I’m a Nurse Practioner as well with my MSN and I couldn’t agree with you more. I have to constantly remind my patients that I’m an NP and not a Dr. bc they use the terms interchangeably often. I just do my best to make it clear. I’m well aware that I’m not an MD and honestly don’t want to be. If I wanted to I would have gone that route as far as my education is concerned. For the people complaining that NP/PA shouldn’t be a thing need to take a good look at the healthcare system here and realize that we are needed. It is not enough physicians to care for all of these people here with all the million health issues going on. I think people should worry about how to make things better instead of arguing over who is more trained etc bc the answer has always been clear to me! Physicians have way more training then any mid level provider and that is okay. That’s why they do the surgeries, specialties and more difficult cases where their extensive training background is required. Basic things like preventative care etc can definitely be handled by a mid level provider. We were created to take the load off of physicians and help not to compete. Ugh…rant over!

Well said! Some DNP just want the autonomy of a MD/DO without the extensive training. The doctorate degree is great. It does not equate to 5-7 year residency though. Plus a fellowship if they choose to.

Just had this convo yesterday. I got accepted in the DNP portion of the program. I initially wanted to be a professor on a collegiate level...however, times have changed and I don't see the need for the doctorate at this time. I'm in a 'brick and motar' school and the program is all online. We are definitely not coming out the program like a MD. Our first two yrs are our internship. The next two are our residency. At the end of the day, studies continue to state patients are VERY satisfied with their nurse practitioners. He needs to take his frustration out on the US capitalist Healthcare system.

I have 3 year, going on 4 th year employment with the biggest medical group in metro Detroit in psych. I have a Dnp, call myself Dr…. Then clarify I am a psych np in all clinical settings. I have good training / apprenticeship, am confident about my practice. DNP is just a title , although I earned it and not ashamed to use it in either academic or clinical setting. The true idea of the attacks on Dnp title and np as a profession from medicine is conflict of interest aka they feel we might be affecting their livelihood.

I am a NP. I don’t have a DNP, but “doctor” is a title, not a profession. I respect physicians and the work they did, certainly not saying the DNP is the same. But, if a NP wants to go by doctor I say they should but clarify either verbally or on the badge, but so should everyone. Also, what about dentists, chiropractors, psychologists, podiatrists, naturopaths? Who all regularly go by “doctor” and no one cares. To also go along with your ending statements, why is no one attacking naturopaths who full blown call themselves physicians? Who tell my post CABG pts to stop their statins because they’re poison. Or stop their GLP1 because those are bad and insulin is the only way to treat diabetes because “it’s natural”. That’s what’s SCARY. The constant hate on NPs I believe has misogynistic undertones since it is a female dominated profession, but that’s just my opinion.

Interestingly, the rate of malpractice for NPs and MDs is equal, meaning one has no more of a chance of being sued than the other.

I am a nurse practitioner and I too have to constantly clarify that I am a nurse practitioner and not a doctor to my patients. Honestly the patients do not care they just want to be given good quality care by someone they can trust that they feel really cares about them. At my practice, the patients have to follow with the doctor at least once a year. A lot of the time, they question why they can't continue to see me. Patients love NPs / PAs and we are tremendously valuable assets to the Healthcare team. As someone already mentioned, we free the docs up to handle the more involved cases and we provide extremely needed care to patients that otherwise would have to wait months and months to be seen by a doctor. I don't understand why that is so difficult for some people to understand. "There are none so blind than those who will not see"

I disagree. All my experiences and my whole family’s experiences with PAs and NPs have been them doing the MD’s job, even with rare genetic diseases they act like they know what to do and not do😮-even though they do not have the experience and knowkege. It is truly frightening.

The website is hating on NPs. Who cares? There are always haters. NPs and PAs will continue to provide excellent medical care to their patients. And instead of focusing on the fact that you're 'not a doctor,' focus on the fact that you're a nurse practitioner. Be proud of your professional title and have clinical confidence!

Medical training now makes it medical school. If we take nursing theory away, that changes the dynamic. Atleast thats what my school told us as we begged for more medical knowledge.

Loved the part about the chiropractors!! Cause the same smoke needs to be applied to them. They call themselves Dr daily and even can qualify for medical housing loans but NPs can’t.. it’s very strange.

I’m an GYN oncology NP and I will tell you it takes a whole village to care for these patients. Patient education takes time especially in this area. We work as a team ( collaboratively with the doctors and independently have clinics during the week as well). It’s no way those physicians can see all the patients without NP/PA, pharmacist and nurses. We are well respected at this particular institution. Patients actually prefer us and I think it because we provide constant patient education.

