they are a nurse. I had accepted the fact that not every thing learned in nursing will be retained to memory. Nursing school is typically geared around med surg which is general knowledge. I have found that most nurses gravitate towards specialist

OMG! I had to do all of my schooling online because of COVID and I just started my new nursing job and girllllll, trust me. I am taking in so much information at work right now and I feel overwhelmed because everything is so new to me. Been a LVN for 3 and 1/2 yrs, (that's LPN for ppl outside of Texas, lol) but only been in the hospital setting for 4mos...and I needed this video today! There's so many great RNs I have the privilege to work with (who coincidentally used to be LVNs back in the day 🤔). But there's some who have never worked with an LVN in their entire career that make me feel like a fraud with a single "look" during shift change report 😔

Omg thank you. I got a 90% on an exam and I was so certain that there was a mistake. I truly didn’t feel I could of done that. I’m a C, B average nursing student. I was so suprised and besting myself up instead of celebrating. I needed this video today. Thank u

WOW! I really needed to hear this today of all days! I'm in nursing school and had two exams today and didn't get the grades I thought I would. Much lower than anticipated. Times like this I want to give up. I know tomorrow is another day and I will continue to work hard and become an RN. Thank you for this much-needed message!

This really hit close to home for me as I have been experiencing this over the last month or so and this video really gave me a clearer idea of what I am going through and to know that it is okay and can be dealt with is really reassuring as I am going through school as a care aide. Yes! I graduate in December, as well. Going through school during the pandemic has been insanely rough. I too am guilty of questioning my path.

I am currently struggling with this syndrome. I am so grateful for this video because It makes me feel heard, and not alone. I feel like I got this far out of luck! I do, however, find keep surprising myself. It looks as if I have my head above water. I'm freaking out internally because I feel like that can change at any moment. This video helped. Thank you

I am definitely going through this right now and something I would say that has helped me, is understanding that you are not expected to know everything your preceptor knows. Think about it, how many other jobs have you had in the past that expected you to know everything a seasoned worker knew. Be realistic on yourself!

I'm a senior nursing student, but I sure don't feel like one! I started school right at the beginning of Covid, so most of my clinicals were online. Went back into the hospital last semester, and I still don't think I know as much as I need to.

I needed to see this, I'm in semester 3/5 in my ASN, and I say so often "I can't believe that in under a year I'm going to be responsible for peoples lives". It is just crazy to me to think that I'm going to learn soooo much more in that amount of time and I feel overwhelmed and like I'm not adequate but this video helped a lot. Students nurses or new nurses? 😂 Funny, because I recently told a really good nurse friend of mine how I don’t suffer from Dunning-Kruger effect, I struggle with Imposter Syndrome! She confided in me that she does too! I’ve been a thoracic-cardio RN, ED RN, cardiac cath lab RN and mostly an ICU RN for 18 years. My friend has been mostly ICU for at least a decade. I even had a brilliant female MD tell me she has had the same feelings! The struggle is real and it doesn’t end. Especially if you work with other co-workers who “eat their young” and practice “lateral violence”. The best to all new nurses.
