Nyerere's Official Visit to US 1963 

As an african, i'm proud of the contributions made by our founding fathers of independence. President Nyerere, like many others @ the time took power during a critical period where very few institutions were established. His philosphy on life was genius. The man had a dream of uniting Africa. Wether he succeeded or failed, lets learn from him and do better. Even our own Kwame Nkruma had critics who hated his policies. Mwalimu Nyerere was a great man. As a Tanzanian and now a US Citizen it really inspires me now in my life

JFK was a very good person.He wanted African countries to be truly independent-economically,politically ,socially and intellectually. You can see how much he respect Nyerere.I feel bad the CIA had him killed! He was better than Obama. Africa tungekuwa mbali sana.

Baba watu Mwalimu Nyerere was the man Tanganyika needed at a critical point in its history; he was a true statesman rather than a demagogue of the sort common in post-colonial Africa. He was also a very nice man. He was a member of St. Peter's parish and went to mass every Sunday with us in Dar es Salaam where he would stand with the pastor and greet the parishioners on the church steps - which made his bodyguards very nervous, I might add. China went through a bottleneck period under Mao during which people died in masses but look where China is today; Nyerere tried to encourage local production of textiles, spare parts, etc, on the way to industrialization just as UK did. Today everything we use comes from China or outside Tanzania; when will we be able to develop our own industrial capacity?

This man was uniquely brave.. At the beginning presidents (in most African countries) used to be called "Mtukufu" (meaning "glorious") eg: "Your Glory President". I think it was meant to be a translation for "Your Honor President".. In later years, he STOPPED it and tell people "to stop calling him "your glory president" as it is only God the Almighty who is glorious". That was one hell of statement of braveness and wisdom that very few leaders have if not none.

What was the mission and vision of the trip?

He even stepped down after ruling the country for almost 25 years (i think the first president in Africa to do that), even went back to his village and lived a normal local life cultivating and keeping cattle. I'm talking about those years before globalization hit the the place where all people didn't think Tanzania would go ahead and be peaceful country without Nyerere be around.