Majority of Comments here are misleading and dumb. Who told us that the title word Doctor is only for MD?? So you're telling us Dentist, Psychologist , Phd even Chiropractor and DNP who work hard MANY YEars and granted doctorate degree does not deserve to be called doctors? Really. I have my DNP and I always introduce myself to patients using my first name. When patients ask about my education, I explain to them that I received my nursing degree and went on my obtain my doctorates in nursing so I’m a nurse practitioner. Some patients still want to call me Dr. which if they chose to I’m fine with but if I need to call them on the phone for anything, I still refer to myself using my first name. I also work as a professor teaching NP students. I have referred to myself using my first name but moving forward I’ll have students refer to me as professor instead.

I really do feel like everyone needs to calm down. I believe if you’ve earned a doctorate degree from a reputable post secondary academic institution, then you have the right to call yourself introduce yourself as such. However with that being said, if you’re not a Physician then it is your responsibility to make that distinction to any and every patient or person that you come in contact with. Also, it is the responsibility of the PATIENT/CAREGIVER to ask questions about distinction of healthcare professionals credentials prior to, during, or after meeting for care, PERIOD!!! No excuses will be accepted. If you don’t know or are unsure about the care that you’re getting from a particular professional, ASK!! Or else you’re are just as much at fault. #sorrynotsorry

What I know doctor or doctorate is a degree if you have a doctor in nursing than you have the right to be called a doctor period. If you went to medical school than you are a physician.

You do have the right to call yourself a doctor; however, to call yourself a doctor to a patient and not completely clarify what that means is miscommunication (because the majority of patients will believe that you are, in fact, an MD. Unless, of course, after your introduction as a doctor, you have explained that you are an NP and not a medical doctor. It's the lack of clarity to patients that is the problem.

I have mixed feelings about this subject. I have a DNP. I am also married to a radiologist and I understand first hand about our training differences. I chose to do a DNP for my own personal reasons. I introduce myself as a nurse practitioner always. I think we as nurse practitioners should be insulted by the idea that we want to misrepresent ourselves. We know the differences. Now what is important is advocating for better education because nurse practitioners are not going anywhere.

I agree 100%. With that said, this goes even deeper than what people realize, but there is absolutely something that we as nurses can do about this. I don't think ill dig deep into it here since me posting a yotube comment won't won't accomplish much lol. With that said, om launching an organization geared towards Nurse / Nursing field advocacy, improvement & reform. Ny organization will be dealing with this issue along with all of the other issues plaguing nurses and the nurisng field. It's understandable that some physicians may feel apprehensive about the increasing role of Nurse Practitioners (NPs) in healthcare delivery. However, it's essential to recognize that NPs and physicians can work collaboratively to improve patient care and address the growing demand for healthcare services. I received exceptional training as a Psychiatric DNP at Rutgers University, and I'm thriving in my current role. I firmly believe that every profession with a doctoral level deserves recognition and respect. The journey to achieving my degree was challenging, but I'm grateful for the opportunity and proud of my accomplishment. Just as we respect professionals like Dr. Phil and Dr. Jill Biden, doctorally prepared nurses deserve equal acknowledgment and respect for their expertise and dedication.

Great analysis. You're giving them too much energy... It's those microwaved NP programs that's giving the profession a bad name. It's a money game that's bigger than us. And yes I agree that DNP does not make you a Physician, and they should be transparent with patients. Anyway, we as NPs should create out own paths as we manage patients. Quite frankly, while I agree with your position on transparency with credentials with your patients, I know that some of these naysayers are acting out of jealousy and envy that NPs get to practice as providers with less education debt and shorter programs.

In Australia NP is a Masters level only, and it is a lot stricter to get into. We don't even have PAs but I suppose our population is much smaller. Just interesting to see the comparisons. Great vid as always

Med school is difficult to get into in the US. Many doctors just don’t give a sh!t though. We all work with them. I’d rather work with a NP who cares than a MD who doesn’t.

Outstanding video, Laurie. I live in a place where Nurse Practitioners don't exist in the world of health care providers,, but I know people in the USA whose primary care provider is a nurse practitioner, and I also watch videos of such people. I also know a dedicated and experienced, well- trained PA in the USA. My opinion is that if there is a shortage of doctors who can see patients in the USA, then having a Nurse practitioner or PA see that patient is a good thing. The PAs and nurse practitioners I know of are intelligent, well educated and trained, caring people. It is confusing that we use the same title "Doctor" for doctors, dentists, PhDs, etc. I don't know how to remove that confusion.

