When I was in High School I used to love to hate on Nyjah for winning every contest, these days I don't hate on him and think he is one of the greatest. This is a great video and topic, skateboarders have lost integrity and the individuality. Nyjah doesn't need the validation of SOTY, everyone will be grateful for him once he's no longer in the spotlight.

He’s obviously the best skater out there. After he’s past his prime and other skaters start literally dying while hitting some of these spots will most of the haters realize how big of a deal his parts were. In terms of tricks and consistency nobody can touch Nyjah. And he doesn’t need Thrasher’s approval for this.
Never understood the “you have to dress a certain way to skate” or “you have to dress a certain way to listen to a type of music.” Posers are worried about that shit. People that really skate are going to be worried about the skating.
On a side note, how tf did the equivalent a really fast front side air on a 4 foot mini ramp after he even passed the bench he was supposed to Ollie before end up getting trick of the year? Yeah sure the other side of the banks is death if you fall- cool- it was a front side Ollie.

Also, maybe because countless pros have been there for over 35 years and not a single one even tried to do it. Maybe because transition is almost nonexistent and just doing a fs wallride over the big bench was enough to get a Transworld cover.

It’s so spot on too. Literally one day after Tyshawn dropped the kickflip over the subway some guy bunny hopped it on one of those heavy rental bikes you can get in NYC…and he did it first try. He barely had any speed at all too. The gapped looks small to me but I thought it may have been the garbage angle they used. But no, that gap is tiny for a pro like Nyjah. He could rip like 10 different flip tricks across it and say it was too small to put in his part lol
I remember when everyone hated Nyjah's style...or lack of style. I always thought he had a very obvious style. His style is landing shit. Like every master of technique and skill, in every form of art, there is a direct coralation to the life altering dedication of time and energy needed every single day to focus on your craft and the level of progression/skill acquired. Look at Nyjah's socials....it all there. It's why he's the best.

decent argumentn but i would wager 20-30 transition guys can do it today. Who bothers with an ollie when the spot has generally been there for manuals and wallrides. $10 says it gets kickflipped in the next 5 years and no one bats an eye.. no awards, no slomo, no nothing.

You're right about skateboarding. The culture is woke. Everyone is scared to be cancelled. All about fake "Good Vibes". Most are fiends for approval that tiptoe around hurting someone's feelings. It's a sad story.
I don't have to like Nyjah. This is skateboarding it's supposed to be opinionated and subjective. Nobody hates Nyjah because he wears shorts, they hate on him because of who and how he is. You always look for someone you can relate or want to be like. People wanna be like Tiago, Tyshawn, Jamie Foy, Louie Lopez, etc because they seem cool and relatable. The same reason people hated on Greg Lutzka back in the day, or Jeremy Rodgers, or even Andy Anderson and Richie Jackson. People hated on Sheckler when he was the best for the very same reason. I think it's just the pendulum swinging the other way where the dudes who don't represent the raw, grimy side of things are supposed to get the most shine.
I've historically hated on Nyjah because of his constant contest domination. Just rooting for literally anyone else to land their tricks lol. His street skating has always been next level though. Complete savage on the board. And I love switch heel front tails so 🤷🏻♂️
I tell people I used to skate and they ask questions and I have to always tell em watch this shit and I always tell em this guy is the best there is no debate other people try to say others are better but at the end of the day if we being real Nyjah is just levels above when u compare video to video
The big difference between Nyjah's ender with a man made kicker compared to other man made obstacles and fake spots, like what Steve Berra did for example... tons of pros could do amazing tricks on fake ledges, benches, or rails for a skate part. Previously fake spots were built to make it easier for a skateboarder to land a trick. Nobody is hitting that rail except Nyjah. The kicker only made it slightly possible to grind that rail. Other fake spots in videos exist because of laziness. The skater didn't want to take the time and energy to find a legit spot. There's nothing lazy about Nyjah crushing an almost impossible rail.....kicker or no kicker.
I still think Louie Lopez should have been soty. I'll admit that nyjah is way gnarlier but Louie is more creative, has better style, and is far more interesting to watch
I remember how little he was with rastas doing crazy tricks and now has more style and lots of tatoos. I agree with you that after all those insane tricks, the banger was special made? It was crazy but there was no need to put a fake ramp. Its like you already have 100 in a test, you have a bonus question and you look at what answer the guy next to you has
I'd rather watch Erick Winkowski skate, because it's not going to be all handrails, and he's got a much more unique style, all the while riding 80's shapes. Style and ability to skate different stuff makes a good skater to me. Not just tricks. I also like Mark Gonzales.
Yeah Jah definitely got robbed, even at the end it was between Tfunk or Tyshawn (which in my opinion should have taken Tfunk as Tyshawn got 2018)... The only excuse would be Nyjah getting 'Skater of the decade' award
The thing about nyjah is that he’s not relatable so he doesn’t inspire the average skater to go skate. His clothing is counter “skater” culture which turns the average skater away from him and his tricks are so clean to the point where people can’t relate to that because the average skater struggles with easy tricks. There’s no denying nyjahs skills but it’s the fact that people can’t relate to him so he’s not inspiring to the average skater.
I can’t hold you. Being “creative” in skateboarding has pretty recently gone mainstream. I recall soty was based on melting faces & a heavy connection to NHS.
Everyone knows Nyjah was robbed. He is doing nbds at spots everyone else wishes they could do even basic tricks. He proved he is better than everyone else.

