NYC Improves 3rd Avenue with Safe Double-Wide Bike Lane, Bus Lane & Daylighting

THIS IS A MUST WATCH!
There are a couple of before and afters in this video that will show you the stark contrast with NYC's 3rd Avenue which was a dangerous traffic sewer with 5 car moving lanes and nothing in the way of safety for those outside a car to what NYC DOT changed it to now: featuring double-wide bike lanes, a brand new bus lane which features off-set crossing, daylighting and actual obstacles to prevent drivers from parking in this most dangerous places on the Avenue.
On Saturday I got to check out the full implementation and met up with about 20 riders to have a happy jaunt up the nearly new 2 miles of installations (it's hoped it will eventually extend the entire Avenue).
This is certainly now Manhattan's safest stretch of bicycling on any street running north and south. It has real protection and room for people to pass, pedestrians to be able to cross the Avenue more safely and bus riders to benefit faster speeds for buses with new red lanes (hopefully cameras to come shortly!)

Bike infra costs the city PENNIES compared to car infra. They could put this on every avenue in the city for less that repairing a 5 mile freeway segment. The pent up demand for safe bicycle facilities in NYC is enormous.

Love the use of bike racks and CitiBike docks to simultaneously stack bicycle parking away from sidewalks and daylight intersections. Hope to see more of this across the city.

Let’s see how many cyclists register their bikes when the state starts losing revenue. Same folks that will complain groceries are too high due to the added cost of congestion pricing and off schedule delivery times. Keep ya bike lanes south of 125 street

@@Scattaman-Priest If you want the state to lose revenue, registering "cyclists" is a good way to do so. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Congestion isn't free for people making deliveries either. There are libraries, schools, supermarkets, and other places to go to, plus scofflaw drivers, north of 125 St too. Gatekeep something else, like the things that actually harm our city, not the things you think are harmful.

@@samuelitooooo bike lanes harm our city by creating congestion. If you want to ride a bike do it in the street between cars like a motorcycle or a park with a path. These cyclist hate cars because they can’t afford the convenience of owning a car, insurance and gas due to their high rents downtown. So keep that crap downtown and don’t move north of 125. We love our cars and on street parking

Thank you! I still can't believe 3rd Avenue happened. It went from a horrible place to walk to now a place that seems like you can pause and hang out. I mean it still has quite a bit of traffic but there is some sanity to it now. Wish I had shown the chairs, cafes and pedestrians more. You can tell they like it. Maybe the drivers don't, but too bad!

Fantastic! I live far uptown and wasn’t aware of the positive development on 3rd Ave until now. Good to know that it’s now a viable transport route for cyclists. Thanks for reporting on this!

Yes! I spoke at a community board meeting in support of this last year. I no longer live on 3rd Ave, but I'm so happy it got implement without compromising on features. Protected, wide bike lanes! Bus lanes! Designated delivery spots! This is the blueprint now.

Safe protected bike lanes need to be part of every transportation plan. Every street that gets new paving or is has any major repair needs to be added to the bike lane network. Any new construction needs to include access and parking for bicycles.

Sure, the cars are used to “protect “ the bike lane. The shity doesn’t care if they lose expensive mirrors. Plus it also melts another lane away causing more congestion-which they now expect everyone to pay for and believe me-it will be EVERYONE. Do you think manufacturers and distributors are just going to eat the tolls every day?

Great progress! Awesome to see my old city doing so much better for its people. I’ve not had a chance to experience the newer improved lanes, but I have the dedicated bus lanes, and they do wonders for bus riders and drivers. I have at times taken advantage of them when riding my bike where no bike paths exist. The armadillos are a slight improvement over flex posts, but I hope they get upgraded to K-rails (Jersey barriers) or firm bollards. Armadillos and similar items don’t keep drivers from intruding, but they can certainly make a biker lose control.

Ah, I finally got to experience the new bike lane today! Stopped at By the Way Bakery for a GF pumpkin muffin, then hopped over to 3rd and rode up to BAE. I'm just so happy with how roomy it is is!

Every time I visit NYC it gets better and better, and the last couple years, it's felt markedly safer and more pedestrian-friendly. Obviously, there's a lot more that can be done, but it's fantastic to see the change.

Armadillos are an improvement to those rubber stanchions but what you really need are raised curbs, with an additional concrete wheel guard at all locations where the bike lane is right next to the auto traffic.

The armadillos are good in that they allow cyclists to freely enter and exit the cycle lanes to pass in the general lanes or just to get to the other side of the street. That's not practical with a raised curb.

