NYC streamlined steam locomotive, 20th Century Limited

English: Speaking of streamlined steam locomotives, C53, C55 streamlined style, Pasina shape of South Manchurian Railway, and British Mallard number, but in the New York / Central railroad which existed in the United States, a train called the 20th century express is called a large streamlined Hudson aircraft was towing. It looks like a locomotive that seems to appear in science fiction movies in the 50's. The 20th century express is currently abolished, but Amtrak's train runs the same route

My dad worked for the NYC from 1931-35 and after being a hostler in Croton he got on the extra board as an engineer. He was going into the Naval Reserve and for his last day he got to run the 20th Century from Albany to Syracuse, with the regular engineer to keep him on schedule; because if you were 2 minutes late it was very serious, unless there was some mechanical defect. After the war when he finished college he went back to the NYC in the Public Affairs department making movies, and things like that. He got to ride the 20th Century many times to talk to passengers and do PR work on the train.

@@Meengineer100 Steam locos were worth a lot of money as scrap in those days, so it took a magnanimous corporation to forego scrapping in favor of donating for display. RED CHINA was building new steam locos, at hundreds of thousands of dollars each, long after we dieselized. Thank goodness we have as much footage on film to video transfer as we do! (I just wish there wasn't as much rampant duplication---under different labels---as there is: I had as many as five of the same company promo films of some of them.)

a ticket on the 20th Century Limited cost a fortune, even in the 30s. Well according to the PRR fares on the Broadway Limited in 1956 a Bedroom was $76.21 which is almost $650 now. I'm sure the 20th Century was more, and the Super Chief was even worse. in 1968 a Super Chief base fare from Chicago to LA was $89.84 add the Room fee of 23.90 its over $100 (not counting the $7.50 extra fare surcharge). that's nearly $1000 today. No wonder less and less people took the train. who the hell could afford them other then the rich?

The Dreyfuss class style Hudson 4-6-4 types were very handsome looking locomotives with their streamlined body casing, it's a shame that all the Hudson locomotives were scrapped and not one engine was preserved for display. The NYC rr should have preserved one Hudson engine for display and reapplied the streamlined casing to the locomotive boiler, it is sad that none of the Hudson and Niagara type locomotives were saved from being scrapped and placed on static display at some type of museum. The streamlined Hudson engines and passenger cars are what made the "20th century limited" an attractive and spectacular looking passenger train consist.