I hear you and agree to the extent that NPs are not doctors and should not present themselves as such. However other disciplines example a pastor that have a PHD can introduce themselves as doctor so and so Meanwhile you work hard for a PHD that in general population even if you have a PHD in toenail fungus knowledge you get this honor of adding Doctor before their name, my thought is why not the NP? Those doctors that feels threatened by that fact that a PHD prepared NP will have accolades worthy of being called doctor should also take a chill pill. Nurse Practitioners have to deal with being called a Nurse when our role is so much different from that. I think the solution is not in a name but like you said is clarifying to the patient and staff if a patient does not want a NP but a doctor then the practice should honor that. A DNP prepared Nurse Practitioner should be allowed the same accolade as Mr Dr of toenail. Otherwise change the whole damn system. Straaaaigght!

I do not believe that she is hating on practitioners, etc. I think she is on the contrary, loving on people who need correct medical care. I have been to some excellent PAs and I always appreciate them. But I want the final decision to be from a doctors exam. The lack of medical professionals is something that has been affected by the way our country has been infected these last years. Period. Thank you so much for making this video. You go to work every day and see what’s going on. I trust you more than peoples opinions who don’t know firsthand. There is so much more behind this than a shortage of doctors. We will not solve the problem by rushing people through to learn what they need to know in the medical field.🥰

My first job out of school as an NP, I was assigned to travel between three clinics to see patients. All three Dr’s refused to participate in that State’s BON required 3 month follow the Dr orientation. Rather than risk my license I had no choice but to quit

I couldn’t agree more with you, it’s a simple as clarification of your title. Yes patients will still call you doctor and that won’t change, but I think as a professional we have a duty to educate our patients in the moment, about what our role is as part of the patient/provider relationship. I am about to start a AGPCNP at a brick and mortar school that it’s largest student population is DO medical students. But I feel that they have worked hard to establish and maintain the medicine nursing relationship.

Hi first time here. I’m an FNP with a DNP and extremely proud of my DNP. Some of my patients call me Dr. because they can comprehend and understand I’m a Dr of nursing practice. Currently work in behavioral health. ( which I’m kind of self taught bc FNP programs teach you everything is an SSRI). 😂 There are an abundance of NPs in healthcare doing a great job. Unfortunately there are some NPs who were not fit for the role. Just like there were/ nurses or cnas not fit for the professional.

Absolutely agree with you! If you have your Ph.D., DNP, etc., great, call yourself a doctor in the academic setting, but make certain you note that you are not an MD in the clinical setting. It is a matter of understanding between patients and professionals; patients simply do not understand the lingo of titles, and to all patients, "doctor" denotes an MD. If you represent yourself as a "doctor" in the clinical setting (regardless of whether or not you earned a professional title of doctor), you are going to confuse patients. It is more than likely going to cause friction and miscommunication between professionals and patients.

I’m a nurse and my PCP is an NP. She’s been way more thorough and helpful and thoughtful than any Dr I’ve ever dealt with. NPs generally have a better bedside manner, due to their nursing background.

I’m a nurse. Nothings perfect but I think NPs and PAs are doing a great job covering the gaps in our healthcare system. Personally I can’t wait to get my DNP and learn from some the best MDs in my city.

MDs say they are better trained to identify a wider range of conditions and diseases. I go to my primary care MD with a skin rash. He says try hydrocortisone cream and if that doesn’t work see a dermatologist. So much for highly trained.

@@adegbolaoluwawamiri3027they person is trying to emphasize why the fuss on DNPs being called doctor and their training not being competitive when not all MDs know their stuff and that is true. Some MDs are not really good at what they do. Some NPs and PAs are more knowledgeable than some primary care physicians.

@@emeksb4823 You‘ll find there are some Nurses and PA’s who have earned previous PhD’s in the biomedical sciences such as biochemistry or physiology or chemistry or other fields. They’ve gone back to school at an older age for a career in healthcare. They tend to have a wealth of knowledge to contribute and are very brainy.

Too many nurses go straight to get there. NP without having enough experience as a staff nurse. Ive met many who just went though school, DO NOT PASS GO, I totally agree with this NP, classroom learning is 100% better than this on line degrees.

I’m sorry, but I can’t believe you would give the time of day to a person who probably is a Doctor Who made this account and shows the toxicity of the healthcare field by coming after a whole degree I understand that not everybody is competent when they get a degree But this seems very more toxic than informative so I’m just saying someone has money and time to give into their own toxic behavior.

Preach! Truth to power thanks for you candid discourse! If an NP is doctorate prepared and wants to use the title in an education setting that is one thing but under no circumstance should it be utilized in a medical setting. Sure put after it after your name as a credential but not before your name . At the end of the day the “D” doesn’t get you any more coins!

I disagree with this, I think it's perfectly fine to do in a clinical setting, so long as they follow with their title and explain what it is that they do. Physicians don't own the title of "doctor".