Correct! When a large limb or trashcan accidently dumps into the bikelane, a raised curb requires complete dismount to go around. Which face it, is often in NYC or anywhere really. Armadillos with spacing allows a navigation out and around at slow speeds and avoids crashes. Full curbs aren't always the good answer for our imperfect world @@cmmartti

This still gives 80% of the benefits for a fraction of the cost. For a city as big as New York that's decades behind the curve, I think that's a sensible tradeoff so they can stretch the budget further. As more and more people start riding, the city can readjust and refine their designs.

@@LimitedWard pavers are very cheap though and so are concrete curbs for bike lanes. I’m worried this design won’t improve much since the standard designs for roads are made by the MUTCD and they severely promote car usage.

@@miles5600 the treatments you are describing are significantly more expensive than what they did here. I don't know how you can argue ripping up the road to install pavers and concrete curbs is cheap compared to reconfiguring the lanes. You still get plenty of protection thanks to the parking on the right, and the redesigned intersections force drivers to slow down when making a turn, much like with raised crossings. The city, for better or for worse (mostly for worse) has a limited budget that they can use to improve cycling infrastructure. I'd much rather they spend it on lower cost solutions that have nearly the same safety benefit than perfect solutions that take away funding from other important safety improvements. The cities around the world with great bike infrastructure didn't get it perfect on first try. They added the best infrastructure they could afford at the time and improved it later iteratively over time.

@@LimitedWard i get what you’re saying and yes my plans are a bit expensive. It doesn’t change the fact though that the city is still building car centric infrastructure and basically making cycling infrastructure an afterthought instead of the center, you don’t need much money to take away car friendly infrastructure. Yes it’s true that most cities didn’t get it right the first time, but all the examples, studies and prove they need is all online and very easily accessible, also cities like Paris and Oslo did get it right the first time with little effort, The Netherlands also got it right the first time and that’s in the 80s where they were already installing raised crossings, raised crosswalks, moving away from asphalt, adding more green, chicanes, narrowing roads and much more. The only way to make sure this happens is when proper research is done and a national design manuals is made that explains why each element is used instead of telling the designer like a bible without explanation. This is also why The Netherlands is the only country in the world to have actual safe streets that’re very straightforward and basically don’t need any road signs explaining what to do or what something is, when people actually give a damn about the stuff they develop and change you can create a wonderful country. I’m only 17 and obsessed with all of this and i’m trying to change the way people think about systems and the way they perceive the world as it is today, it’s hard to explain in text, but in real life it’s much better. Anyways this doesn’t have much to do with the subject, but i still wanted to give this information to amuse.

No they don't. Most bike riders in Manhattan do not obey the traffic laws. Most go though red light. A lot of bikers will go the wrong way. You put your life at stake crossing the street in Manhattan because of these dumb bike riders.

If a person on a bike goes through a red light or is going the wrong way on a one way street they should be fined. I was hit by a person on a bike a few years ago who went though a red light. My leg was broken because of this idiot and I lost two months of work. The idiot on the bike left. It was a hit and run. These jerks on bikes are just as dangerous as the idiots in cars.

Just returned from a weekend in NYC, it was my first trip in years. I only got to bike once, and the new infrastructure was amazing, but as a pedestrian I noticed that it was so much nicer and faster to move around the city thanks to the daylighting and pedestrian islands.

I understand this is an improvement but this is not "good" infrastructure. Just as most bike lanes in Barcelona, my city, this bike lane is placed on the wrong side of the road. It should be placed on the right hand side for a number of reasons, one of them being right turns for cars over the cycle lane are much safer for cyclists than left turns because of a much wider driver's angle of vision. Of course cities with a weak tradition and poor design, such as Barcelona or New York, make a big fuss about bus stops but that minor "problem" can be solved with a proper bus stop design (on a floating wide platform) and a change of habits (that comes swiftly): the alleged interference between cyclists and bus users is simply fear of the unknown or resistance to change: real statystics show there's little interference and little to none danger. On the other hand real statystics do show that cars left turn is more dangerous than right turn for cyclists. Placing bike parking right next to the pedestrian crossing is of course an improvement in visibility for drivers but it would be much better if there was a completely empty gap of at least 5 meters with no objects at all, complete clearance, as they call it in Copenhaguen; a few thin bollards and proper road markings should be enough to keep cars away. A four year old kid standing behind a bike or behind a dust bin is completely hidden form the drivers vision. There also should be no main street with one-way infraestructure for bikes; it should be either a wider protected two-way bike lane on the right side of the traffic or a one-way protected lane on each side of the street. On minor neighbourhood streets you might consider a one way lane on the left side, with the bikes running against traffic on this "contraflow" lane, and the possibility of bikes riding also in the same way of traffic with the aid of some traffic calming procedures, always in a low traffic volume environment. On this regard, the standard in the Netherlands right know for wide avenues is a two-way bike lane on each side of the road, but of course that is combined with a number of designs and procedures that they have been putting in place for decades. And one last tip: don't ever copy any bike design coming from Barcelona; or if there is a coincidence, try to avoid that particular design or be skeptical and check it twice; they don't usually get it right, that's why the city holds such bad statistics for cycling, both modal split and safety. You know well enough what designs we should all copy or learn from and where they come from...

great job, but the stinky, loud and fast motorbikes should not be allowed on the cycling path, its discouraging toward children, elderly using same path and would defeat partially the purpose in changing mobility.

