My grandfather, who was an American immigrant, proudly served in World War 1 (the Great War) in France. He was a gas victim (either mustard gas or phosgene), came home a veteran - and then worked hard delivering ice up stairs in walk-up flats in New York City. He became ill in the 1940's and died in 1951 at the age of 53 of painful stomach cancer, almost definately due to the effects of the gassing attack, as did thousands of his cohorts. My mum never liked talking about it. I never knew him -- but am proud to be named after him. I am sure he was there or heard of the dedication of this monument when he lived in New York City.

Come on Mayor, just use present technology to identify them. Satellite surveillance. Even if they cover their heads and wear sunglasses they can be identified. If you don't have access to the technology, and that wouldn't be a big surprise considering it's NYC, then hire one of the many large corporations that do.

WWI was a very dangerous war with the gasing . All of our different branches of Military deserve our respect and admiration. My father fought in WWII. He received many medals including the Silver Star. He was against war ...wishing that we human beings could deal with our issues peacefully. He still served. I am very proud of my Father who passed away at home when I was 9. I learned so much from him. My Mother always shared all she could about my Father's experiences. God bless all our Veterans....living and passed.