The euphemism about skaters not being free thinkers is how all sheeple are across the board. Most people are afraid to have to think for themselves. Even fewer people will defend their own perspective. Also, Nyjah is an athlete. He doesn't have to limit himself to skateboarding. He could have played football or been a professional fighter. That's why everyone hates on him. He's not a flabby strung out loser who looks to others to validate his life.

Nyah is the best skateboarder right now, maybe this far in history. No one comes close to his technical skill, consistency, innovativeness, and gnarliness. He’s the full package and THAT is why he gets so much hate. I don’t know anything about him as a person. I don’t need to in order to see that he is the best skater right now.

The fact that Nyjah and his crew had to build this spot with all that concrete ,rebar and aggregate Just ruined it for me. I"m beyond disappointed that Nyjah had to venture with a municipal Contractor to build a Gnarly "street spot" that looks like a non skater built it. at least our tax dollars went to one of the greatest NBD,s Ever.

The main issue with Nyjah not getting SOTY is beacuse most of the clips he presented in this year's videos are almost 3 years old. He's been injured through over the half of the year due to his torn Acl. SOTY is about who's been skating the best in the year and not about how much footage's been released. Thyshawn did switch ollie over the picnic, kickfliped and bs fliped the subway which is a gigantic gap and Also had the trash can part in Play dead. Nyhah uploaded some of his best clips from few years back while skating mostly in SLS and expected to be picked skater of the year.
You raise a good point but thats not true. Skaters have been stacking their clips and going for the title for years now. Marc Sucui's footage had been stacked over a few years when he dropped his parts. No hate on Tyshawn, his part was great to watch but Nyjah literally raised the bar in skateboarding and did tricks that will have a massive impact on pushing the new generations of skaters. Subway gaps have been done before and no one really cared much for them. Someone did an impossible over a Subway gap last year and everyone forgot about that, Chris Cole Fs Flipped one over 15 years ago and no one talks about it. While very impressive that Subway BS Flip was overhyped.
SOTYs have been awarded for 3+ year stacked parts for at least a decade now. Hell pros would be lucky to get one part out every two years back in the early 2000s. Serious pro parts take well over a year to complete, especially when your part is nearly 15 mins of bangers
I feel like he comes off as arrogant that’s what I feel his problem. He’s skating is amazing, no where near I feel Gustavo ribeiro and them are to me though. But skating is soo vast and different and everyone is at such high level that it is all subjective it seems.