@@cbl6520 Actually it was the PhD’s who were titled Doctors first. Physicians wanted a more revered title so began referring to themselves as Doctors and taking the title for themselves throughout the years. (Apparently PhD’s did not gate keep their title.) Doctor comes from the Latin word for “Teacher”.

You made a remark but it is important to educate ourselves. Walden University is top-tier. Walden is a quality university. At the end of the day, it is the students' performance that is the determining factor but all institutions have students with different levels of intelligence, motivation, and output. Whenever we need to make a point about anything, we have to look at all levels and not cast judgments, make mean remarks or insinuations and sweeping generalizations especially if our statement is false. Otherwise, one will be seen as no different than the people who write those articles and speak ill of nurse practitioners.

It is. 😂. Even Nurse Anesthetists feel the same way. The DnP is a joke as a degree. It’s a money grab. More respect would be had for NPs without that title. Hello Mr Smith I’m your Dr Nurse Practitioner. If you get a PhD people understand what that means. Yet it’s much more vigorous. Nurse Practitioners are the future in Primary Care the DnP is unnecessary.

NP is a good concept, however, the training needs to be more comprehensive. No to online schools, also, the years of training is so little to learn a lot. Medicine is wide. Making NP program a four year post BSN and cancelling online schools would be of great help. PS. I’m an RN

Agreed. Online might be okay the first semester or two, but not the whole program. Hybrid might be okay as well. There should be more clinicals and it needs to be more competitve.

I work with a bunch of DNP nurses who are insisting we use the title Doctor when addressing them. I like to give respect where it due but your role here is staff RN so why are we confusing these patients.

at the end of the day its not your title that dictate who is better trained. Nobody comes out blazing from training. The main difference is how vigilant you are and you continue to update yourself after school. As a CRNA reading H and Ps from both our nursing colleagues and MDs . I see no difference. The only difference is who really took the time to listen to the patient. Internal medicine doctors may have an edge in theory but NPs the very good and smart ones have more bedside experience than them. All we need is to connect our bedside experience with theory. The only way to do that is to read and update more. The IOM or institute of medicine has ruled to allow nurse practitioners to practice to the full extent of their training for a reason. If The doctors really have the evidence otherwise I can guarantee you they would have us barred to practice by now. In the CRNA profession, we use to laugh, We are not safe unless supervised from 7am to 3pm but perfectly safe alone after 3pm. In Vietnam or in war time conditions such as Vietnam and stressful conditions we are perfectly safe but not stateside in cities with controlled conditions, uptimized patients and more than adequate support.If we look back when we were at the bedside, How did you really compare yourself to an intern after your 5 years suffering at the bedside?

I couldn’t agree more… why is the attack always against DNP ?!? I spoke to my PCP about this and she laughed and said as long as you’re knowledgeable in your profession and good she doesn’t care. She even stated some MDs don’t even consider DOs real doctors because they couldn’t get in…And some doctors are made fun of, if they go to a Caribbean med school 🫠🫠

I’m a PhD student & the recommendation has always been to only use doctor in an academic/non-clinical setting. It is very confusing to patients so I agree with you on that. I’m shocked more people do not know this.

As far as NPs calling themselves “doctor” as long at they have a doctorate and explain to the patients what they are, what they do and emphasize that they are not a physician, then I see no problem with it. Ex. “Hi, I’m Dr. Soandso, I’m a nurse practitioner, I’m a nurse with advanced training that does everything the physician does, but I’m not a physician”.

@@penandpencilplow One would think, but most people aren't aware that the word "doctor' has no association with medicine, as you stated, it's a latin word that means teacher. Pts also have a legal right to be informed, therefore, doctorally trained NPs using the surname "doctor" have an obligation to ensure that the Pt is informed, as they may not want an NP taking care of them.

We DNPs should never allow ourselves to be called "Doctor" in the clinical setting. It is illegal at worst and unethical at best. 1. In the clinical setting, the term doctor is the colloquial synomyn for physician. Since we are not physicians, we cannot answer to that title. 2. Nursing boards explicitly state that NPs practice advanced nursing with "medical acts". We do not practice medicine, and our licenses are issued/regulated by nursing boards, not medical boards. 3. A DNP has no more practice rights than an NP. The additional education and completion of the DNP project is mainly for translational research, leadership, and education.

I have personally witnessed a physician go out of their way to disregard a DNP provider who was hired...before the DNP provider even started the MD scoffed at the audacity of title DNP. She further discussed with a supervising RN how she would never address the provider as "Doctor" and the RN agreed. Needless to say, the DNP did not work with us long. In my opinion a DNP is not worth it. It's hard enough gaining respect as a NP. Maybe if DNP programs included more intense training and perhaps a residency but it doesn't...just another reason physicians do not respect our profession.
