Step by step instructions for NYAP popper, a fly that is fast becoming a classic for giant trevally. It's simple to tie, has a very castable profile and still makes a good amount of noise.

That would be great for any popper style fishing fresh or salt. Thanks for sharing that easier way to make them without spending a lot on the heads and such. Sale pre-made are sometimes cheaper than making your own. I like tying and can't go fishing now, so I will make some for small mouth bass fishing. All the best as always Martyn. Sean

+Sean Mooney you can certainly catch smallies on these if you scale them down. Good luck with them Sean. All the best Martyn

Great pattern and great tie!! Do you ever tie these with a weed guard? - I could see this being a killer Musky fly. Thanks for sharing!

I am sure it would work for pike and musky.. You could easily add a weed guard, but I will be fishing this over coral flats so not so much need for it

I don't think you could cast it, it's too light

Great fly. Can you let me know what foam you use for the body. And where I can get it from😁

prankster thanks, the foam I use is plastazote block from Veniards. Most UK fly shops will have it, try anglers-Lodge.co.uk

What marker are you using for the parr marks on the foam? Any particular color?

+Eric Kelley I uses Copic or sharpies ususally. For the NYAP tan, olive or grey are popular colours, I don't think it needs to be any specific tone, just try to match your tail colour.

Will follow your instruction when making my NYAP's. One question: could you please measure some of the NYAPoppers and provide with the sizes for Sl12S 6/0? To my calculations Rupert Harvey's video of how to make the heads is for 8/0... but I may be wrong. Thanks!

I have found some plastazote foam blocks with an ebayer in U.K. and bought a couple. The problems is that these blocks have other sizes and in order to obtain a 10-11 mm wide block, I have to cut it... when I do this, because of the dense nature of the material, the cuts are rarely straight or uniform. Recently I've found another shop offering 12,4 mm wide plastazote blocks. Would it be OK to make NYAPs 12.5 (half an inch) wide? Thank you for your help!

Sounds like you need to practice your cutting technique. Use a very sharp blade and cut in one movement. Hope that helps

what are the dimensions of the foam
@FlickingFeathers

height and length will depend on hook size; gape and hook length, but width should always be about 10-12 mm.
