I think Addams couldn't be further from hip-hop and the whole culture. One thing hip-hop heads can't stand is a liar. He's pandering and trying to maintain an image of having the black vote and support while simultaneously destroying the community, and it seems like the people are seeing through the facade. Damn near impossible to become a leader of the establishment without conserving the establishment. That's how they get so established. Its a lot easier to appear progressive than it is to be progressive, and that makes it tough to evaluate leaders. Great breakdown, you separate policy and action from optics in a way every mainstream political commentator could take notes on.

Personally I can’t imagine any other mayor doing things all that differently from Adams. From what I see, he’s got older citizens who’s votes really matter pretty firmly in his pocket and has to make himself look just “down” enough to not rile up any younger voters who are already more skeptical of his pro-cop background. He doesn’t seem all that different from older parents who wanna be hip but don’t quite understand the youths- *edit an image that really seems intentional so he can continue to slip these cost cutting measures through at the expense of the public

My feel is that the song Cop Killer is much more relevant today than ever before, Ice-T on the other hand, not so much, not to take away from what he has done and the inspiration he has given the world, but he does have some boomer vibes coming off him at times. As for the mayer... I am not shocked when a former cop who turned politician is implementing policies that suppress freedoms and rights and expand the power base and likelihood of abuse from police, while at the same time attempting to censor music, as if limiting freedom of speech has ever silenced powerful voices before. A lot of this is me looking back at America through the looking glass, and sadly makes me glad it is no longer my home.

I don't have a positive outlook on any of this. It's amazing and great that the Hip Hop museum exists but, how does this help the communities it was birthed from? It feels like it'll just be an anthropology excercise for tourists and well off families who have access and free time to visit. Whilst struggling schools will have to raise money to pay for a day trip. What version of Hip Hop would they be telling there in 10-20 years time? Does Post Malone get a "pioneer" section cause he dropped a couple of mil in donations in 10yrs time? There's just a lot of questions that keep coming up when thinking about where the money is coming from to fund the museum.
@TheCompanyMan
@TheCompanyMan Год назад
I believe there’s a plan to have the revenue from the museum go to help financially strapped pioneers. Then of course there the city tax dollars. Let’s hope that goes to the community, even though that community has been supremely gentrified in the decades since

Sometimes I want to give leaders (especially new ones) the benefit of the doubt as a change of position will almost always mean a change in perspective. They may realise certain things aren't as clear cut as previously thought. However, I often find it cringeworthy when politicians align their public image with the arts because I don't think the mentality required to be a successful politician and the mentality required to fully appreciate the arts, especially arts such as hip hop, are compatible. Maybe it's my experience with Zambian politicians...I don't know.

The intersection of hip hop and politics. I might have an answer to the question. Eric Adams reminds me of a Senator from Arizona who got elected as someone who wanted to improve the conditions of others however how she moved in public was counter to what she portrayed. Adams is doing thing in some respects. Both politicians are punching down on the most vulnerable of society instead of punching up. It's just a thought.

@@TheCompanyMan I was gonna edit my comment but after a little reflection aka food time I'll give some food for thought. We all know the essence of Hip Hop is those who are vulnerable in society punching up at existing power structures. What Adams is doing is using those existing power structures to continue to punch down on others. On the real, Hip hop is socialism, not the way the American right wing thinks that it is. Looking at it from that lens, the things Adams is doing isn't Hip Hop in my opinion. Always appreciate the content my brother. Nothing but love for everyone on the mission.

Reading about Eric Adams I see a bit of Minneapolis mayor Jacob Frey. Swap out "hipster" for hip-hop, and that's Frey. Although he isn't a cop himself, he's in DEEP with the MPD now. There's a lot of shady shit going on there, together with homeless encampment sweeps that I frankly consider crimes against humanity. And when he was elected to City Council, he pitched himself as a reformer! Just a terrible mayor.
@TheCompanyMan
@TheCompanyMan Год назад
I remember hearing about him during COVID. He presented as for the people. Then I heard something about him flipping the script. What shadiness do you think it is?
@backsgl
@backsgl Год назад
@@TheCompanyMan 1. Apologies for my delayed response here. 2. There's plenty of reporting by the Minnesota Reformer that's gone into more detail, but here's some highlights. In the wake of the killing of Amir Locke he announced an end to the no-knock warrants that resulted in that incident... but even that ban had so many holes in it that there was practically no difference. There was also the fact that the MPD has a long history of racism (one glaring example is how in 2018 officers in the fourth precinct dressed a Christmas tree in menthol cigarettes, Popeyes containers,Takis, and a 40, in one of the most predominantly black precincts in the city) There's also a scandal about millions in aid for feeding hungry kids in the state, and how one of the many charged in this scheme is a former Frey policy aide. That's not a direct indictment of Mayor Frey, obviously, but it speaks to someone with a lax attitude towards corruption. Or how his office is currently attempting to justify an environmentally devastating development in the East Phillips neighborhood right now. The mayor also has a habit of ducking away from tough questions at press conferences, and when he tries to make random public appearances he gets chewed out by residents. There's a lot more out there, and I don't think it's easily tied into hip-hop, so I understand not making a whole TBD or breakdown or anything. Its just something that this one reminded me of.

