One of the cool things about the NYC Shopping Scene? Sample Sales! I went to the two that seemed most interesting to me: BOSS and Anne Fontaine. I quickly returned to the hotel after a morning at the shops because we moved hotels! I cannot believe it took SO LONG to travel just 1.9 miles from Chelsea to Times Square. The first hotel we stayed at was the Kimpton Hotel Eventi and we switched to the New York Marriott Marquis which happens to be in the heart of Times Square. It was crazy to see Times Square packed all the way up till midnight! I would have loved to prance around but it was just too cold! On our first evening there, I went to Bryant Park to get a babka slice and rugelach and then to Grand Central.
We woke up early the next morning and the next thing on my itinerary was to visit the 9/11 Memorial. It was a far walk from our hotel so we opted for an Uber to lower Manhattan. We spent some time walking around the reflecting pools and the nearby firehouse. I recall being in NYC when construction of the reflecting pools was in its initial stages. Everything was barricaded and you could still see rubble from the twin towers. The steel cross was displayed on a different street but it has since moved into the 9/11 museum. I think these pools are an incredible way to honor the memory of those who were lost. According to the architect, the pools represent, “absence made visible.”
The Oculus is just a few feet away and it’s such an incredible building. The exterior represents hands releasing a dove whereas the two long interior skylight openings are positioned in a way so that on each September 11th at 8:46 AM, when the first plane hit, to 10:48 AM, when the second tower collapsed, light shines through those two openings and washes the floor with two beams of light. If you're walking towards The Oculus from the reflecting towers, you'll notice that it's not exactly aligned with the other buildings; it's shifted at an angle to allow the light beam to wash onto the floors each September 11th!
Just a short walk from The Oculus is the NYC Bean at the Jenga Tower! We were pretty hungry so we walked to Chinatown! It's jam-packed with people and there are restaurants up and down Canal Street.
