My grandfather was heads groundskeeper at the Polo Grounds for about 5 years in the early 1950s. My grandmother made him give up the job because he would come home late, make the dog bark and wake her up. LOL My grandfather would put the chalk down for the batters boxes. When Sal Maglie pitched, he would, uh, put them a little off. Every year Maglie would give my grandfather a case of booze for his contributions to the cause. LOL My prized possession - which holds little collectible value but is valuable to me - is a New York Giants Fungo bat (says property of the New York Giants right on it) that Leo Durocher used to hit fly balls to Willie Mays. When I was a kid, my father used the same bat to hit fly balls to me under the NJ Turnpike for practice. If you know anybody who knew folks on the grounds crew at the Polo Grounds in that era I'd love to hear it.

Fantastic Video. We are going to be at the Polo Grounds 9/23/23 @ 12 noon to celebrate 100th anniversary of the Dempsey-Firpo bout at the Polo Grounds. It actually occurred on 9/14/1923.

Funny how a public school stands at the exact spot where Willie Mays made The Catch. Always wondered if there's a specific floor or wall marker indicating the approximate place?❤

Wish i could have been there but I live in FL and haven't been back to NYC in a very long time. The PG was my second home growing up and the Giants were my first love. I have no idea how many games I saw there but I would guess well more than 50. I was crushed when they left but the truth is that the fans had stopped supporting the team which made it easy for Stoneham to go. I was there for Game 1 in the 54 series and clearly remember "the catch" though the throw was even more incredible. I missed the "shot heard around the world" as I was away at school. I never stopped being a Giant's fan though it's not quite the same. But, then again, neither am I. All the best to the NYGPS. Wish I could be a part of it.

I actually saw major league baseball played at the Polo Grounds. It was the Mets in the first two years. They were my first games as a kid.

I am admittedly biased -- but that aside --- this was a terrific tour. Jon Miller and his Spouse, Janine -- were so gracious and very engaging. But with or without the Millers -- it is a fun walk!

While you were there, did anybody ask you for an autograph thinking you were Larry Bird? ;-)

Truth be told, that's one under-reported reason why the Giants left New York.

@@trapezemusic Same reason why the Dodgers left Brooklyn. Both areas were once thriving communities. It's amazing seeing John Lindsey smiling in these photos. So typical of the slimy NY politicians who celebrate driving businesses OUT of New York (Amazon their 25K jobs most recent).

I was able to walk it from Yankee Stadium, came down the Brush Stairway and watched 2 Little League games in progress that day across the street. How was the stadium situated using the Little League fields as a reference point?