The hypocrisy is astounding because success has many fathers and failure is an orphan. He claims to be a Hip-hop public office holder but puts on policies that compromise arts education and without that policy the music wouldn't have developed as much. Not respecting the Drill rappers freedom of expression is institutional gatekeepers which older generations don't accept youths to do what they want. The search and frisk policy is desperation and a sign of being overwhelmed with the responsibility. Ice T 's status is now being part of the establishment due to his body of work. But he stay contradicting himself and talking outta both sides of his mouth. Eric Adams is just a black Republican that likes hip-hop. That's it. It's important to keep in mind that music is downstream of politics and societal conditions but this is also something not talked about enough within hip-hop, something that's supposed to be about fighting injustice, because just about every rapper is a millionaire or is trying to become a multi-millionaire and doesn't wanna endanger their revenue. I doubt that even IF Nas and Jay-Z came out and slammed Adams things would change, but you can never expect those with money and power to change the system. So I don't really celebrate anything that celebrates people getting INTO the establishment

The problem isn’t gramps using hiphop culture to communicate …it’s when the people aren’t able to read between the lines when they’re pandered to. (That’s NOT hiphop)

It pains me to say but C. Delores Tucker was in fact right about gangsta rap music, the glorifying of a mob type lifestyle was in fact detrimental. There is a difference from painting an image and glorifying it.
@LeonaHeart
@LeonaHeart 20 дней назад
For the Gangsta rappers who indeed glorify it. Not all do. Drill rappers are more known to me literally glorifying it. Telling your story if your reality or environment is not glorifying it necessarily. Ice Cube and NWA and even a lot of Ice T isn’t necessarily glorifying it if you pay attention. “I’m in love with the co co.” Is definitely glorifying it.” He was ridiculed by a lot of people for that. And the video was a horrible influence! In Ice Cubes “it was a good day” he says some thug stuff like he isn’t get caught for crimes, but in the video at the end, all the police and helicopters are at his house. Lol. Accountability! Art of storytelling but he did not leave it at an unrealistic fantasy condoning the nonsense in real life. He also has a great song in defense of gangsta rap called “Gangsta Rap made me do it.” And a lot of the terminology was geographically regional. MC Lyte said she had never heard of calling someone a “Dog” until West coast rappers got on the scene, or “Bitch.” She now realizes that what was going on over there was different than what was happening on the East Coast. They thought 2Pac was insanely sexist and evil for referring to a woman as a bitch, but it was more regionally normal as a term of endearment, unless using it in the context of trying to be insulting. Eryka Badu said it’s a term of endearment in Dallas where she is from. 2pac has some of the most encouraging music for women, and told Biggie to make music for the women because they will buy your music, and the men will buy what the women like. C. Delores Tucker had our best interest at heart, but like Kendrick Lamar said in response to Fox News ridiculing Hip Hop “Hip Hop is not the problem, our reality is the problem.” Poverty is the culprit of crime.

@@LeonaHeartYou really had me intrigued by your response because I rarely read long responses lol. However I believe we are actually agreeing to agree on most points, the only thing I have to disagree with is calling a woman a bitch (female dog) as a term of endearment. I wouldn’t call my mom, sister, or niece a bitch because I want to express my love. So I believe Erykah Badu can keep those sentiments in her personal circle and not teach our youth that’s that ok because it’s not. Overall you raised great points and really know your hip hop for sure. 💯

@@DJVeeRiche I never said that I think it’s a great term of endearment or that I use it as one. Lol. But it’s a fact that some people do. Whether it’s a good idea is a whole other question that I never addressed. Lol. No man is allowed to call me that, and they know it. It also isn’t a part of my personal cultural environment. But thanks! You made great points also!