I am going to email my city to try and implement some of these features. I love the usage of bike racks to daylight- Ann Arbor uses too many damn bollards. They could save some money and add more bike parking

Agreed. Although NYC DOT just announced they are widening 2nd Ave bike lane from 59th to Houston. Hopefully they extend these better lanes everywhere soon.

This is good step in the right direction. But, (especcialy) the big cities should take a look at the bicycle infrastructure of The Netherlands. In most of the cities and villages the cyclist is “king”. The Total transportation infrastructure is build around Cycle ways. Pro. More safety for cyclists, space to create, more room for pedestrians, cleaner air and not unimportant, less annoyance from/to cardrivers.

I’m sorry but the new intersection design is a left hook waiting to happen. The old mixing zone was proven safe with only a limited number of fatalities (all cause d by reckless drivers) over a period of a decade or more. Everything else is golden.

What? There wasn't even a mixing zone on 3rd Avenue. You should come try and ride it, it is far better than a mixing zone. Even most of my grumbly, hard-to-please friends have mustered up a "yeah, it's pretty good".

This is MILES better than a mixing zone. It forces drivers to slow down to make the turn and keeps cyclists out of the blind spot of cars since they initiate their turn before crossing the bike lane.

On the contrary, the pedestrian refuge islands give a safe space for them to stand that's safe from bikes and cars. The daylighting ensures that the islands are visible from a good distance, so cyclists can spot pedestrians from a far enough distance to slow down.

This is garbage 🗑️ I’m so sick of these bike lanes citibikes, bike racks and now wider bike lanes so cyclists could ride next to each other to Converse? How pathetic does that sound? Anything to push drivers out of the streets then the city has some nerve to charge congestion price! How about charging cyclists congestion price also!

i sense more than one type of congestion here Ryan. besides, you're angry about traffic, yet your solution is opening up more lanes for cars, which has long proven to be making the problem only worse. meanwhile after decades of inaction the council enact actual solutions for it: usable cycle lanes, bus prority lane, and congestion charges. yet you're against that. boggles the mind

The whole design has nothing to do with safety. It’s designed to cause choke points and slow everyone down to make driving as miserable as possible. Accidents are actually UP 62% since the implementation of these “improvements “. They cause the congestion and now they want us to pay for it

If you watched the video you'd see that the other side of the street has a bus lane. Since the doors are on the right side of our busses you need the lane on the left. Also: guess what? There are also pedestrians on the other side of the street too!

@@StreetfilmsCommunity I saw it on google news a while ago. When I clicked on it, it opened up a whole report and one of the things they mentioned was pedestrian fatalities up 62%. It obviously was not about the 3rd av “improvements” but all these redesigns are the same crap. Nothing to do with safety

Removing cars will come to haunt NYS. All that registration revenue will disappear and other states don’t suspend registrations for unpaid NY fines. Cyclist don’t carry insurance but run pedestrians over all the time. When groceries are triple the price because of congestion pricing and OT paid for overnight deliveries the cyclists will just move to ruin the Bx and Queens

@@coopaloopmex In real life people don’t wait for some report based on a sample set chosen by the researcher to provide the expected outcome the researcher and sponsor desire. No echo chamber in real life implementation. People will cut spending and relocate business as their skilled employees move elsewhere. You may be able to ride your little bike around but where you live will no longer be the place “to be”. Once the revenue dries up all these programs will be rolled back because you and the other cyclists do not want to pay real income tax.

@@TheRailLeaguer bikes don’t pay registration and inspection fees to include insurance. So how do bikes benefit state finances? This is America not Europe. We like our cars we travel long distances. Nobody is riding a bike from NYC to the Jersey Shore or to upstate NY. Just because a small group wants to ride bikes around the city doesn’t mean you have to punish all residents by banning cars. How will you get your groceries when trucks cannot deliver in neighborhoods? Do you really think some low paid worker is going to ride an e bike from a distribution center to your local grocery. It’s possible but you don’t want to pay the added cost for this. The state can’t even get electric chargers on the streets but Hochul wants to take your gas stove. Let’s live in reality not some utopian fantasy and keep the bikes in parks where they belong
