NYC Is Full and Sinking 

What’s crazy to me is that NYC is one of the largest cities in the world, but it’s all located on a tiny part of New York State.

Though they say it’ll take a hundred years, I hope they’re not unhurriedly working on the issue. People have a habit of leaving things until it becomes a big issue.

I think the mistake was to build so many scrapers in one area. It'll be interesting to see how the Metro system is affected.

As a Floridian it crazy to see New York sinking before Florida,I remember I was being told by my teacher that Florida will go underwater in a few decades.

The Dutch can protect their country from the rise of sea level. Americans need to learn from them

The sheer amount of compounding infrastructure on Manhattan Island is just staggering.

That's why urban planning is so important to avoid having a highly concentrated urban area that's physically and visually unbearable, let alone environmentally.

Can you imagine a million years later, New York is gonna join the Lost City of Atlantis

The same thing happened to Guam. There were so many U.S. serviceman and materiel concentrated on one side of the island, that the island itself almost tipped over.

What's scary is that it seems some places didn't learn their lessons the first time around smh

I hope this is a wake up call to some folks to get the hell out of these overcrowded cities and embrace a quiet outdoor life.

Why don't they demolish some abandoned buildings! Then stop building!!

It was once my dream to live in a big, populous city like New York. But now I'm like nahhh, I'm absolutely loving my life in the country side near the mountains and fresh lake. I wouldn't exchange my life here for anything else.

Oh great! I’ve always wanted to move to NYC. Now by the time I afford it, I would have arrived with my luggage in hand wondering where tf am I and where tf is the city 😂

It sucks that the world we all know is slowly sinking

Everyone always tells us not to worry about everything because it's "so far away", but I dunno... I think it's way sooner than we think.

That’s wired, when I was in school they taught us that NYC would be completely under water by 2024 because of global warming.

I love when an article gives me a unit of measurement I can't ever use. "equal to the mass of forty seven hundred empire state buildings" oh thanks, that puts it into perspective.

but if it's happening... EVERYWHERE.... then maybe it's not the weight of the buildings? maybe it's just... nature?

Quite literally the most normal thing to happen in New York

The problem is that Society in general is way too preoccupied with stuff going on in _their own_ lives, and _only_ their own lives. Most people could not care less about stuff thats not directly related to themselves, their family, their livelihoods, their belongings/property, their friends, their pets. If this issue was never brought to the publics attention, then New Yorkers could literally live there forever and only start to evacuate when a part of the city actually collapses. Thats why issues like poverty global warming pollution etc arent receiving much attention. People need to wake up and actually see and learn about what the hell is going on _around_ them, _outside_ of their usual concerns and preoccupations.

When everyone wants to live in New York that happens

I grew up in NYC and worked there for a few years. I left and never looked back. It is a cesspool.

What if we built a protective sea barrier throughout every coast of every nation of our planet?

Cram a bunch of huge buildings on a small piece of land surrounded by water. Genius 🧐. There’s a whole state of New York that’s filled with countryside yet everyone wants to squeeze in one area. It will be underwater in the future.

Let it sink. The ridiculous rents will go down.

I am not worried cause I have been to NYC twice in the late 1960's and no intention of ever going back. I am sinking too. I use to be 5' 7 1/2" and now I am 5'7 and going on 77. Soon I won't be around either.

Who would've thought NYC would end up underwater before Florida

I dreamed 3 times that Manhattan totally crumbled and sank and the water rose up to the 6th floor in the Bronx, but the South Bronx from 169th street down, was gone too. Then a kid in the dream said to me, YOU BETTER PREACH.

Every April, my school has a paid $3,000 field trip to DC and NYC from LA for the 8th graders. I went there just a few months ago this year. After we went, we got news about New York sinking and stuff like that, so I joked around with my friends and said “I feel bad for the 8th graders of 2035 when they can’t go to NYC because it’s half-submerged.”

Yeah, it's good that they mention Jarkata here. I've seen a video on that place and it's truly sinking so New York could look like that one day. Though, many, many years later. And who knows maybe it would stop sinking when the ground compresses but I'm unsure.

It’s almost like the people in charge should have done something a while ago. Improve the infrastructure of the town in case something exactly like this were to happen.

I heard that the same thing is happening to Venice, Italy. I remember I watched a movie called “Day After Tomorrow” with Jake Gyllenhaal. Wonder if something like that will come into play.

Years ago there was a program called Life After People. It imagined what would happen if people just disappeared. New York City was one of the first to disappear because right now they pump out water 24/7. If that were to stop then it would flood fairly quickly. So one way or another that city is destined to go under.

Thank you very much to mention about Indonesia, I live in Jakarta. People say the heights of buildings here decrease about 2-10 centimeters (0.79-3.94 inches) every year.

"it will take hundreds of years before the city becomes like Veneice". How about we try and prevent that from happening for future generations? Even though it may not be our generation (it could be if we have certain technology), it could be our great grandchildren's problem.

in a couple of thousands of years from now NY will be the equivalent of the lost city of atlantis to people from the future, a city that was once huge and full of poeple that got lost in the sea.

This reminds me of San Francisco.... Its actually built on OLD ships..... I watched an entire documentary on it. TONZ of ships came into San Francisco for the gold rush.. Well once getting there they would DITCH the sail vessels and make a home there instead. Well there were SO SO many wooden vessels and they were running out of land .. So they ended up using the wooden ships.... Sinking them and putting fill over them. Well now the wood is rotting and the land is becoming unstable.

the problem seems to be they never really packed the earth properly and did not have the equipment to do it properly. a lot of cities built on the waterfront will eventually sink and Florida with its limestone and coral that slowly dissolves with also slowly disappear

Unaffordable real-estate, $14.35 street taco's, giant rats, occasional terrorist attacks, awful traffic, smog, inefficient and dangerous transport, rampant drug usage, high crime and now it's sinking. I watched an Asian guy streaming in Brooklyn and it seems like there's a lot of racism there too, and not from white people 🙄 He was Asian American 😭.

Solution: Build more buildings.

May need to reroute the hudson and east rivers into one on Manhattan's norhthern end and into the Sound, fill in the emptied river beds and connect Manhattan to LI and NJ and build a sea wall down in the harbor. This just might save New York. The Rockaways on Queens southern end could serve as the new entry port for the City, next to Jfk airport so it would work out. Save and revitalize the City.
