Think about how often you need your car emergency or not by the way how much you think Insurance companies paid out just on this group of thieves. Then in order to catch them they needed a 2 year investigation how many man hours you think they put in ? I know your people don't believe in punishing criminals for their crimes but that is not how things should be.

I do believe in punishing criminals for crimes, but I'm not gonna go crazy and say that someone should be in prison FOR LIFE or be executed for that. You're assuming that. The right sentence should be accurate with the crime they commited, that's all. I think they should at least get some amount of years in prison, but not life or get executed.

Actually it’s more like winning the lottery with car prices being high the last 2 years. You get more then what your car is worth especially if it’s been damaged in any way the insurance company won’t know and you get paid good. You go and buy a newer car. Liberty mutual gives you a car one year newer. I would of loved it if they stole my car.

Yeah how do they get VIN #’s & serial numbers matching on the car, engine, etc that correlates to paperwork that has to be on file with vehicle history? It would seem like it should be a lot harder. It is no easy feat though I would presume. You have to have the title. The vin is in multiple places. Plus you have to register & insure it. It seems like there should be multiple spots where red flags should go off anywhere in the process. I don’t know if they have once centralized database though of all personal consumer cars. Maybe they should but it gets murky when you have salvages & Frankenstein’d vehicles. That’s where the loopholes exist probably or at least a lot. That’s why you don’t want to buy a car from these shady fly by night businesses. If you buy a whack car it might be confiscated & you’re SOL without luck. These guys need to be locked away for years. I had my Acura stolen. You feel violated. Some guy called me 2 years later & contacted me because he found my registration. He said my car frame & basically the glove box was sitting on 4 cinder blocks inside the garage of an abandoned house that was finally sold & is now being renovated. That’s how it was discovered. Some car thieves used an abandoned house in Queens as a staging & striping spot. Ironically it wasn’t stolen at home. The abandoned house was closer to my house than where they stole it from. A horrible thing though was I had a nice audio system, like 300 CDs & an expensive set of golf clubs in my car. It’s the worst. For every tech advancement there is a concomitant countermeasure. However at this day in age, with technology where it is, it should be a lot harder to steal a car & also not be tracked in a major city. There’s GPS, cameras everywhere, license plate readers, toll booth cams, etc. i think a big problem is people being lazy with their key fobs. But cars being stolen isn’t the only nuisance. I had my car smashed into & nothing was taken. Another time I left my dash cam up & the thief found my hidden radar detector - that was costly. Problem is the idiot only took the units & not the power cords. Probably sold them for $10 each on the streets. Crime sucks & its like the criminals are being coddled & even rewarded at times. Even quality of life crimes are becoming a nuisance again - so called “petty crimes.” It all adds up & the city is less safe & clean. It just blows my mind people have no problem throwing trash onto the street & sidewalk but that’s another issue. At least they got this theft ring busted. Hopefully they’ll be SOL for a while.

Who remembers the dismemberment car theft gangs of the 80s? They did a 60 min segment on them while they stole and stripped a car in under 15 min. Down to the frame ! About 15 people just pounced on the car and devoured it in minutes!
